Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesFormer Sooner advises Williams to stay in school: After the BCS National Championship, offensive tackle Trent Williams traveled home to Longview, Texas, unsure of his next move. It was former Sooner and current Washington Redskins wide receiver Malcolm Kelly -- Williams- high school teammate at Longview and college roommate at OU -- who helped convince Williams to stay, according to a source close to both Kelly and Williams. "Trent would change his mind every 10 minutes. He didn-t know what he was going to do," the source said. "But Malcolm encouraged him to come back. Trent really trusts Malcolm, and that made a huge difference." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesWashington and Kelly agree to four-year deal: The Washington Redskins completed negotiations with two more draft picks, agreeing to terms with wide receiver Malcolm Kelly -- one of three big receivers they selected in the second round -- and punter Durant Brooks. With training camp scheduled to begin in a week, only three of the Redskins' 10 draft picks are without an agreement. Kelly's deal is for four years and $3.36 million, which includes $1.655 million guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be identified because a contract has not been signed. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
OU Coaches talk about the no-huddle offense: The Sooners have joined the growing horde of teams experimenting with no huddles. "It's the trend," said Sooner defensive coordinator Brent Venables. In the same way the wishbone took over college football in the 1970s, and the spread did the same almost a decade ago, the no-huddle is all the rage in the 21st century, going from fad to standard in a season or two. "I don't think offenses would do it if it weren't advantageous, to a degree," Venables said. Bob Stoops says he ordered implementation of the no-huddle for mathematical reasons. "I want to get as many at-bats as they do," Stoops said. "I don't want anyone having more snaps than we do." Wilson, OU's offensive coordinator, ran the no-huddle for four years at Northwestern. Twice, his Northwestern team led the nation in offensive plays. But I'll bet Northwestern ranked high in plays allowed, too. That's the delicate nature of the no-huddle. Even if it helps your offense, it can hurt your defense. "To me, the problems are, can you protect your defense?" Wilson said. "At Northwestern, our defenses weren't any good. We didn't really worry about helping them." That's why Wilson must be careful. For example, coaches say OU this spring practiced about 60 percent huddle, 40 percent no-huddle. (The Oklahoman)OU confirms Malcolm Kelly to run another 40: University of Oklahoma spokesman Kenny Mossman said Kelly will run the 40-yard dash again on Wednesday, presumably on AstroTurf, after running 4.68 and 4.75 last Wednesday. After his workout, Kelly sounded off about the setup, particularly a perceived lack of loyalty to him by "certain people" on the OU football staff. He also criticized the OU training staff for misdiagnosing an injury that kept him out of the Fiesta Bowl. Kelly was upset because he and OU strength coach Jerry Schmidt agreed he would run his 40s on the AstroTurf of the Mosier Center instead of the Field Turf of the Everest Center, on which every other OU football player has worked out for NFL scouts the last two years. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesFormer OU WR Kelly apologizes: Former Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly went on a Tyler, Texas, radio station Thursday evening to apologize for publicly ripping the Sooner strength staff after his pro day. "I should've went to the guy I was mad at rather than put it in the media like that," Kelly said, referring to OU strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt. "That was a mistake on my part." Kelly blamed the OU strength staff for changing the testing surface from AstroTurf to field turf the morning of the pro day. Schmidt said it was the more than 35 pro scouts in attendance who asked him to move the testing to field turf. "I can't say I was prepared as I should've been," Kelly said. "I hadn't ever run on that surface as far as my training goes. "But I want to make one thing clear: I'm not blaming anyone for the time that I ran." Kelly told the radio station that he was thinking about his family when he ranted about the OU staff. "This isn't just about me. I don't want my parents to work again in their lifetime," he said. "That can be the difference between running this and running that. I was thinking about my family when I said all of that stuff. "You never saw me say stuff after a game, like, why didn't they throw me the ball, I was open on every play. I never want to portray myself as a guy that complains. The other guys who were training wanted to say the same things I did, but I went out and said it." