OL Jeff Vinson no longer with team, plans to transfer: Stoops announced junior offensive linemen Jeff Vinson has decided to transfer and is no longer with the team. Vinson, a junior college transfer, did not play this season. "He's had some injury and feels he has a better opportunity somewhere else to be able to handle his injury and still play," Stoops said. Lepak to make first start at center: Brian Lepak is making his first Oklahoma start at center Saturday. If the Sooners beat Oklahoma State, Bob Stoops maintains an 11-year run of winning regular seasons. If they don't, the Cowboys bask in a BCS glow that should just about blind whatever forgettable bowl 6-6 OU qualifies for. It's a pretty big moment for a guy who chose Colorado State over Tulsa and TCU coming out of Claremore High School, a transfer who the Sooners took as a walk-on a year and a half ago. "I anticipate him having a great week," said OU offensive line coach James Patton, who plugged Lepak in for center Ben Habern last Saturday at Texas Tech after Habern broke his leg in the second quarter. "I'm not worried about him," said senior left tackle Trent Williams. "I have a lot of faith in him, honestly," said senior left guard Brian Simmons. ( Tulsa World)

Mensik plays at TE and RT: Oklahoma's Eric Mensik started the game against Texas A&M at tight end, but in the 3rd quarter moved to right tackle in replace of Cory Brandon. "We don't like to (play Eric at both positions), but we're in that situation," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Jones Career High: Landry Jones' 392 passing yards is a career best and the seventh most in school history. Jones also tossed for 336 vs. Tulsa earlier this season.

Several Sooners had first career start: One week after a penalty-filled effort against BYU, Oklahoma's offensive line was flagged just once Saturday night, on Jarvis Jones' false start in the second quarter. OU coaches said changes would be made, and they were. Ben Habern got his first start at center, true freshman Tyler Evans got his first start at right guard and Stephen Good made his first start at left guard. Jones, who played right guard last week, lined up at right tackle. ( Tulsa World)
More on OU's O-line: Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said he's confident the Sooners have plenty of players capable of playing on OU's offensive of line.
"We feel we've got seven, eight, nine guys that can play. We're trying to find out some consistency, who are the guys who are going to play," Wilson said. "We feel we've got a couple, three guards that can play and three tackles, so we’re just rotating guys."

A few surprises on OU's depth chart: It's looking like former tight end Brody Eldridge could be Oklahoma's starting center Saturday against Brigham Young. The Sooners released their official Week 1 depth chart, and Eldridge is listed as the first-team center, ahead of Ben Habern, who just returned to practice from an inflamed back last week. Another surprise on the offensive line depth chart is Jarvis Jones being listed as the starter at right guard, instead of sophomore Stephen Good, who is Brian Simmons' backup at left guard. Offensive line play helps OU offense in scrimmage: Oklahoma's football practice Wednesday (8/12) featured a scrimmage. By most accounts, the Sooners' high-powered offense outplayed the defense. "I can admit it," said defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. "They teach us to admit our faults, be a man about it, and they got us in the end. But that just helps us." McCoy said one of the big reasons for the offense's success was the play of the offensive line, specifically the play of Brian Simmons, who spends most of practice trying to block the All-American. ( The Oklahoman) Notable at OU's ccrimmage:Junior defensive end Pryce Macon did not practice. He was wearing a knee brace. Junior running back DeMarco Murray was a partial participant in Wednesday's workout. Stoops on opening practices to the public: OU coach Bob Stoops' decision this week to open up two practices caught some by surprise. But Stoops on Friday admitted a soft spot for the legions of Sooner fans who are just dying to watch their team. "We want them to watch to some degree," Stoops said. "But again, I just think there's so much more out there nowadays. I feel we're doing the right things, I just want to be able to let them enjoy it when you can here and there." ( Tulsa World) OU Injury News: A handful of Sooners continue to miss practice for various reasons, most due to injury. Safety Joseph Ibiloye (knee), cornerback Jamell Fleming (back), defensive end David King (concussion), safety Kevin Brent (shoulder) and running back Jonathan Miller (undisclosed) are among those currently out. Kevin Wilson hopes to prove doubters wrong about Oklahoma's offensive line: During Thursday's edition of College Football Live, ESPN analyst and former Heisman winner Andre Ware made a bold, if not bizarre, prediction. The Oklahoma Sooners, ranked No. 3 in the preseason and returning the Heisman winner at quarterback, would lose four games this season, including the opener to Brigham Young. "It's documented that everybody is concerned about our offensive line. I'm not. At all," offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Friday during OU media day. "The line is as talented as any in this league and the country. It needs competition, it needs experience, it needs to grow. I can't help that it's not seasoned, but I love the ability with what we're working with. "I think it has a chance to be a phenomenal group." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOklahoma linemen Jason Hannan seeks transfer: University of Oklahoma offensive lineman Jason Hannan has left the team, according to teammates. Hannan, a 6-foot-3, 283-pound sophomore from Waxahachie, Texas, initially had been counted on this spring as a potential replacement for three-year starter Jon Cooper at center. Hannan played in seven games as Cooper's backup last season. "He's transferring — he's leaving," senior Brian Simmons said after Thursday's practice. "I don't know the details, but he's no longer with us any more." Redshirt freshman Ben Habern began the spring as Cooper's replacement and has remained there, said Brian Simmons, a senior left guard. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOffensive line backups compete for playing time: OU returns all five starters on the offensive line from last season. But OU coach Bob Stoops said that doesn't mean the backups won't have a chance to compete for playing time during spring drills. "There are a lot of guys that are coming on that are going to have a chance to compete," Stoops said. "Cory Brandon, Brian Simmons, Donald Stephenson and Jason Hannan are coming back. There are a number of guys that really have a chance. We've got to get them out there and get them working, and they'll have a chance to do that." (The Oklahoman)
Five-star wide receiver eyes Oklahoma: Marlon Brown the 6-foot-5, 205-pound five-star wide receiver from Harding High School in Memphis, Tenn., finished his junior season with 41 catches for over 860 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 carries and 630 yards and 10 scores. Brown, Scout.com's No. 2 wide receiver nationwide, has over 20 scholarship offers, but denies a favorite. "Right now I'm really wide open," he admitted. "I'll probably have a top five or six during the summer. I'm just taking things slow and not worrying about it right now." While Brown isn't sure if he's going to visit Oklahoma during the summer, he admits they meet his criteria. "Coaches are really important to me and coach Bob Stoops and his staff are some of the best coaches in the country. Every year Oklahoma is in the race for the national championship." (Scout.com)

Senior Michael Cohen will handle long kicks and junior Mike Knall will kick in short-field situations. (Dallas Morning News)Oklahoma fan asked to stop fundraiser for Mitchell: Just hours after Oklahoma football recruit Herman Mitchell was shot to death Friday in Houston, Adam Fineberg started raising money for Mitchell's family. But after raising $4,500, enough to cover almost half the cost of Mitchell's funeral, Fineberg stopped. An OU compliance officer told him his actions would constitute an NCAA rules violation against the Sooners... That money is considered illegal financial assistance under NCAA rules because Mitchell's brother is a sophomore fullback at Westfield High School in Spring, Texas, and because Fineberg is an OU fan who attends Sooner football games and solicited donations through an OU fan Web site... OU spokesman Kenny Mossman said the an official with the university's compliance office contacted Fineberg on Monday asking to him halt his fundraising efforts until the OU received a rules interpretation from the NCAA. That interpretation came Tuesday. "This is not a permissible expense for OU or someone who could be construed as an OU supporter,” said Mossman, an associate athletic director for communications. "We're not trying to be the bad guys, but we have to play by their rules.” (In parts and more at NewsOK.com)Murray, Franks and Holmes may be used in returns: OU will use Reggie Smith and Juaquin Iglesias as the kick returners Saturday. Both handled the job last season. Stoops said Murray might also be used, depending on how many carries he gets from his running back spot. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesSooners search for backup at center: At right guard, Brandon Walker is the returning starter, but Brian Simmons held the spot last spring while Walker worked his way back from knee surgery. Now the two could end up splitting time. And the newest battle is for the backup job at center. With the announcement Tuesday that sophomore Chase Beeler had left the team, that spot on the depth chart became vacant. OU coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday that Walker is capable of playing center, but the coaching staff is also looking at sophomore Noah Hughey and true freshman Jason Hannan in that role. (NewsOK.com)
