Eldridge To Miss Texas A&M Game

OU's Brody Eldridge to miss Saturday's Texas A&M game: An Oklahoma offensive line already hounded by penalties and shoddy blocking will be without its most consistent member Saturday night against Texas A&M. Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Monday that starting left guard Brody Eldridge will miss the 6 p.m. matchup with the Aggies due to a shoulder injury sustained during last Saturday's 10-3 loss at Nebraska. Eldridge, according to both Stoops and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, has been OU's highest-grading lineman since moving to guard from tight end before the Oct. 17 game against Texas. (Tulsa World) NOTE: Stoops did not give an update on defensive end Auston English's status concerning Saturday's game.

OU vs. Texas A&M: Post Game Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Davis suffers sprained knee? Alan Davis, one of three healthy defensive ends in Oklahoma's rotation, suffered what coach Bob Stoops termed a sprained knee Saturday, similar to the one that will keep end Auston English out through the Nov. 22 Texas Tech game. That would leave Jeremy Beal, Frank Alexander and seldom-used Pryce Macon at defensive end against Tech, unless the Sooners consider pulling the redshirt off freshman R.J. Washington. "I don't know, you hate to do that," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "We'll evaluate everything." (Tulsa World)

Congrats to Brent and his wife Julie Venables on a third child.

(11/3) OU Football Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Stoop, Sooners not looking past Texas A&M: While there was clearly some Sooner celebrating going on over Texas Tech's upset of Texas on Saturday night, Bob Stoops said the focus going forward won't be on OU's revived chances in the Big 12 South and nationally. It'll be on Texas A&M. "That's what it is," Stoops said. "We've got Texas A&M. We've got to hopefully continue to make improvement and be at our best when we go down there and play." (The Oklahoman)

OU Injury update:Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said wide receiver Manny Johnson did not re-injure his right elbow against Nebraska. The senior played early, but was on the sideline for the last three quarters. "Manny is fine, he just didn't quite feel comfortable enough once he was out there," Stoops said. "He hasn't set himself back any." It was the same case for tight end Brody Eldridge. He played in the first quarter, but was in street clothes and wearing a medical boot on his right foot by the end of the game. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Eldridge's removal was precautionary. The Sooners were up 35-0 by the end of the first quarter. "Brody got kicked by one of our own guys and kind of aggravated his ankle," he said. "I thought, well we're doing good so If I don't need him I'm going to hold him." (Norman Transcript) No word on Auston English's status.

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU-Nebraska Game of the Century reunion set: They won't be suiting up, but more than 50 Oklahoma and Nebraska players who participated in the 1971 Game of the Century will be honored during Saturday's game. Among those who plan to attend the ceremonies: Tom Brahaney, Leon Crosswhite, Chuck Fairbanks, Greg Pruitt, Joe Wylie from OU and John Dutton, Larry Jacobson, Jeff Kinney, Tom Osborne and Johnny Rodgers from Nebraska. (The Oklahoman)

Johnson limited in practice: Receiver Manny Johnson participated in practice Monday on a limited basis, and coach Bob Stoops said his status for Saturday's game with Nebraska would be determined as the week progressed. (Star-Telegram)

Granger finally speaks: Monday night after practice, Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger met the media for the first time since being sent home from the Fiesta Bowl for trying to steal a coat. He was reluctant to talk much about that incident. "It was a mistake. I apologized," he said. "I'm just happy to be back playing at the university." Was Granger worried that might not happen? "I'm just happy that it didn't," he replied. (Tulsa World)

OU-Texas A&M kickoff TBD: The kickoff time for Oklahoma's Nov. 8 game at Texas A&M won't be set until Sunday following this week's Big 12 Conference games. ABC has invoked its six-day window for announcing its Nov. 8 Big 12 options. The OU-A&M game will be shown on either FSN at 11 a.m., or on ABC at 2:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. (Tulsa World)

Franchione Talks Smack

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Aggies' Franchione can't resist his OU jokes: The Houston Chronicle reported that [Dennis] Franchione, while speaking to the Hous ton Touchdown Club and breaking down the Big 12's South Division race, couldn't resist jabbing the Sooners when he talked about their uncertainty at quarterback. "That may be the only question they have . . . other than what jobs they are going to work this year," Franchione said. "That is a joke; I couldn't resist." Franchione's "joke" was in reference to Stoops kicking two players off the team last summer when he learned they had accepted money for work not completed at a Norman car dealership. He [Bob Stoops] acknowledged that at this time last August, he felt like someone had slugged him in the gut when he learned Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn had lied about their employment at the car dealership. "A year ago, I didn't have a hand in it," Stoops said of NCAA rules that were broken. "But it tugs at you . . . that it reflects on you in such a negative way when it wasn't you. That part is hard. "But now I feel like a million bucks." (Tulsa World)