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesStoops responds to Kelly's Pro Day comments: Kelly accused OU of "misdiagnosing" a December thigh injury, which kept him from participating in the Fiesta Bowl and from training for the NFL Draft until last month. Kelly said he was told by OU doctors that he had a deep thigh bruise, though a February MRI revealed he had suffered a partial quadriceps tear. Sooner coach Bob Stoops said Kelly never practiced after suffering the thigh injury and took issue with Kelly's accusations that OU's doctors erred. "I don't think that is fair," Stoops said. "A lot of deep tissue injuries take a while to figure out. Our doctors do as good a job as anybody in the country. Regardless of what his injury was, misdiagnosed or not, it was a deep tissue injury. He never played. It isn't like he played a game and re-hurt it. He would not have done anything different than he's done, which is rest it for a long period of time, which he did, and rehab it." Stoops said Kelly's assertion that he would've been able to play had the tear been found earlier is off-base. "He didn't do anything the whole time before we went to the Fiesta Bowl. He didn't practice once," Stoops said. "He didn't practice at the Fiesta Bowl, even though we tried to warm him up. It's not realistic for that injury to heal that fast." Wednesday, OU spokesman Kenny Mossman conferred with members of the Sooner training staff, who said that Kelly was initially diagnosed with a bruise, but that the injury was later upgraded to a strain within 48 hours. "I had everything set up for where I wanted to do it at," Kelly said. "I get up here this morning and it's a whole different deal. This is my life. It's got to do with me and my family. This is what I do, play football, and I'm supposed to run as fast as I can. I was slipping all over the place during my drill work. I can't say I'm pleased with anything today. "People want to say surface is surface, but it's a lot more to it than that," Kelly said. "You have to think about how much ground time you have running on this mushy surface here and how much ground time you have on Astroturf. "Just a little bit of time could mean a whole lot of draft money." (The Oklahoman)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKelly, Smith among others participating in pro work out: Today at OU's Everest Indoor Training Center in his first and only workout before NFL scouts, Kelly will have the opportunity to silence the questions about his health for good. "I just have to show them with my drills, my change of direction, that I have no knee problems," said Kelly, speaking publicly for the first time about the rumors, which likely started with Kelly tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in junior high and later having arthroscopic knee surgery after his sophomore season at OU. "I've been working so that tomorrow morning I can come out here and prove them wrong and shut everybody up. I guarantee they won't be saying I have knee problems (anymore)." Former Sooner defensive back Reggie Smith, who's been recovering from a broken big toe, will also be working out in front of scouts for the first time. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesBox expected out remainder of spring football: Enid's Austin Box is expected to miss the rest of Oklahoma's spring football practice with a sprained elbow. "That was the likely scenario, according to coach (Bob) Stoops," said OU sports information director Kenny Mossman. Box, who redshirted as a true freshman, was starting at linebacker before his injury. He did not play in the Sooners' first major scrimmage Saturday. Mossman said he didn't know when the injury occured. Box dislocated the same left elbow during his senior season at Enid. Box could not be reached for comment Monday night. (The Enid News & Eagle)Agent clears up rumors about Malcolm Kelly's health: Agent Chad Speck sent a letter to all 32 NFL teams Monday, along with a letter from the doctor who has been treating Kelly, to let them know that the receiver projected as a possible first-round draft pick is healthy. The injury first was diagnosed as a deep thigh bruise, but Kelly actually had a small quadriceps tear. The agent also pointed out that Dr. Michael Hatrak of Alpharetta, Ga., also found "all other structures assessed within normal limits." Kelly tore an ACL in junior high and had arthroscopic knee surgery during his sophomore year at Oklahoma. "The intent of the letter is certainly to end speculation on Malcolm's health status," Speck said. "He is 100 percent healthy and as Dr. Hatrak states, has no further risk of injury." "The rumors that are currently circulating regarding his knees are irresponsible and untrue!" Speck wrote to NFL general managers and scouts. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKelly to enter NFL Draft: Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly has decided to bypass his senior year of college eligibility to enter the National Football League Draft. OU head coach Bob Stoops confirmed Kelly's decision Thursday afternoon. "We're excited for Malcolm and his family," Stoops said. "He was an oustanding player in our program and we appreciate all of his efforts. We look forward to watching him in the NFL. He is well-suited to professional football in many ways and we are sure that the attributes that made him such a success for us will serve him equally well on that level." Last season, Kelly, a Longview, Texas native, was the Sooners' second-leading receiver in catches, yards and touchdowns with 49 grabs for 821 yards and nine TD. Among the OU regulars, he was tops with 16.8 yards per reception. "I felt like the time was right to make this decision," said Kelly. "My family and I have talked it over for the last few days and decided this was the way to go. I've talked to a lot of guys who I trust who are playing in the NFL and I value their input. "OU and the coaches there gave me the best opportunity to reach the pro level. Going to OU was really the thing that put me in the position to be able to make this decision." (SoonerSports PR)