QB race still wide open: It appears Oklahoma will conduct its second major preseason scrimmage Saturday night with Keith Nichol, Sam Bradford and Joey Halzle all still in the hunt. "Not trying to drag it out, but right now, like we've got three tight ends, we've kind of got three quarterbacks," offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Thursday between the Sooners' two practices. "Everybody says no one's separating, but it's not because they're stinking. They're all playing really good. So we'll just let them keep playing." Wilson said all three took snaps in Wednesday night's mini-scrimmage, when the Sooners ran the ball more than they did in the previous Saturday's full scrimmage, concentrating particularly on short-yardage situations. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
Injury Report: The Sooners emerged from a rugged game at A&M with some hurts, but no apparent major injuries. On Sunday, Bob S toops said Patrick (ankle sprain) should be "fine" and offensive guard Brandon Walker (shoulder) was not believed to be serious. Walker, who left the game at one point, returned and finished on the field, as did linebacker Zach Latimer (neck). (NewsOK.com)Peterson targets Bedlam return: Injured OU running back Adrian Peterson said Saturday he wants to return for the regular-season finale vs. Oklahoma State on Nov. 25. "Hopefully Oklahoma State, that's a possibility," Peterson said during a sideline interview with ABC. "But I've got to check with the doctors, take X-rays and see how it heals." (Dallas Morning News)Lack of execution in second half: OU's offensive line opened gaping holes for running back Allen Patrick in the early going, leading to two scoring drives and 101 rushing yards for Patrick — in the first quarter. The success slowed in the second half, with the Sooners managing only 29 of its 224 rushing yards over the final two periods. "Just us not executing as cleanly," OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said. "And they did a better job of getting off blocks and playing physical." (NewsOK.com)Venables praises Holmes: Oklahoma cornerback Lendy Holmes made one of the biggest defensive plays of the season Saturday, and it came on Texas A&M's longest gain of the night. Aggies tailback Michael Goodson ran by safety Nic Harris on an option and sped for 58 yards on his second play from scrimmage. The run would have covered 71 yards, and scored a touchdown, had Holmes not hustled after Goodson and caught him from behind. "Tremendous," OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Sunday. "Just a great effort play. A great example. It will be a tremendous teaching tool on why you don't ever give up on a play." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
OU- Iowa State game time set for 11:30 FSN: Oklahoma and Iowa State will kickoff at 11:30 a.m., when the two collide in Norman, Saturday. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Network. It is the Big 12 home opener for the Sooners. Oklahoma and Iowa State have not played since the 2003 season when the Sooners rolled to a 53-7 victory at Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones' last trip to Norman 2002) resulted in a 49-3 OU triumph. This is the first of two straight home games for OU, which will entertain Colorado the following week. (SoonerSports Release)
Mistakes cost Sooners' offensive: Kevin Wilson calls it an S.I.W. Self-inflicted wounds. False starts, fumbles, sacks, dropped passes. Plays where the offense stops itself, rather than the defense stopping it. The Sooners fumbled six times, losing three, and were flagged for moving before the snap five times. "We had 63 plays as an offense, and we're looking at about 15 to 18 of those being negatives," Wilson said Sunday. "We'll have this outcome again if we don't learn from those mistakes." (NewsOK.com)
McCoy escape allows UT touchdown: Both Stoops and defensive coordinator Brent Venables reviewed Sunday a costly play the OU defense failed to make during Texas' first touchdown drive. On third-and-10 from the Sooners' 37, Colt McCoy rolled left to elude the rush of both safety Nic Harris and linebacker Zach Latimer, then found Quan Cosby for 16 yards. "We've got a blitz on and come free and let him escape us," Stoops said. Instead of punting, the Longhorns ran two more plays before Selvin Young's 15-yard touchdown run. (Tulsa World)
More playing time for younger players: OU offensive tackle Chris Messner wasn't hurt when he left Saturday's game in the final minutes. Wilson said he was simply trying to get one of his younger players, true freshman Trent Williams, some playing time. Williams played guard, and Branndon Braxton moved out to tackle. (NewsOK.com)
