Broyles receives no punishment after leaking practice details: Sophomore receiver Ryan Broyles wasn't assigned any extra conditioning as punishment for releasing details of quarterback Sam Bradford's return. After Bradford returned to practice last Monday, Broyles said he saw the Heisman Trophy winner throwing short passes, prompting coach Bob Stoops to say he was "disappointed" some of his players had so much to say about the return. "I can't say anything now, I learned my lesson," Broyles said. "But he didn't address anybody by name, he just said overall." ( The Oklahoman)

Florida Gator LB Spikes claims OU is a dirty team: Seven months after the national title game, LB Brandon Spikes is still thinking about Oklahoma. When asked about the dirtiest players on the team, Spikes segued straight to Florida's opponent in last season’s Bowl Championship Series national title game. "Compared to Oklahoma, you won't find anyone (as dirty)," Spikes said. With Florida's expectations as a national title favorite, the Gators and Sooners could meet in Pasadena for a second straight title game. "That's going to be fun if we play them," DE Carlos Dunlap said. ( Orlando Sentinel) Coker visits Sooners practice: Former Miami coach Larry Coker, now head coach at Texas-San Antonio, attended Monday’s practice. "I'm trying to learn some football from the best," said Coker, a native of Okemah who was the offensive coordinator at OU in the early 1990s. ( The Oklahoman) Way steps up at practice: Tress Way Oklahoma's competition at punter, if there ever was one, appears to be over. Tress Way, a redshirt freshman from Union, put on a kicking exhibition during an hour-long open session of practice at the OU rugby fields. Way has been competing with junior college transfer Cameron Kenney, who also plays wide receiver. Way's time spent working solely at punter and placekicker may have allowed him to pull away from Kenney. With a slight breeze at their backs and some 700 fans watching from just beyond the sideline, Way averaged 49 yards on his first seven punts, while Kenney averaged 43. Offensive line play helps OU offense in scrimmage: Oklahoma's football practice Wednesday (8/12) featured a scrimmage. By most accounts, the Sooners' high-powered offense outplayed the defense. "I can admit it," said defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. "They teach us to admit our faults, be a man about it, and they got us in the end. But that just helps us." McCoy said one of the big reasons for the offense's success was the play of the offensive line, specifically the play of Brian Simmons, who spends most of practice trying to block the All-American. ( The Oklahoman) Notable at OU's ccrimmage:Junior defensive end Pryce Macon did not practice. He was wearing a knee brace. Junior running back DeMarco Murray was a partial participant in Wednesday's workout. Stoops on opening practices to the public: OU coach Bob Stoops' decision this week to open up two practices caught some by surprise. But Stoops on Friday admitted a soft spot for the legions of Sooner fans who are just dying to watch their team. "We want them to watch to some degree," Stoops said. "But again, I just think there's so much more out there nowadays. I feel we're doing the right things, I just want to be able to let them enjoy it when you can here and there." ( Tulsa World) OU Injury News: A handful of Sooners continue to miss practice for various reasons, most due to injury. Safety Joseph Ibiloye (knee), cornerback Jamell Fleming (back), defensive end David King (concussion), safety Kevin Brent (shoulder) and running back Jonathan Miller (undisclosed) are among those currently out. Oklahoma schedules two open next week: Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops has announced that a portion of two preseason workouts will be open to the public. Workouts this Thursday, August 13, and next Monday, August 17, will be open. Each practice will be open for approximately the first hour and both are slated to begin at 6 p.m. The practices will be held at the rugby fields located west of the Lloyd Noble Center. Those in attendance should park in the LNC parking lot and enter the lot from Imhoff Road, which borders the LNC on the north. The viewing area will be on the south side of the practice fields. If weather conditions force a practice to be moved indoors, public access will be cancelled due to a lack of seating space in the Everest Training Facility. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesTCU denies spying on OU: UPDATE: Oklahoma closed its preseason scrimmages this season. Well-connected Tulsa World columnist Dave Sittler linked the move to the Horned Frogs' 17-10 upset of OU in 2005. He suggested OU coach Bob Stoops closed the scrimmages because he felt "information some friends of the TCU program picked up watching the scrimmages" in 2005 helped the Horned Frogs beat the Sooners. Patterson raised the subject following his team's win over Stanford on Sept. 13 and addressed it again in a phone interview Sunday. The Horned Frogs taped the publicly available TV broadcast of Oklahoma's spring game, Patterson said, looking for schemes and personnel. "As far as us watching their practices, I took a little bit of offense that they would think that I would have someone go and spy on their practices, because, absolutely, that did not happen," Patterson said. "But did we watch the spring tapes as far as the spring game? We did, and I watched all summer." (More at Dallas Morning News)(9/22/08)UPDATE: Bob Stoops acknowledged Tuesday that he closed preseason scrimmages this season not because he was concerned about spies feeding information to this week's opponent, TCU, but because the Sooners were trying out a new offense. "I think it's pretty obvious why we closed practices," Stoops said during his weekly press luncheon. "I think our no-huddle offense has been pretty obvious we didn't want to let on how much we were using it, all our terminology at the line of scrimmage -- even defensively, our terminology going against it, all of that is pretty obvious why we didn't want anyone being at our practices."(Tulsa World)Labels: Bob Stoops, Oklahoma Sooners, Practice, TCU

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesStoops on Granger injury: Coach Bob Stoop on DeMarcus Granger injury... "There's something in the tendon and the bone and they (OU physicians) are experimenting on whether to let it heal or take four weeks and see if DeMarcus can come back, or the other thing is to possibly do surgery and pin it," OU coach Bob Stoops said following Wednesday's practice. "DeMarcus and the doctors are uncertain. I know it's been reported that he's done for the year. That isn't the case yet. If he gets it pinned, he obviously will be. If he doesn't, he could be out four or five weeks. We'll just see." (Norman Transcript)OU's practice schedule: With an idle Saturday, the Sooners altered their practice schedule slightly this week. "Our Tuesday and Wednesday as we go through the week are usually pretty heavy," Stoops said. "They go against each other a lot on inside drill and team sessions. We try to keep each other sharp. Blitz periods, we come after each other. We'll do that Tuesday and Wednesday and probably part of Thursday." (Tulsa World)Moore to see more action: The Sooners plan to keep their four-man rotation at defensive tackle with or without Granger. Junior Cordero Moore will move up to Granger's spot. "I think he'll do a good job," defensive tackles coach Jackie Shipp said of Moore. "We'll keep working at it and we'll get him ready." Moore saw his first action of the season in the Washington game. For Williams, it was the first practice of the year. Offseason knee surgery kept him out of spring practice, and a surgically repaired stress fracture in his foot forced him to miss the beginning of training camp. "He was a little rusty out there," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "Gotta get to communicating, quit thinking. But it was good to see him back." Braxton's ankle injury was minor. Sooners to practice in full pads today: Hot and breezy conditions greeted the Sooner football team Sunday evening in Norman during the squad's fourth practice of the preseason. OU worked for two-and-one-half hours at the rugby fields west of Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners are slated to break out full pads for the first time in the preseason for Monday's practice. (SoonerSports)A. Peterson back at Vikings practice: Adrian Peterson didn't pile up any official stats, and there wasn't a log of his minutes of live action on the practice fields at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. But his mere participation Saturday was noteworthy for the Vikings. "It's nice to see him out there," Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. "Obviously, you could see his speed. He still has a long way to go as far as catching up mentally, but he's doing a nice job." Although the practice lasted just over an hour, Peterson teased Viking fans on a couple of plays. After missing Friday's practice against the Chiefs because of a hip pointer, Peterson was happy to just return to the fold. "I felt pretty good," he said. "Getting the reps, and just getting in the groove. Each rep counts. So it felt good to be out there and get some work in." Despite his minor injury, Childress said he liked Peterson competing and practicing Saturday. (Pioneer Press)Oklahoma shuffles DBs; Holmes to free safety: The surprise move for the start of preseason practice is the shift of Lendy Holmes from cornerback to free safety. Mike Stoops visit the Sooners: OU coach Bob Stoops got a visit from younger brother and former co-defensive