Sooners win big over Canes: By the time Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford threw his school record-tying fifth touchdown pass, the bad memories from past Miami games were long gone. Malcolm Kelly caught three of Bradford's TD passes and Reggie Smith returned a fumble for a score as the No. 5 Sooners rolled over Miami 51-13 in their first meeting since the Hurricanes swept three games in the 1980s. "That didn't matter," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "It makes for a good story, but that's a long time ago." (SoonerSports.com) Patrick early exit: Starting running back Allen Patrick came out of the game after the first two carries of the second half and never returned. Coach Bob Stoops said Patrick, a senior who missed last week's season opener against North Texas with a sprained right ankle, didn't return because he was experiencing some minor cramping. (Dallas Morning News) Moving Up: Malcolm Kelly's three touchdowns give him 17 for his career, tying Carrollton Creekview-ex Travis Wilson for second on OU's all-time career list. (Dallas Morning News) In the books: (Sam) Bradford's five TD passes against Miami tied the OU single game record. He became just the third Sooner to toss five touchdowns in a game. Jason White accomplished the feat three times, while Josh Heupel did it twice. Bradford was also just the second QB to throw for five TDs against the Hurricanes (Cade McNown, UCLA, 1998). "And a lot of talent. It's going to be exciting. It's going to be a challenge. "I still think in the end, I'll take our secondary any day," Kelly said. "I get good preparation all during the week going against Reggie (Smith), going against Marcus (Walker). On Saturday, it's going to be that same type of competition, so I'll be ready for it." (Tulsa World)OU's crowd no worry for 'Canes: Oklahoma drew 84,472 fans to its season-opening 79-10 victory against North Texas on Saturday, marking the football team's 50th consecutive sellout. If the same number of fans attending last week's opener show up to Memorial Stadium for Saturday's game against Miami, it will rank as the eighth-largest crowd ever to see a UM game. Miami is 8-2 all-time playing before the 10 largest audiences in school history. Each of those games has been played on the road or in a neutral site. UM coach Randy Shannon scoffed at the notion that his players will be affected by the crowd on Saturday, no matter how big it is. "It won't be a shock," Shannon said. "Some of these (UM players) are from Texas. They've played in big games before in Dallas (with) 30,000 or 40,000 fans screaming. Just because it's Oklahoma and there'll be 80,000 or 105,000 those fans won't make any difference between those yard lines. They won't." (Palm Beach Post)Shannon: No time to celebrate: Randy Shannon said he put his first victory as head coach of the Miami Hurricanes behind him in "two, maybe three” minutes. That's because he knew what was next, Shannon told the Miami Herald. "You can get Gatorade dumped on your head and (have) everybody in Miami patting you on the shoulder,” he said. "But you know what? It ain't going to ever help you win the game the next week against Oklahoma.” (NewsOK.com)

While he [Malcolm Kelly] admits he thinks about his future from time to time, he knows it's too early for all that [high draft] hype. "I'm not gonna say I don't think about it," Kelly said. "That's all you dream about your whole life. That's why you play this game -- to be able to make a living out of it. People have been saying that, but it don't really mean anything. I haven't done anything this year. "I have a lot of stuff I need to get done (before I'm ready to play in the NFL.)" (NewsOK.com)Patrick runs light Monday practice, no timetable set: [Allen] Patrick did not practice with the team Monday. Stoops said there's no cut-off day for deciding if Patrick will play. "If we think he's close enough to full speed and not going to re-injure it and make a difference for us, then he'll play," Stoops said. (Norman Transcript)Bob Stoops statement on Herman Mitchell: From the Tulsa World.. "Yeah, it's really sad. It's tragic," Stoops said. "All of us are saddened. Just don't know what to say in those situations. He was a great young guy, was just up here a few weeks ago when we were in our summer two-a-day work. He and his mom spent a good part of the day here. We loved having him. He was a great young man. Prayers go out to his family, his teammates, coaches and friends. