Commitments to Play in All-Star Games

Three Oklahoma commitments to play in all-star games: OU fans will get a glimpse of the future, as oral commitments Blake Bell, Tony Jefferson and Justin McCay will participate in all-star games in the coming weeks. Bell will quarterback the White in the Under Armour All-American Game, which will be played Jan. 2 at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, Fla., and televised by ESPN. Jefferson, a safety, who made his commitment to OU over the weekend, will star for the West in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be held Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, and shown on NBC. McCay, a linebacker out of Shawnee, Kan., will also play for the West. (The Oklahoman)

OU, Big 12 Deny Report OU-Texas Will Be Primetime

Report of OU-Texas will be primetime is false, says Oklahoma: Heads turned this morning when a Dallas Morning News article labeled next year’s Oklahoma-Texas football game "an evening game." After years of afternoon kickoffs, could the Red River Rivalry be moving under the Cotton Bowl lights? Uh, no. OU released a statement declaring the report "false," and announced "no start time for that game has been determined, and it is unlikely that the determination will be made until this summer." (Tulsa World) MORE: Big 12 denies report too: Tim Allen, deputy commissioner of the Big 12 conference, confirmed that no time has been set for the game. "The game time for next year will not be established until at least June 1, 2010, when our television partners begin to make their selections," Allen said. "It is about 99 percent likely to remain at 11 a.m., with a possible move as late as 2:30 p.m. I am not sure where you got your information, but I do not see a scenario where the game is at night." Later on Wednesday, he added: "There has not been any discussion by those that do the scheduling – the Conference and the television networks – about playing next year's game at night." OU vs. K-State set for 11:30 a.m. Kickoff

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Mangino's celebrity status in Oklahoma: The funny thing about Mark Mangino in Oklahoma is that he is a minor celebrity there, which is noteworthy for a guy who doesn't exactly seek out the limelight. "I happened to be there at a time they won a national championship, and when you do that, they don't forget very quickly," Mangino said. "They know all nine assistant coaches that were on that staff and they got their name memorized and what they look like and where they hang out." (Topeka Capital-Journal)

The network has set the kickoff time for 2:30 p.m. Oklahoma is ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press poll released today, while the Jayhawks, who own Big wins over Iowa State and Colorado, are No. 16. (SoonerSports.com)

OU-Texas 2nd highest rated CFB game of '08: From Sports Media Watch...The Longhorns' 45-35 victory over the Sooners drew a 6.3 overnight rating on ABC Saturday, marking the second best overnight of the season, behind only an 8.4 for Ohio State/USC in September. The 6.3 overnight is the best for a Noon regular season college football game since Ohio State/Michigan drew a 6.4 in 2007.

Box to replace Reynolds? Bob Stoops indicated Sunday that having Box play the middle is "probably what we'll do, but we're going to work through that." Officials unveil Cotton Bowl renovations

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Dallas officials unveil Cotton Bowl renovations: Today, city officials are set to reveal the biggest transformation in the Cotton Bowl's 78-year history, a $57 million upgrade that added more than 16,000 seats to its end zones, finishing out the ends of its oval bowl with upper-level decks and bringing its total capacity to 92,200. It's a change Cotton Bowl backers hope will mean a brighter future for a facility that many have dismissed as having its best days behind it. "I don't think there is a bad seat in the stadium anymore," said Fair Park's general manager Daniel Huerta as he looked out over the field from the top of the north end-zone seats. OU Statement on Playing Tulsa Friday, Sept 21

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Official Oklahoma release on the scheduled Friday Tulsa game: I missed it the first time, Thanks, Jeff for the e-mail and link.. From OU Athletics Site.. Oklahoma's upcoming football game with Tulsa has been moved up one day from Sept. 22 to Friday, Sept. 21 to accommodate an ESPN2 request. OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione said that he agreed to the move only after consulting with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association. "Ultimately, this is Tulsa's home game and the contract with ESPN exists through Tulsa's affiliation with this game," Castiglione said. "A date change, which in this case came about at the suggestion of the rights holder, typically requires the approval of both institutions. We did not want to give that approval until we had the opportunity to speak with the secondary school activities association. "We wanted to assure them that we do support high school football and its traditional night of competition and that we have no plans to conflict with them on a regular basis. "We appreciate the willingness of the association to review this matter with us and to give us the approval to move forward. It allows us to showcase our program and since there are so many Oklahomans on our roster, we hope we can showcase the association and many of the young people it has produced as well." The Tulsa game is the fourth on the 2007 OU schedule. It will be played at Skelly Stadium on the TU campus. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. (

