Williams Granted Waiver; Bedlam 2008 Ticket Info

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

John Williams granted NCAA hardship waiver: Update a previous post, Oklahoma defensive end John Williams has received a hardship waiver from the NCAA and has been granted a sixth season of athletics eligibility. The 6-5, 249-pound Williams started three games of the 2007 season, but suffered a torn left Achilles tendon in the fourth game at Tulsa and missed the remainder of the campaign. "We're excited to have John back for another season," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "We've felt for some time that John is an excellent player. He was off to a great start before the injury. I know he's looking forward to making a strong contribution for us next season." Williams, who has battled knee surgery and Achilles surgery, said he's looking forward to playing a full season. "The latter part of my career here is going to be my most successful," he said. "Everything is a process. This is what I'm living right now. I've got no choice but to move ahead." The NCAA's decision to grant him another year of eligibility was a stress reliever for Williams. "I'm very relieved, very thankful and grateful," he said. "I really want a chance to finish what I started." The Houston native is continuing rehabilitation efforts. (SoonerSports PR)

OSU Official: No single-game Bedlam tickets to be sold: In order to witness the 2008 Bedlam football game -- Oklahoma at Oklahoma State on Nov. 29 -- Cowboy fans must purchase a $419 season ticket. No single-game Bedlam tickets will be made available. "Our decision to eliminate single-game tickets for Bedlam is based upon our desire to grow our season-ticket sales," OSU athletic director Mike Holder explained. "I just hope our fan base responds to this as a call to buy more season tickets." On a per-game average, the price of an OSU season ticket basically remains the same. (Tulsa World)

West Va. Returns 7,500 Fiesta Bowl Tickets

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

West Virginia returns 7,500 tickets: West Virginia University has returned 7,500 tickets to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the likely fallout from a fan base that already had made reservations in New Orleans for the BCS national championship game. Fiesta Bowl President John Junker called it a "Christmas miracle" that West Virginia accounted for 10,000 tickets, considering recent developments within the football program. Just more than two weeks after losing its final regular-season contest to Pittsburgh - a loss that likely kept the Mountaineers out of the title game - West Virginia lost popular coach Rich Rodriguez, who resigned and became coach at Michigan. (Arizona Republic)

Coach Wilson excited about defensive line future: OU's defense suffered late in the season without English, who missed the final three games of the regular season with an ankle fracture. But in some ways, English's injury benefited freshman defensive end Jeremy Beal, who was thrown into the starting lineup in place of English. "We've been calling that a blessing in disguise,” defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said. "That forced us to give Jeremy more opportunities. And he's really grown the latter part of the season.” (NewsOK.com)

Oklahoma Injury Report; Limited OU-Texas Tech Tickets Available

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Coleman out due to injury; Reed out due to personal matters: Senior defensive tackle Steven Coleman likely won't play this week at Iowa State because of a strained abdominal muscle, said defensive coordinator Brent Venables. He said linebacker Ryan Reynolds will play despite injuries to his neck, arm, shoulder and both knees. Venables also said backup linebacker Mike Reed, who didn't suit up for the Missouri game, will miss the Iowa State trip while tending to personal matters. Reed's wife had surgery and he's been taking care of the couple's two small children. (Tulsa World)

Murray's ankle "feels better": Running back DeMarco Murray played sparingly against Missouri because of a slight sprain on the outside of his left ankle he suffered the week before against Texas. "It feels better now,” Murray said. "But it was hurting me last week.” (NewsOK.com)

R. Smith Named Big XII Defensive Player of the Week; Allen Patrick Remains Starter

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Allen Patrick fine after suffering cramps; remains starter: Running back Allen Patrick is fine and, despite DeMarco Murray's 128 yards and 65 yard score, won't lose his starting job, running backs coach Cale Gundy said. Patrick "just cramped. It was very humid down there. He's got the lowest body fat on the team, which is in the low 4s (4 percent), which is not normal, I don't think. So he doesn't have a whole lot to give up. He did against Miami. It was extremely hot and humid. Any time you have low body fat and it's extremely hot and humid, sometimes it can affect you." (Tulsa World)

Reggie Smith named Big XII Defensive Player of the Week: For the second time this season, Oklahoma cornerback Reggie Smith has been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He received the honor for his play in the Sooners' 28-21 win over Texas last Saturday. Smith, a junior from Edmond, Oklahoma's Santa Fe High School, was credited with six tackles, two pass deflections and one interception, which he returned 33 yards. Two of Smith's key plays came at critical times in the fourth quarter. His interception came on the heels of OU's final and decisive touchdown. Then on the next Texas drive he batted away a long pass intended for UT's Limas Sweed while in single coverage. That play occurred inside the Sooner 10-yard line. Smith's play helped preserve the victory, which was Bob Stoops' sixth in nine meetings with Texas. (SoonerSports.com)