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesSam Bradford's favorite target? Malcolm Kelly? Starting quarterback Sam Bradford hasn't thrown a pass in a game yet, but he may already have a favorite target in Kelly. "When you see No. 4 out there one-on-one, you got to like your chances," said Bradford, who was named the starter last week. "After you see him on film, you think, 'How did he catch that?' "It's definitely easy to have confidence to know you have him there." (NewsOK.com)Did you know? You can count on one hand the number of OKC boys who have actually made it [who started as OU quarterback] -- and you'd still have a thumb and finger to spare. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOklahoma's misuse of timeouts in second half: The Sooners burned their final two timeouts of the second half on defense with 4:24 remaining, spending their allotment without making the Broncos run a play. Stoops said some late substituting by Boise left the Sooners with a disadvantaged personnel group on the field. Stoops, who argued that the Boise player left the field too late, used his final timeout to offset the Broncos' changes. "We were in a bad position and I wasn't going to give a bad play up, just because of our alignment,” Stoops said. (NewsOK.com)Stoops not anxious about A. Peterson decision: Some might expect Stoops to spend an anxious next few days, as Adrian Peterson makes a final decision about returning for his senior season. "No. I'm perfectly fine with whatever he wants to do," Stoops contended. "I'm going to do my best to give him some information and make sure he's well-informed from the proper sources. I'm for what he wants. He's got to look at himself in the mirror every day and be satisfied with what he's doing. I think too much of the time people don't give that enough weight and respect. It's his life to live." (Tulsa World)BSU's Peterson on playing in the Fiesta Bowl: "We really felt like we belonged here all along," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "We really did. (Dallas Morning News) Kelly MRI scheduled: While broadcast reports said Malcolm Kelly had suffered a concussion Monday night, the Sooner wide receiver, in fact, injured his knee during the first quarter. An initial examination revealed no ligament damage, though Kelly was scheduled for an MRI Tuesday. "They think it's cartilage," Stoops said. "Hopefully it's not too bad." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
Coach Stoops meets with the Media Tuesday morning: OU head coach Bob Stoops met with the media one final time at the team hotel Tuesday morning before the Sooners departed for Oklahoma City. Boise State defeated the Sooners, 43-42, in overtime in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 in Glendale. Poolside at the team headquarters at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort, Stoops discussed the events of the game, the upcoming decision for running back Adrian Peterson, and the future for the Oklahoma football program. (More at SoonerSports.com)Stoops' failed challenge: OU coach Bob Stoops tried to stop the Broncos' early momentum by challenging the spot after Derek Schouman's 6-yard catch on third-and-5. Schouman bobbled the ball initially before securing the catch, and officials ruled that his forward progress was enough for a first down. Stoops lost his only coach's challenge with 9:25 remaining in the first. The replay officials' decision was huge. On the next play, James caught a 49-yard touchdown. (Dallas Morning News)Eyes on Peterson: There were two interested parties watching running back Adrian Peterson's every move in pregame warmups Monday night. One was Peterson's father, Nelson, who stood in the stands wearing a white T-shirt with a picture of his then-7-year-old son on the front, wearing a powder blue No. 32 jersey as he posed for a youth football shot. The words "Beginning Of" and "All Day" framed the picture. Down on the field as Peterson loosened up and ran through receiving drills, Cleveland Browns scout Kevin Kelly stood about 25 feet away, scribbling in an orange notebook. (Tulsa World)More on Malcolm Kelly Injury status: Malcolm Kelly, the Sooners' leading receiver coming in, went without a catch for the first time in 22 games, dating back to OU's loss to Texas on Oct. 8, 2005. The reason, according to reports by OU's radio network and Fox Sports, was a concussion sustained in the first quarter. Kelly took a hard fall going for a deep post in the end zone between Boise State defensive backs Marty Tadman and Orlando Scandrick late in the first quarter. He stayed in the game another seven plays before giving way to Quentin Chaney the last three quarters. (Tulsa World)Practice scare closes the roof? The decision was made when a pregame parachute drop was canceled. The drop was canceled after an accident occurred during practices last week at Arizona State's Sun Devil Stadium. One of the parachutists landed in the stands. The decision was made because of the tighter confines of the roof at University of Phoenix Stadium. "For safety reasons, we decided not to do it,” Fiesta Bowl vice president Shawn Schoeffler said. (NewsOK.com)Smoky Start: Officials shot off fireworks during pregame introductions, and the smoke filled the stadium during the first half. The retractable roof remained closed, however, and players had to fight through it. OU's Marcus Walker dropped a possible interception in the second quarter after losing track of the ball in the air. (Dallas Morning News) Just think if Al Michaels were there, the rant we could of heard fireworks are just "stupid!" Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