coordinator Mike Stoops on Wednesday. Mike Stoops, now head coach at Arizona (100 miles due south in Tucson), got to reunite with his brother, several staff members and a dozen or so players. "It's fun. I love seeing him," said Bob Stoops, who added that another brother, Mark -- Mike's defensive coordinator at Arizona -- would be arriving Thursday. Mike Stoops also coached defensive backs when he was at OU from 1999-2003. "I still have a connection with some guys," Mike Stoops said. "There isn't many guys left, but there's still about 10 or 12, maybe 15 guys that were playing when I was still here." Alvarez was Iowa's linebackers coach when Stoops was a Hawkeye safety and is part of the Fox Sports broadcast crew assigned to the Fiesta Bowl. "We had a very physical, good practice (Tuesday) in full pads, much like we have through the year on Tuesdays, working, of course, against Boise State's schemes," Stoops said. "I feel like we're making very good progress. "Our game plan is progressing. We just have to finish it up this week and polish it when we get out there." Today will be the Sooners' final workout before the players begin their holiday break. Smith got only a few snaps at receiver and none after the fourth game of the year. But could the experiment be reborn, possibly for the Fiesta Bowl? "We'll see," Smith said. "I've been talking to (receivers coach Kevin) Sumlin, trying to get me in there. We'll see what happens." (NewsOK.com)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesSooners move practice indoors, as Seniors prepare for graduation: Despite temperatures that climbed into the 70s -- a record for Dec. 16 -- the Sooners moved their Saturday practice indoors because of the wind, which consistently whipped at more than 20 miles per hour, with even higher gusts. Seniors were excused from practice, with several taking place in graduation. "We let the seniors go to graduation, but we had a really good practice without 'em," Stoops said. "Guys ran around and really played well." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesPeterson cleared to practice: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Adrian Peterson returned to practice Friday and that he expects the junior running back to play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. "We're going to work towards playing him," Stoops said. But Stoops left himself some wiggle room; he never said definitively that Peterson will play. So it's still possible that Peterson could choose not to risk further damage to his collarbone. Peterson broke the bone Oct. 14 and hasn't played since. It's widely believed Peterson will leave OU after this season and declare for the NFL draft, where he'll probably be a first-round pick. "He's cleared to play," Stoops said. (Dallas Morning News)Injured T. Williams returns to practice: Oklahoma offensive lineman Trent Williams returned to practice Wednesday. Williams, a true freshman right tackle, was carted off the field during last Saturday's Big 12 Championship game in Kansas City, Mo., for an ankle injury. OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said the injury might have appeared more serious than it actually was. "I think it was more painful than it turned out to be," Wilson said after Friday's practice. "He's good. He's had a bad ankle he's fighting through. He's done great." (NewsOK.com)Sooners back to practice: Fresh off the Big 12 Championship, the OU football team returned to practice inside the Everest Training Facility in Norman on Friday evening. Players and coaches met with the media in the Big Red Room under the south end zone of Memorial Stadium to discuss practice and the upcoming bowl trip. (SoonerSports.com)Stoops would like early signing period: OU coach Bob Stoops says he wouldn't object to the NCAA instituting an early signing period for high school football players, like it has for other sports. And this time of the season would be perfect for it. "Some people want it too early. They want it before the season starts," he said. "The ideal situation would be sometime in the middle or late December, like when the junior-college guys sign. "Kids have plenty of time for an official visit. Some kids are going to school in that next semester. It just seems like that would be a good time." (NewsOK.com)Sooners Back to practice: The Sooners returned to the practice field Wednesday, as the Sooners practiced lightly in preparation for Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State to practice this weekend: From Boise FOX 12 on Boise State's practice plans.. "Coach (Chris) Petersen wanted the guys to hit the books and get caught up on school work the next couple of weeks here, and we'll just practice Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week and give them all next week off for finals," said [BSU assistant football coach Jeff ] Choate.