Ryan Broyles receives deferred sentence and $100 fine: Update: Ryan Broyles arrested... Although they tried, Norman police investigators said Monday they never learned how a suspended University of Oklahoma football player got a key and an override code to a gas pump at a city convenience store. Ryan Broyles, 19, pleaded no contest in Cleveland County District Court Friday to a misdemeanor count of attempted petty larceny, effectively ending their investigation, Capt. Leonard Judy said. In an unscheduled court appearance, Broyles entered the plea before Special District Judge Reg Gaston. Gaston placed Broyles on a six-month deferred sentence and fined him $100. "Without anything further to go on, we essentially came to a dead end,” Judy said, implying that Broyles never told investigators how a key and code came into his possession. (NewsOK.com)

NCAA Removes OU Secondary Violation; McCoy Break Hand

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Updated:
OU wants secondary violation dropped: As previously posted; After consulting with a fellow Big 12 Conference school, Oklahoma wants the NCAA to strike a self-reported secondary rules violation from its record. Oklahoma reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. The university's executive director of compliance, Jason Leonard, subsequently sent a letter to the NCAA asking to have that violation removed, according to documents obtained Friday through an open records request by The Associated Press. Leonard wrote that Oklahoma heard from compliance staff at Missouri after they'd read an AP story published June 12 detailing secondary violations that had been self-reported by Oklahoma. Leonard wrote that he was informed that Missouri – in a similar situation – had been told by a former NCAA official in 2005 that no secondary violation had occurred in that instance. (AP/Dallas Morning News) (8-11-07)
Update 2: University of Oklahoma secondary violations removed: The Oklahoma football program had a self-reported secondary NCAA violation removed from its record, according to documents obtained Tuesday by The Oklahoman. Oklahoma originally reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. In a letter dated July 18, NCAA Associate Director for Enforcement of Secondary Violations, Renee Gomila, wrote that "based upon additional information (OU) submitted, it was confirmed by membership services that under the specific facts of this case, no violation of NCAA legislation occurred inasmuch as personalized numbers and names were not placed on the jerseys displayed during the prospects' visits.” (NewsOK.com)

McCoy suffers broken hand; unlikely to start against Utah State: Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy broke a bone in his right hand on Saturday against Miami but was able to practice Monday with a cast protecting the injury. He said the injury occurred during the Sooners goal-line stand that ultimately ended with a Hurricanes touchdown. McCoy said having a cast over four fingers does hinder his effectiveness, but doesn't actually hurt. "I'm working to get better every day so it won't slow me down," he said. (Tulsa World)

Updated: OU's Patrick suffered cramps: Oklahoma RB Allen Patrick did not play after two carries in the third quarter, but did not reinjure his right ankle, instead suffering leg cramps. (Star-Telegram)(9-9-07)
Update 1: Patrick expected to play Saturday:
Coach Bob Stoops said senior running back Allen Patrick has worked at full speed this week in practice and is expected to play Saturday. (Dallas Morning News)

OU's Broyles arrested on suspicion of theft: Ryan Broyles, a freshman wide receiver on the University of Oklahoma football team, was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of trying to steal gasoline from a Norman convenience store. The 19-year-old Norman High graduate was arrested on suspicion of attempted larceny and taken to Cleveland County jail. He was released on a $200 bond. Norman Police Capt. Leonard Judy said an officer around 12:10 a.m. spotted a sport utility vehicle parked at the gas pumps of the Mr. Shortstop store at Alameda Street and 12th Avenue SE. The store was closed, but the officer saw a man standing between the vehicle and a gas pump. The investigating officer reported the man having a key to the pump along with overriding codes to activate the pump. The key unlocked a pump door that leads to a keypad on which to type the code. (NewsOK.com) Update: Stoops: Broyles Suspended Indefinite Period of Time

OU Tickets Commemorating Oklahoma's Centennial: With the 2007 football season opener just weeks away, anticipation is mounting for fans awaiting the arrival of their season tickets. Tickets are scheduled to be mailed out at the end of this week. Featuring the official logo adopted by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission commemorating the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma's statehood, the 2007 Sooner football tickets link the impact each institution has had on the other. As stated on the tickets, while the Sooners actually pre-date Oklahoma's admittance to the Union by 13 years, the two have reveled in each other's success and pulled from each other's strength for so long that they are now nearly one in the same. For many, you can't say 'Oklahoma' without saying 'Sooners'. The 2007 tickets feature a selection of record-setting team and individual performances from Oklahoma's football tradition. "I do regret it a little." Grady was nearly 900 miles away when the Bomar story broke, but that kind of news travels fast. "I was getting a lot of calls from people saying I should come back. But I like it here," the fourth-year junior said. (More at the Tulsa World)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Boise State sells remaining Fiesta Bowl tickets slowly: Ty Palmer got to Bronco Stadium at 6 p.m. Wednesday and spent the night dozing at the front of the line to get tickets to the Fiesta Bowl.John Hardy -- the last person in line -- strolled into the Varsity Center on the Boise State campus Thursday morning and had his ticket 20 minutes later. The line Palmer began more than 15 hours earlier was gone half an hour after the ticket office opened Thursday at 9 a.m. Rain and expectations of long lines were blamed for keeping more fans from queuing up to buy what were said to have been BSU's last 200 tickets for the Jan. 1 game against Oklahoma. However, approximately 200 additional tickets not claimed by season ticket holders also were released Thursday morning and were still available Thursday afternoon.