(2/6) Spring Red-White Game on ESPN, Pac-10 Official Fired, and Recruiting News

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

ESPN to televise Red-White game:
For the second straight year, ESPN will televise Oklahoma's Red/White Spring Game live. The game is set for 1 p.m., on Saturday, April 7. The cable network is yet to assign the announcers for the game. The visit marks the third overall for ESPN to the OU spring game. In 2003, the College GameDay crew of Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit included the Sooners during their spring tour for SportsCenter. Oklahoma is on a roll when it comes to football on television. The last 56 OU games have been televised. Over the history of the program 249 Sooner games have been televised, including 144 that were shown to national audiences. (SoonerSports PR)

Pac-10 Official Riese Fired: As the Pacific-10 Conference discusses improvements to its instant replay equipment for 2007, one decision already has been made: Gordon Riese will not be using it. Riese, the embattled instant replay official who was in the booth during the Oklahoma-Oregon game Sept. 16 in Eugene, got a call from the conference last week with official confirmation. "I was told I was not wanted in the replay booth," said Riese, who said he received death threats after the Ducks' 34-33 win after a botched ruling on an onside kickoff snatched a victory away from the Sooners. (The Oregonian)

Taylor commits to OU: [Londell] Taylor committed to Oklahoma on Monday, after receiving an offer from coach Bob Stoops. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound wideout picked OU over North Carolina, which began the recruiting push for Taylor six days ago. "Butch Davis and John Blake came through last week and picked up a tape," said Vian coach Brandon Tyler. "They watched him play basketball and talked to him. They wanted to fly Londell to Chapel Hill for a visit." Taylor visited North Carolina last Friday. He received an offer but didn't commit, opting to think it through. "Stoops called on Friday," said Tyler, who sent OU a highlight tape of Taylor early in January. "They'd seen his highlight film. He went to their camp this summer, so they knew who he was and what he was capable of." Tyler said Taylor's decision was a no-brainer. (NewsOK.com)

(10/23) Smith Expected Back, Oklahoma Hits the Road and OU Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

R. Smith expected back to practice:
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops indicated Sunday that strong safety Reggie Smith is expected to return to practice this week in anticipation of the Sooners' game at Missouri this weekend. Smith was limited in practice last week due to a sore leg and knee, prompting OU to start Nic Harris at strong safety Saturday against Colorado. Smith played deep safety in the Sooners' five- and six-defensive back packages and was not credited with any tackles. He did collide with Colorado quarterback Bernard Jackson in the fourth quarter, and limped off the field as a result. (Tulsa World)

No worries going on the road: Coach Bob Stoops said he's not worried about playing four of the next five games on the road. (Dallas Morning News)

Oklahoma-Texas A&M to be televised: ABC has notified Big 12 Conference officials that it will televise the Oklahoma at Texas A&M football game on Nov. 4. What the network has not yet decided is what time the game will start. That decision will come Sunday when ABC will choose between 11 a.m., and 7 p.m. The network has selected two Big 12 games for the Nov. 4 date. The other is Missouri at Nebraska. Both games are certain to be televised. Only the starting times remain in question. This week, Oklahoma plays at Missouri. That game, also on ABC, will kickoff at 11 a.m. Brent Musburger, Bob Davie and Lisa Salters will have the call on the 51st consecutive OU game to be on television. (SoonerSports Release)

First-teams back to facing each other: Sooners' first-team offense now matches up with their first-team D. Brent Venables says he doesn't recall exactly when he did it. But he knows without a doubt what happened when he did. At some point during the past month or so, Venables, coordinator of the Oklahoma defense, along with his defensive staff and head coach Bob Stoops, decided that some things needed fixing. The best way to begin repairs was to have the first-string defense increase its practice repetitions against the Sooners' first-string offense. It's called good-on-good. Every team does it some. OU always has. But this season, they needed to do it more. "There's no question it's made us better in the basics of the game," Venables said Sunday, a day after his defense tied up and dragged Colorado up and down Owen Field in a 24-3 triumph.
