Perhaps in the end, undrafted rookie Paul Thompson will be a better prospect for the Green Bay Packers' practice squad this year than for their No. 3 quarterback job. But 11 days into training camp, the former Oklahoma quarterback whom most NFL teams considered a receiving prospect, quietly has shown some intriguing ability as an NFL backup quarterback. Thompson has grown noticeably at the NFL's most difficult position since joining the team in late spring. He's demonstrated more than enough athletic ability and arm talent to intrigue the Packers and, depending on how he plays when he gets a chance in the preseason, perhaps could make a run at Ingle Martin for the No. 3 quarterback job this season. OU's Thompson signs as free agent with NY Jets: Oklahoma's Paul Thompson agreed to a free-agent deal Sunday night. [Zac] Taylor signed with Tampa Bay, Thompson with the New York Jets. This means they get a shot -- a very long shot -- at making it in the NFL. With signing bonuses of several thousand instead of several million, they won't be going on spending sprees. But at least they're going somewhere. "It just comes down," Thompson says, "to having the opportunity to prove yourself." (NewsOK.com)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Spring practices will be closed: For 15 days this spring, beginning March 7, the Sooners will work mostly in secret, with only the April 7 spring game certain to be open to the public. Access to two scrimmages remains pending. (NewsOK.com) Sad news; Peterson still worksout despite half-brother being killed: FOXSports.com has learned that Peterson was told in the wee hours Sunday morning that his half-brother was gunned down and killed in a Texas homicide. Sources say he was shot multiple times. The sources also said Peterson was very close to his half-brother and took the news extremely hard. Details are still sketchy and when contacted officials at the Houston Police Department did not have any information available. Despite such heart-breaking news, Peterson pulled his emotions together to have an impressive workout at the NFL's scouting combine. Not only did he run the 40s (4.38 in his first run) but Peterson participated in all the running back drills. Although his head was probably elsewhere, the former Heisman hopeful had what scouts deemed a terrific workout, including a 38.5-inch vertical and 10-foot, 7-inch broad jump. Peterson spent much of the time before and after his workout on the phone with grieving family members and didn't get much sleep Sunday morning. (NewsOK.com) Sooners in the running for top Texas back? Now the Sooners appear to be the early leader for Jermie Calhoun of Van, Texas. Calhoun, who some think is the Lone Star State's premier back, was once considered a lock for the Longhorns. But Texas' curious apparent decision not to recruit Calhoun has shifted the runner's sights north of the Red River. Calhoun has run for more than 3,300 yards and 45 touchdowns the past two seasons. Pendleton FCA finalist: Oklahoma defensive tackle Carl Pendleton is a finalist for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Bobby Bowden Award. Pendleton will travel to attend the presentation ceremony in Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 6. In 2004, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes presented the first of what is now a yearly award. Named for the current Florida State coach, the award honors one college football player for their achievements on the field and in the classroom and for their conduct as a faith model in the community. Nominees must have a 3.0 GPA or better and must also have the backing of his school's athletic director and head football coach. The award is presented each year prior to the Bowl Championship Series' national title game. Pendleton, a junior and a three-year starter, has decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility - but not to turn pro. It could, however, contend for a national championship were there a playoff in place. "I guess I can be a spokesman for a playoff system since I'm on my way out of here," OU quarterback Paul Thompson said Wednesday. "I think playing it on the field is the only way. There's going to be speculation year in and year out as to who the top team is. With the system right now it's pretty much impossible to declare the top two teams." