Williams Earns High Praise

Trent Williams earns high praise: Last Friday, [offensive coordinator] Kevin Wilson heaped high praise on starting left tackle Trent Williams. "The best lineman that I've had since I've been here -- and I did have two former players (Jammal Brown and Davin Joseph) who played in the Pro Bowl last year that were first-round picks -- is No. 71," Wilson said of Williams. "It's not close." Williams admitted earlier this week that he'd heard what his offensive coordinator said of him. (The Oklahoman)

Williams Seeked Kelly's Advice

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Former Sooner advises Williams to stay in school: After the BCS National Championship, offensive tackle Trent Williams traveled home to Longview, Texas, unsure of his next move. It was former Sooner and current Washington Redskins wide receiver Malcolm Kelly -- Williams- high school teammate at Longview and college roommate at OU -- who helped convince Williams to stay, according to a source close to both Kelly and Williams. "Trent would change his mind every 10 minutes. He didn-t know what he was going to do," the source said. "But Malcolm encouraged him to come back. Trent really trusts Malcolm, and that made a huge difference." (More at The Oklahoman)

Box to Miss Spring Practice.. Again

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Box expected to miss spring practice: Oklahoma linebacker Austin Box is expected to miss spring practice due to elbow surgery, coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday. Box dislocated the elbow as a senior at Enid High School, and injured it again last year causing him to miss most of spring practice. Box, a rising sophomore, has battled several injuries since coming to Norman. (The Oklahoman)

Stoops reaction to Williams, Gresham, Bradford return: In addition to Sam Bradford's announcement that he plans to remain at Oklahoma, two other Sooners also announced that they plan to play for the Sooners next year. Both tight end Jermaine Gresham and Trent Williams said they will return for the 2009 season. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy announced earlier that he also will return. "We are pleased that these players are returning to our program," said OU head coach Bob Stoops. "They understand the value of gaining another year of experience and improving their position in the draft along with the value of either finishing their degree or being within a few hours of completing it. "I also think our players recognize the opportunities we have as a program to pursue more championships and that's something that means a lot to all of us." (SoonerSports.com)

Sooners' Williams to Return

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Williams to return in 2009: Offensive tackle Trent Williams said Wednesday he will return to Oklahoma for another season. "I just want to win," Williams said. "I have been left with a sour taste in my mouth. Not a lot of people win a championship and I want to win a championship. I also promised my mom I would graduate. And I think I can improve my draft stock." It will be interesting to see if Williams' return influences quarterback Sam Bradford's decision. Some members of the Oklahoma coaching staff feel Bradford is seriously considering returning to school. (ABC11.com)

OU vs. TCU: Post Game Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Johnson sets receiving record: On an offense loaded with playmakers, Johnson was the most lethal Saturday, finishing with five catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns. The 206 yards set a Sooner record for receiving yards in a game, eclipsing Mark Clayton's 190 yards against Baylor in 2003. "Manny Johnson had such a huge game," coach Bob Stoops said. "I told him I thought that was one of the best performances we've had by a wide receiver here in 10 years." (The Oklahoman)

Bradford's performance: Sam Bradford's career-best 411 passing yards is the third-most all-time by a Sooner quarterback. In addition, Bradford's 202 first-quarter passing yards set an OU record for passing yards in the opening quarter by a Sooner quarterback.

Williams injured: OU right tackle Trent Williams left the game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle, according to OU coach Bob Stoops. Williams was hurt when Bradford was sacked and his momentum carried him onto the side Williams' leg. Williams played in the second half. He limped off the field at the end of the game with his foot heavily taped. (Tulsa World)

(12/7) Trent Williams should play in Fiesta Bowl, Sooners Practice, and Oklahoma Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Williams likely to play in Fiesta Bowl: Freshman offensive tackle Trent Williams, taken from the field by cart at the Big 12 Championship, should be fine to practice and play in the Fiesta Bowl. Williams suffered a leg injury in the second half of the game, but he was later seen on the field and told reporters he was "OK." (NewsOK.com)

Sooners Back to practice: The Sooners returned to the practice field Wednesday, as the Sooners practiced lightly in preparation for Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Boise State to practice this weekend: From Boise FOX 12 on Boise State's practice plans.. "Coach (Chris) Petersen wanted the guys to hit the books and get caught up on school work the next couple of weeks here, and we'll just practice Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week and give them all next week off for finals," said [BSU assistant football coach Jeff ] Choate. In three weeks, the team will begin its journey to Phoenix. They leave just one day after Christmas then they have a week until the actual game.

Harley only Sooner in Orlando: [Kicker, Garrett] Hartley is the lone Sooner in Orlando. Still, Hartley is making the most of the trip, which began Sunday and doesn't end until a flight back to Norman on Friday. The trip has included dinners, a stay at a five-star hotel, and a visit to Universal Studios. The highlight for Hartley so far: "A round of golf at the PGA National Resort, the Champions Club," he said. "Pretty spectacular." (NewsOK.com)

(11/27) Boise State likely BCS Opponent, Peterson Big XII Status, and Oklahoma Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Stoops excited about meaningful game: OU coach Bob Stoops said Sunday he was excited to again be playing in a game with so much riding on the outcome. After being in the hunt for Big 12 and national championships every season from 2000-2004, the Sooners weren't in any of those discussions during an 8-4 campaign a year ago. It appeared they would be left out again this year, until Texas A&M upset Texas on Friday. "It was exciting to me Friday when that happened to again be in a game that meant so much," Stoops said. "It's exciting to be in it, where you have so much at stake." (NewsOK.com)

Williams earns praises: Freshman right tackle Trent Williams, who made his fifth straight start in place of injured Branndon Braxton, earned praise from Stoops. "He has played great the whole year. I mean, it's been really good," Stoops said. "It is very unusual, the strength and ability at that age to play like he has. . ." Two of Williams' best lead blocks came on touchdown drives. (Tulsa World)

Announcement on Peterson's Big XII status today? Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops likely will make an announcement on Peterson's condition sometime today, just as he did last week. When he addressed the media Sunday afternoon, Stoops said he had not yet spoken with the team doctors and did not know when they planned to perform a bone scan on Peterson's injured collarbone to determine whether he could play. (NewsOK.com)

Boise State likely opponent, if Sooners Win Saturday Night: Sooner fans might want to hold off on those reservations to Glendale. Oklahoma must first beat Nebraska this Saturday in the Big 12 championship before accepting the league's berth into the Bowl Championship Series and its "home" bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 1. Most projections have the Big 12 winner playing Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. But even if the Sooners did win the Big 12, there is a slim chance their destination might not be the desert. "(OU-Boise State) is what a lot of people are saying," said Big 12 associate commissioner Bob Burda, "but until they get on their conference calls and make their picks, we won't know. We've been surprised before." (Tulsa World)

(10/24) Smith Back to Practice, Williams Practicing Well and OU Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Williams replacing Braxton, practicing well:
The Sooners suffered their own loss on Saturday, with right offensive tackle Branndon Braxton going out with a broken bone in his lower leg. Braxton underwent surgery Sunday and is lost for the season. True freshman Trent Williams, who replaced Braxton Saturday night, will take over at right tackle. Impressive in practice, Williams had been getting some meaningful minutes. "We think Trent's pretty good," said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. "He's played very well. We have a lot of confidence in Trent's ability. That's why we've been playing him." (NewsOK.com)