(4/25) OU-Texas A&M at Cotton Bowl Was Discussed; OU Football Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU-Texas A&M at the Cotton Bowl brief conversation in 2006: A source close to the Oklahoma football program confirmed Tuesday that OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione and A&M AD Bill Byrne had the briefest of conversations more than a year ago about the possibility of playing in Dallas if the Longhorn-Sooner games were returned to a home-and-home series as it was before 1929. "That goes back a ways," the OU official said of the brief dialogue. "To say that the two schools had that conversation recently would be false. It was a very, very short conversation in which the pros and cons were talked about at a meeting. Sort of a what-if." (

(11/5) Sooners Edge Aggies, Oklahoma-Tech 6:00 PM FSN Kickoff and Oklahoma Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooners Edge Aggies 17-16:
Facing fourth-and-inches from his own 29 with 1:29 left, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops wanted to punt to protect a one-point lead against Texas A&M. "The second I said punt it, I looked at all the offensive guys in their eyes, then I thought 'I can't punt it,"' Stoops said. The gamble paid off for the 18th-ranked Sooners, who got the first down they needed to wrap up a 17-16 victory over the 21st-ranked Aggies on Saturday night.Paul Thompson's second effort on a sneak gave Oklahoma (7-2, 4-1 Big 12) the first down, but the play ended up being moot. Texas A&M (8-2, 4-2) - home of the 12th man - was called for having 12 men on the field, giving the Sooners a first down and the ability to run out the clock."That's what we wanted," Thompson said of the call. "We didn't want to give the ball back and allow them to score."The Sooners won their fourth straight in Stoops' 100th game at Oklahoma while breaking a four-game winning streak by the Aggies. (AP/FOXSports.com)

Oklahoma-Texas Tech game 6:00 PM FSN: Fox Sports announced that it will televise Oklahoma's final home game of the 2006 season on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Sooners host Texas Tech at 6 p.m. at Owen Field. The OU-Texas Tech game extends the streak of Sooner games on TV to 53. FSN is Cox channel 37 in the Oklahoma City market and channel 27 in the Tulsa market. (SoonerSports PR)

Stoops on 4th down, fourth quarter call: Oklahoma's Bob Stoops on fourth down, and inches with 89 seconds remaining: "In the end, I just felt, 'Hey, you know what, we've got to be able to make an inch,' " Stoops reasoned in postgame. "Bottom line, they had the wind. I'm not gonna give them a chance (with the ball back). I just felt we were gonna make it." (Tulsa World)

AP 46th rusher to rack up 100 rushing yards in quarter: [Allen] Patrick's 101 yards in the first quarter marked the 46th time in OU history a player has rushed for 100 or more yards in a quarter. His 101 yards in the first quarter ranks 39th on that list. The record for most yards in a quarter is held by Adrian Peterson who rushed for 161 yards against Oklahoma State in the third quarter of the 2004 game. (Oklahoma Notes)

Adrian Out of Sling: Adrian Peterson (broken collarbone) is no longer wearing a sling. There has been no official update on when he might return, but he might be able to play in OU's Nov. 25 finale at Oklahoma State. (Star-Telegram)

Nic Harris taunting penalty: OU defensive back Nic Harris was flagged for taunting after tackling Texas A&M's Martellus Bennett in the first quarter. Harris stood over Bennett and made a ripping gesture with his arms. Coach Bob Stoops was quick to get in the face of Harris when he came to the sideline after the play. (NewsOK.com)

OU Rushing attack: OU recorded its second-highest rushing total of the season with 224 yards. Last week, the Sooners rushed for a season-best 231 yards. (Oklahoma Notes)

Walker Early Injury: [Brandon] Walker injured his shoulder on the game's first play from scrimmage, and gave way to Brian Simmons over the next four plays. Then Walker returned, as he did after injuring his shoulder last week, and went right back to banging. The majority of Patrick's first-half carries were over OU's left side. But Walker pulled from the right to throw lead blocks on several plays, including Patrick's 1-yard touchdown plunge for the game's first points. (Tulsa World)

(11/4) Oklahoma-Texas A&M Top 25 Match-Up Notes, Articles and Columns

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Top 25 match-up:
Saturday's game will be the first between AP Top 25 teams at Kyle Field since the Oklahoma-Texas A&M match-up in 2004. Oklahoma, then No. 2, beat No. 22 A&M 42-35 after being down by 14 points on three occasions.