Mike Stoops visit the Sooners: OU coach Bob Stoops got a visit from younger brother and former co-defensive coordinator Mike Stoops on Wednesday. Mike Stoops, now head coach at Arizona (100 miles due south in Tucson), got to reunite with his brother, several staff members and a dozen or so players. "It's fun. I love seeing him," said Bob Stoops, who added that another brother, Mark -- Mike's defensive coordinator at Arizona -- would be arriving Thursday. Mike Stoops also coached defensive backs when he was at OU from 1999-2003. "I still have a connection with some guys," Mike Stoops said. "There isn't many guys left, but there's still about 10 or 12, maybe 15 guys that were playing when I was still here." (Tulsa World)Boise State hits the practice field: Boise State practiced Wednesday at Scottsdale Community College for the first time since breaking for Christmas on Saturday. The Broncos will practice today, Friday and Saturday at Scottsdale CC, then hold a walk-through at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday. Scottsdale CC has one full practice field and two half fields. The Broncos seemed to have good energy in the 15 minutes of practice the media were allowed to watch. They met with some local children after practice. (Idaho Statesman)A Boys and Girls Clubs TD Salute? When Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly spoke to a group of kids from Phoenix-area Boys and Girls Clubs after practice Wednesday, he received an interesting request. If he scores a touchdown in the Fiesta Bowl, he was asked, would he be willing to clasp his hands -- fingertips to wrists, palms together -- like the Boys and Girls Club symbol? "Yeah,” Kelly said, nodding, "I can do that.” (NewsOK.com)Stoops visits with former Coach Alvarez: Bob Stoops had another reunion Wednesday when retired Wisconsin head coach (and now athletic director) Barry Alvarez showed up. Alvarez was Iowa's linebackers coach when Stoops was a Hawkeye safety and is part of the Fox Sports broadcast crew assigned to the Fiesta Bowl. He spent Wednesday getting tips on the Sooners from Stoops. "You know how that is, a player-coach relationship," Stoops said. (Tulsa World)Baressi travels with team to AZ, future unclear: A lost season for Ben Baressi at least ends with some reward. Baressi is with the Sooners in Arizona, after missing the season due to an undisclosed medical condition. The offensive lineman's future with the team is uncertain. (NewsOK.com)Oklahoma practice time spent: the team worked considerably on all facets of the game. Garrett Hartley had a second straight solid day of kicking field goals. The defense spent most of the practice on the practice field adjacent to the main game field at Pinnacle High School. The offense did extensive work on its passing game. (SoonerSports.com)Wager between State Governors: Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry and Idaho Gov. James Risch have made a friendly wager on the outcome of the Fiesta Bowl. The governor whose team comes up short will donate a basket of goods made in his home state to a charitable organization of the winning governor's choice. The University of Oklahoma and Boise State University will meet on New Year's Day in the annual game. ``I have unwavering confidence that Coach (Bob) Stoops and our Sooners will make Monday a triumphant one for the Crimson and Cream,'' Henry said. ``Boise State is an excellent team, but I plan to kick off the New Year with another OU victory.'' (KOTV.com)NFL draft expert on Adrian Peterson: Gil Brandt, the former Cowboys personnel director, is now a senior analyst for NFL.com. He said each case must be looked at individually before determining whether a player should go pro. "The big thing with Peterson is what it his collarbone going to be like," Brandt said. "That's where you have to go and get a good doctors' report on it. Or, have your doctor call the Oklahoma doctor and have them send you X-rays and so forth. "I hope the guy stays in school. I would say there isn't much chance that he will stay in school." (Dallas Morning News)Wilson made Sooners' offense go: Tulsa World