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Oklahoma's Thompson leads the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship: So what if it's a week earlier than Oklahoma had hoped for? The eighth-ranked Sooners will still finish their season in Glendale, Ariz., and that's good enough for coach Bob Stoops. The Sooners' 21-7 victory over No. 19 Nebraska in the Big 12 title game Saturday night earned them a berth in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day. But combined with UCLA's 13-9 upset of No. 2 Southern California earlier Saturday, Oklahoma's win also raised questions of what might have been had a blown onside kick call not led to a 34-33 loss at Oregon on Sept. 16. The BCS title game is Jan. 8, also in Glendale. Stoops was in no mood to play what-if, though, after his team won its fourth Big 12 title. "You know what? We can't do anything about it," Stoops said. Sooners rally to beat Tech 34-24: Chris Brown started out three spots behind Adrian Peterson on Oklahoma's depth chart at running back. He never thought he'd be the key to a big win down the stretch. Brown, the fourth-string tailback, ran for two fourth-quarter scores and Paul Thompson threw for a career-high 309 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 17 Sooners rallied to beat Texas Tech 34-24 on Saturday night. "The things we've gone through, whoever's in there we're going to win with them," Thompson said. "That's our mind-set. We've got confidence. If something happens no one's freaking out." (AP/SooonerSports.com)Johnson OK after hit: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he was encouraged by doctors' reports about receiver Manuel Johnson, who was carted off the field Saturday night after experiencing "numbness." "So far, all the X-rays were negative," Stoops said. "Everything (movement), on his way to the hospital, is all coming back to him. At this point, everything is looking good... hopefully, he'll be fine." Late Saturday evening, Johnson was still in the emergency room at OU Medical Center. He was expected to be admitted for an overnight stay for what Stoops called precautionary reasons. Early in the fourth quarter, Johnson caught a short pass, then was hit � fumbling on the play. Texas Tech recovered at the OU 35, but no one was concerned about a momentum swing. Apparently knocked unconscious, Johnson went down on the Tech sidelines. Tech medical personnel immediately waved for OU's medical staff. And the crowd went silent as doctors hovered over Johnson. Hartley, whose kickoffs have routinely gone out of the end zone this season, did not kick off after the opening kick. Instead, freshman Blake Baublits kicked off after the Sooners' scores. Baublits is a walk-on from McKinney, Texas. (Tulsa World) Gutierrez starts:, Brown gets workload Junior Jacob Gutierrez started at tailback for OU, but [Chris] Brown played almost the entire second half. He had nine carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. "We were in a close game, and they chose me to be out for the remainder of the game to finish it off," Brown said. "That really touched me and made me want to perform to my whole ability." (Dallas Morning News)Thompson honored with Don Key Award: Quarterback Paul Thompson received the award -- which honors an outstanding senior for his character on and off the field -- before Saturday's game against Texas Tech. But according to the award's namesake, it could have just as easily been given to defensive tackle Carl Pendleton, who is forgoing his senior year to take care of his brother. "They start voting about a month before the award, and there were two names over and over," said Key, a former OU offensive lineman whose career was cut short by injury. "Paul and Carl, Paul and Carl, Paul and Carl. I have no say-so in the process. The coaches finally decide. "I think they chose Paul because of his incredible attitude toward being a team player." Patrick fumbled twice in the second half of this year's 59-0 victory over Middle Tennessee, including on the goal line that would have been a sure touchdown. Gutierrez capped off last year's 173-yard effort against Baylor with a fumble that the Bears turned into a quick touchdown that forced overtime. "If we put the ball in your hands, we're entrusting you to be smart and take care of this ball," said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. "Those players at running back and every player on offense need to continue to grow and realize that is the key thing to winning and losing." Wilson said he's been disappointed "that we've been as immature with the ball as we've been." (Tulsa World)Thompson not taking Colorado lightly: Any game played the week after Adrian Peterson gets hurt is going to be a challenge, but Oklahoma has a few other hurdles to clear while trying to define its offense without its star. Colorado comes to Norman a week after its first win of the season, which could have the Buffaloes on an emotional high. The pressure to move the ball likely falls on senior quarterback Paul Thompson, who has warned his team about being fooled by Colorado's 1-6 record. "They're real close to having some wins," Thompson said of Colorado, which lost 14-13 to a then-highly ranked Georgia team. "If we sit there and look at their record, then we'll get beat. They're a good team." Mike Stoops had helped recruit Gutierrez and knew his talent, and also knew Peterson would be ahead of him for two years. Bob Stoops asked Gutierrez, and Gutierrez didn't take long to mull it over. "I said, 'Listen, by no means am I wanting this, but I at least want you to know for yourself if it's better for you, that it's there,' " Bob Stoops said. "He said, 'No, coach. I'm a Sooner. I'm going to contribute any way I can.' He's been a great team leader."