A Sooners' Commitment breaks National Record: Heritage Hall senior Jimmy Stevens set the national high school record for career field goals on Friday night.
Stevens kicked a 26-yarder in the second quarter during the Chargers' district game against Bethel in Oklahoma City. The field goal was the 49th of Stevens' career. He passed previous record holders Brian Bond of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Tomas Sanchez of Arlington Heights, Texas. The game was stopped after the record-setting kick as school officials honored Stevens, who has orally committed to the University of Oklahoma. (NewsOK.com)

Franchione excited about spotlight: To hear Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione, the Sooners will have a lot to contend with tonight. "I'll bet that I will not have seen Kyle Field like we're going to see it Saturday night since I've been here," Franchione said last week, "and I've seen it pretty good sometimes. I have a feeling Saturday night's going to be special." Might any of that have to do with ESPN's College GameDay presence in College Station? "It's neat to be at the center of the college football universe for a day," Franchione said. "But you know, these are frills. They're just extra benefits. We've got to stay focused on what we have to do to get this team ready to play." (Tulsa World)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Patrick's confidence building: Rush job Sooners running back Allen Patrick said his comfort level improved along with his production from his first start against Colorado to last week's game at Missouri. "My first week, I was just coming out trying to get some yards, running downhill," Patrick said. "The second game, I tried to slow it down a little bit, read the hole, but I'm still trying to run downhill at the same time. That's my style, running downhill." (NewsOK.com)

(11/1) NCAA Bomar Investigation, Stoops 100th Game, A&M-OU Tickets Available and Oklahoma Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

A&M-Oklahoma tickets still available:
As of late Tuesday, about 1,500 tickets remained for Saturday's game. The $83 tickets can be bought online at AggieAthletics.com or 12thmanfoundation.com or by calling (888) 992-4443.

NCAA Bomar Investigation "ongoing": The NCAA's investigation into rules violations by former Oklahoma football players Rhett Bomar and J.D. Quinn is "ongoing," according to OU athletic director Joe Castiglione. In the notice of inquiry, dated Sept. 20, NCAA director of enforcement Julie Roe said the investigative portion of the process could be completed by today. "That date is just a target," Castiglione said. "It would be great if (the enforcement staff) would hit it, but I don't know if it's possible, or probable."(More at NewsOK.com)

Coach Stoops 100th Game, Maybe another 100? Bob Stoops will coach his 100th game at Oklahoma on Saturday. In his eighth season, Stoops, 46, is 81-18 and said Tuesday he could see himself coaching another 100 games at OU. Yet there is speculation that Stoops will leave campus life for the NFL, possibly for the Cowboys if Bill Parcells retires. "I've never tried to speculate on his behalf," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "I do know that he is happy, and that he is very, very focused on how this program can get better, better and better. Likewise, we're trying to match his passion and continue our improvement." (Dallas Morning News)

Davis Imitating Lane in practice: OU will use sophomore fullback Alan Davis in practice to emulate Jovorskie Lane, Texas A&M’s 6-4, 274-pound running back, OU head coach Bob Stoops said after practice Monday. Lane has 554 rushing yards on 124 attempts and is tied for second place nationally with 17 touchdowns. The 6-2, 253-pound Davis played last season as a defensive lineman but was converted to fullback this year. (The Oklahoma Daily)

Stoops pleased with Dotson: OU defensive end Alonzo Dotson saw his most significant action of the season Saturday at Missouri and came up big for the Sooners, especially on the goal-line stand in the third quarter. "I should have given him a game ball immediately after the game, but sometimes you don't realize it until you watch tape," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "He makes the first three plays on the goal line. All three of them in a row are Alonzo." (NewsOK.com)

(10/29) Sooners Knock Off Tigers, Kelly Receiving Milestone, A&M-Sooners Kickoff and Oklahoma Columns

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooners get past Tigers:
A swarming Oklahoma defense made life difficult on Chase Daniel and No. 23 Missouri, leading to a road win for the Sooners. Paul Thompson threw two touchdown passes, Allen Patrick rushed for 162 yards and No. 19 Oklahoma scored all of its points off Missouri's mistakes in a 26-10 victory Saturday. ''Opportunistic, I guess,'' Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. ''I don't know that this should be a surprise because we've been playing this way for several weeks now.'' The Sooners (6-2, 3-1 Big 12) won for the first time this season away from Norman, Okla., and snapped Missouri's eight-game home winning streak. After a 6-0 start, the Tigers (7-2, 3-2) have lost two of three. (AP/SoonerSports.com)

Kelly fastest to 1,000 receiving yards: Passed the 1,000-yard benchmark in career receiving yards in his 19th career game, quicker than any other OU player in history (Antwone Savage, 21). Kelly entered the game with 995 career receiving yards and finished with 1,035. He sits 18th on OU's all-time list in the category, five yards behind Jarrail Jackson. It took Kelly 13 games to reach 500 receiving yards, but just six to double that figure. (Oklahoma Notes)