Oklahoma Sooners Football Articles and NotesStoops gets Big 12 Championship bonus: Saturday's Big 12 championship win capped a lucrative week for Bob Stoops, who attained several contractual performance bonuses. Stoops earned $80,000 for OU's Big 12 title game win and another $100,000 for advancing to the Fiesta Bowl (thanks, Texas). He'd already padded his receivables ledger $30,000 for being voted Big 12 Coach of the Year earlier in the week. (NewsOK.com) Coach Stoops still has $235,000 in possible bonuses by seasons end.Walker Injury allows Wolfe playing time: OU corner Marcus Walker was injured while covering a punt with 3:33 remaining in the second quarter. His injury opened the door for D.J. Wolfe, who has gotten little playing time since giving up a 33-yard touchdown pass against Texas. On third-and-3 from the Nebraska 27, Zac Taylor threw a deep pass intended for Terrence Nunn. Wolfe made his first interception of the season. (Dallas Morning News)Fastest Big 12 title game TD: When Patrick powered into the end zone on the Sooners' first play, the Big 12 championship had the earliest touchdown in its 11-year history, 48 seconds after kickoff. The previous quickest TD also belonged to OU. Kejuan Jones scored on a 42-yard run against Kansas State in 2003, 2:45 after kickoff. (Tulsa World)Record Big XII Championship crowd: The crowd of 80,031 for Saturday's game at Arrowhead Stadium was the largest for a Big 12 Championship. (NewsOK.com)Kelly sets Big 12 receiving years record: Oklahoma's Malcolm Kelly caught 10 passes for 142 yards, setting a Big 12 championship game record for yards receiving, breaking the mark of 140 yards set by Kansas State's Darnell McDonald in 1998 against Texas A&M. (Kansas City Star)Oklahoma lacks a ground game against Nebraska: Oklahoma came into the game with the third-best rushing offense in the Big 12 and 14th-best in the country, averaging 188.7 yards a game. The Sooners had run for 224 or more yards in four of their past five games, all without Adrian Peterson. But Saturday, the Sooners averaged 1.5 yards per carry and had one run of double-digit yards, an 11-yarder by Allen Patrick. (Star-Telegram)OU booms Huskers for Big 12 title: SoonerSports.com

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesPeterson Close, but highly unlikely: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Adrian Peterson's availability for Saturday's Big 12 championship game was "highly unlikely" but evaded further questions about the running back's health. Asked following Monday's practice if he had an update on Peterson's status, Stoops said, "Uh, no. Not definitive, but right now, highly unlikely. We're not anticipating that." Asked if Peterson had an X-ray or bone scan Monday, Stoops said, "I'm not getting into all of that." Asked if Peterson's participation against Nebraska was still a possibility or had been ruled out, Stoops said, "Next question." (Tulsa World)Bob Stoops named Eddie Robinson finalist Coach of the Year: Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is one of nine finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. The honor is voted on annually by the Football Writers Association of America. Other finalists include Arkansas' Houston Nutt, Rutgers' Greg Schiano, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Houston's Art Briles, Hawaii's June Jones, Michigan's Lloyd Carr, BYU's Bronco Mendenhall and Boise State's Chris Petersen. The finalists will be placed on a ballot which will be sent out to the entire FWAA membership by e-mail. FWAA members will be asked to vote for their top three choices in the order they are deserving. The FWAA Coaching Award is named after Robinson, a coaching legend at Grambling State University for 55 years. He has more Division I victories (408) than any other coach. The winner of the FWAA/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award will be announced and honored at a reception on Jan. 5 in Glendale, Ariz., in conjunction with the BCS 1-2 game. Stoops' Sooners, who won seven straight to nab the Big 12 South Division title, will be playing in the Big 12 title game against Nebraska despite losing their starting quarterback and top running back during the course of the season. (SoonerSports PR)Kelly keeps his cool despite few passes: [Oklahoma, WR., Malcolm] Kelly was a frustrated wide receiver when he met the media two days after the A&M game. However, that was not the case Monday evening when he was asked about the single catch in Stillwater. "During the O-State game one of our coaches came up to me and told me to keep my composure or whatever," Kelly said. "I was like, 'Man, I'm not worried about it. I'm trying to play next Saturday (in the Big 12 championship game).' "However we've got to take it, we're winning games. We're overcoming what everybody thought." (Tulsa World)A lil' Oklahoma history: Cornhuskers quarterback Zac Taylor grew up in Norman, the son of former Sooner defensive back Sherwood Taylor. So he understands the history of OU-Nebraska. "The games I remember more than anything else were the OU-Nebraska games when I was a little kid," Taylor said. "Those are the most vivid memories I have. "Back then, I was an Oklahoma fan cheering against Nebraska. Now it's the other way around." (NewsOK.com)Big XII Championship tickers SOLD-OUT: If you want to go to Saturday's Big 12 championship but don't already have tickets, your best bet might be eBay. Oklahoma sold out its allotment of approximately 8,500 tickets early Monday, just as Nebraska had done several days earlier after the Huskers qualified for the championship by winning the Big 12 North. The Big 12 was allotted approximately 2,000 tickets, leaving in the neighborhood of 60,000 tickets available for the general public. By 4 p.m. Monday, a Ticketmaster representative said the only seats available were in wheelchair sections. (Tulsa World)Sooners conditioning for Big XII Title game: OU offensive line coach James Patton is well aware of the weekend weather predictions. The low temperature is projected to be 21 degrees in Kansas City, which could make for a low scoring, grind-it-out affair. "That is a lineman's night," Patton said. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKelly happy with win: Malcolm Kelly on win against Texas A&M despite one catch: "You play receiver because you want to catch the ball," said Kelly, who a week ago became the fastest Sooner to reach 1,000 career receiving yards. "For me to say that any receiver doesn't get mad if they don't catch a pass, then I'm not telling the truth about that. "We did what we had to do. I'd rather come away with a win. You can catch seven or eight balls a game, but then you're 0-10. That doesn't really do that much good."(NewsOK.com)Sooners Holiday Food Drive: The University of Oklahoma football program will again take an active role in a local holiday food drive. It is the seventh year the team has participated. The main part of that drive comes this Saturday when $1 donations will be accepted from fans prior to the OU-Texas Tech game. The project originated with Josh Heupel while he was quarterback for the Sooners in 2000. He began helping just a few families and then formed the 14 Foundation to support the project each year. The Holiday Food Drive has grown to helping hundreds of families in Norman and now includes the 14 Foundation, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Regional Food Bank and Oklahoma Public Schools. This year, the project has targeted 500 families in seven different communities across Oklahoma. Families have been chosen in Ada, Ardmore, Enid, Lawton, Norman, Moore and Stillwater. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesCotton Bowl reps to be in attendance in College Station: AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic representatives will attend this weekend's Oklahoma-Texas A&M, Missouri-Nebraska and Oklahoma State-Texas games, bowl president Rick Baker said. "These are certainly games we watch a little closer than we would if they were in September or October," Baker said. The OU-A&M and Missouri-Nebraska games are of particular interest. The Aggies (8-1, 4-1 Big 12) and the Sooners (6-2, 3-1) have the second and third best conference records. The Tigers (7-2, 3-2) and Cornhuskers (6-3, 3-2) are tied for first place in the North division. "[Those] are certainly two games that have folks that certainly you'd expect to be on your radar screen at the end of November," Baker said. (Dallas Morning News)Limited Oklahoma-Texas A&M tickets available: From the Texas A&M Athletics Website... As of 4 p.m. Monday, approximately 3,000 tickets still remain for Saturday night's showdown with 18th-ranked Oklahoma. Call 888-99-AGGIE to purchase.Stoops wants to eliminate Big XII North-South format: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops rekindled an old debate Monday by saying he'd be in favor of scrapping the Big 12's divisional format and opting instead for a nine-game conference schedule. Stoops said the Big 12 would then become like the Big Ten and Pacific-10, conferences that do not have a championship game. The Big 12 athletic directors were so against the idea of eliminating the division format that they didn't even vote on a proposal at their league meetings in May. (Dallas Morning News)Lawsuit filed against University of Oklahoma: The University of Oklahoma is being sued by the Dallas Morning News and information advocacy group Freedom Of Information Oklahoma under claims that the school's release of documentation regarding football players' employment at a Norman car dealer had too much information blacked out. In a story published Sunday in the campus newspaper, the Oklahoma Daily, OU cites federal privacy laws that require when "information is provided under the Open Records Act, that 'identifiable student information' not be released." Toni Nguyen, assistant general counsel for Belo Corp., parent company of the Morning News, was quoted by the Oklahoma Daily in an e-mail as saying, "We need access to relevant documents in OU's possession to uncover the truth about the events leading up to the removal of Rhett Bomar and J.D. Quinn from the OU football team. . . . The documents that OU has publicly produced have been so substantially redacted that they're useless to us." (Tulsa World)