Oklahoma-Texas A&M set for 7:00 Kickoff:
ABC announced Saturday night that the Oklahoma at Texas A&M game scheduled for next Saturday, Nov. 4, will kickoff at 7 p.m. The network said last week that it would choose between a morning and evening starting time. It eventually settled on the latter. This will mark the second straight week that OU has appeared on ABC. The Sooners will take a three-game winning streak to College Station, Texas. The most recent of those victories came Saturday at Missouri when OU prevailed over the No. 23 Tigers, 26-10. It was MU's first loss at home this season. (SoonerSports PR)

Peterson visits MO. youth team: Injured running back Adrian Peterson visited with a youth football team from St. Charles, Mo., before the game, and the 10- and 11-year-olds were starstruck. As the Sooners stretched, Peterson and running backs coach Cale Gundy walked to the north end zone to greet the Mid River Eagles, who are coached by former Missouri player Derrick Miller. Peterson shook hands and told the kids to stay focused and mind their studies. Gundy extolled Peterson to the Eagles as the Sooners' hardest worker. When he walked away, the Eagles' quarterback smiled and shouted, "Remember the Eagles!" "That was really cool of him to come down here and do that," said Miller. (Tulsa World)

Stoops pleased despite fumble: Coach Bob Stoops had high praise for his offense on a drive that resulted in no points. After Lendy Holmes smothered a pass on fourth-and-goal, OU took over at the 1 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. The Sooners drove 68 yards in 10 plays and ate 4:43 off the clock. The drive ended when Thompson fumbled at the OU 42. "I was pumping them up on the sideline," Stoops said. "That's a heck of a drive and a big part of the game." (Dallas Morning News)

This one is for him: A memorable moment for the Sooners came with 5:02 left in the third quarter Saturday, when Quentin Chaney caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. "I ran the route, saw the ball coming, caught it and just made sure I stayed low," said Chaney, the sophomore from Booker T. Washington. "I felt a man on my back and pushed and got in that end zone." After the catch, Chaney found Malcolm Kelly, the receiver he replaced on the play. "The touchdown, I dedicated it to Malcolm," Chaney said. "His grandfather passed away earlier this week. Where's the Mizzou fans? Saturday's paid attendance was announced at 62,045. Despite the hype produced the weekend's only game between two teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25, the crowd still fell short of Faurot Field's 68,349 capacity. Nearly 1,600 more fans showed up last week when Missouri hosted Kansas State in the rain. (NewsOK.com)

(10/23) Smith Expected Back, Oklahoma Hits the Road and OU Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

R. Smith expected back to practice:
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops indicated Sunday that strong safety Reggie Smith is expected to return to practice this week in anticipation of the Sooners' game at Missouri this weekend. Smith was limited in practice last week due to a sore leg and knee, prompting OU to start Nic Harris at strong safety Saturday against Colorado. Smith played deep safety in the Sooners' five- and six-defensive back packages and was not credited with any tackles. He did collide with Colorado quarterback Bernard Jackson in the fourth quarter, and limped off the field as a result. (Tulsa World)

No worries going on the road: Coach Bob Stoops said he's not worried about playing four of the next five games on the road. (Dallas Morning News)

Oklahoma-Texas A&M to be televised: ABC has notified Big 12 Conference officials that it will televise the Oklahoma at Texas A&M football game on Nov. 4. What the network has not yet decided is what time the game will start. That decision will come Sunday when ABC will choose between 11 a.m., and 7 p.m. The network has selected two Big 12 games for the Nov. 4 date. The other is Missouri at Nebraska. Both games are certain to be televised. Only the starting times remain in question. This week, Oklahoma plays at Missouri. That game, also on ABC, will kickoff at 11 a.m. Brent Musburger, Bob Davie and Lisa Salters will have the call on the 51st consecutive OU game to be on television. (SoonerSports Release)

First-teams back to facing each other: Sooners' first-team offense now matches up with their first-team D. Brent Venables says he doesn't recall exactly when he did it. But he knows without a doubt what happened when he did. At some point during the past month or so, Venables, coordinator of the Oklahoma defense, along with his defensive staff and head coach Bob Stoops, decided that some things needed fixing. The best way to begin repairs was to have the first-string defense increase its practice repetitions against the Sooners' first-string offense. It's called good-on-good. Every team does it some. OU always has. But this season, they needed to do it more. "There's no question it's made us better in the basics of the game," Venables said Sunday, a day after his defense tied up and dragged Colorado up and down Owen Field in a 24-3 triumph.