Kelly's late decision: OU receiver Malcolm Kelly went through a difficult time last week due to the death of his grandfather, Alphonso Smith. Kelly left Norman Thursday to be with his family in Longview, Texas, and planned to miss the Missouri game to attend the funeral. "I talked to my grandma and she told me how he was looking forward to watching me play in that game," Kelly said. Kelly was OU's leading receiver with four catches for 40 yards, but didn’t do much celebrating afterwards. Sooners get past Tigers: A swarming Oklahoma defense made life difficult on Chase Daniel and No. 23 Missouri, leading to a road win for the Sooners. Paul Thompson threw two touchdown passes, Allen Patrick rushed for 162 yards and No. 19 Oklahoma scored all of its points off Missouri's mistakes in a 26-10 victory Saturday. ''Opportunistic, I guess,'' Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. ''I don't know that this should be a surprise because we've been playing this way for several weeks now.'' The Sooners (6-2, 3-1 Big 12) won for the first time this season away from Norman, Okla., and snapped Missouri's eight-game home winning streak. After a 6-0 start, the Tigers (7-2, 3-2) have lost two of three. (AP/SoonerSports.com)Kelly fastest to 1,000 receiving yards: Passed the 1,000-yard benchmark in career receiving yards in his 19th career game, quicker than any other OU player in history (Antwone Savage, 21). Kelly entered the game with 995 career receiving yards and finished with 1,035. He sits 18th on OU's all-time list in the category, five yards behind Jarrail Jackson. It took Kelly 13 games to reach 500 receiving yards, but just six to double that figure. (Oklahoma Notes) Oklahoma-Texas A&M set for 7:00 Kickoff: ABC announced Saturday night that the Oklahoma at Texas A&M game scheduled for next Saturday, Nov. 4, will kickoff at 7 p.m. The network said last week that it would choose between a morning and evening starting time. It eventually settled on the latter. This will mark the second straight week that OU has appeared on ABC. The Sooners will take a three-game winning streak to College Station, Texas. The most recent of those victories came Saturday at Missouri when OU prevailed over the No. 23 Tigers, 26-10. It was MU's first loss at home this season. (SoonerSports PR)Peterson visits MO. youth team: Injured running back Adrian Peterson visited with a youth football team from St. Charles, Mo., before the game, and the 10- and 11-year-olds were starstruck. As the Sooners stretched, Peterson and running backs coach Cale Gundy walked to the north end zone to greet the Mid River Eagles, who are coached by former Missouri player Derrick Miller. Peterson shook hands and told the kids to stay focused and mind their studies. Gundy extolled Peterson to the Eagles as the Sooners' hardest worker. When he walked away, the Eagles' quarterback smiled and shouted, "Remember the Eagles!" "That was really cool of him to come down here and do that," said Miller. (Tulsa World)Stoops pleased despite fumble: Coach Bob Stoops had high praise for his offense on a drive that resulted in no points. After Lendy Holmes smothered a pass on fourth-and-goal, OU took over at the 1 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. The Sooners drove 68 yards in 10 plays and ate 4:43 off the clock. The drive ended when Thompson fumbled at the OU 42. "I was pumping them up on the sideline," Stoops said. "That's a heck of a drive and a big part of the game." (Dallas Morning News)This one is for him: A memorable moment for the Sooners came with 5:02 left in the third quarter Saturday, when Quentin Chaney caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. "I ran the route, saw the ball coming, caught it and just made sure I stayed low," said Chaney, the sophomore from Booker T. Washington. "I felt a man on my back and pushed and got in that end zone." After the catch, Chaney found Malcolm Kelly, the receiver he replaced on the play. "The touchdown, I dedicated it to Malcolm," Chaney said. "His grandfather passed away earlier this week. He's kind of having a rough time. (Tulsa World)Where's the Mizzou fans? Saturday's paid attendance was announced at 62,045. Despite the hype produced the weekend's only game between two teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25, the crowd still fell short of Faurot Field's 68,349 capacity. Nearly 1,600 more fans showed up last week when Missouri hosted Kansas State in the rain. (NewsOK.com)Sooners finally turn in all the big plays: Norman Transcript

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes
Peterson says, "We've just got to see" if its the final OU-Texas: Three years ago, Adrian Peterson said he signed with Oklahoma rather than Texas because the Sooners had a better opportunity to win national championships. On Saturday, he exited the Cotton Bowl with 109 yards rushing and a touchdown, but with his second straight loss to the Longhorns. "I was pumped up, ready to play Texas," said Peterson, moments after getting some consoling words from Longhorns coach Mack Brown. "Any year, anybody would be ready to play this game." If Peterson, a junior, decides to enter the NFL draft after this season, he'll look back at Saturday as the defeat that guaranteed his leaving Oklahoma without a national title. If he goes pro, he'll also conclude his OU career with a 1-2 record against Texas. "We've just got to see, man," he said. "We've got a long season to go." (Dallas Morning News) Sooners' D-Line overmatched by Texas' OL? One perceived mismatch entering the game was Texas' offensive line over OU's defensive line. The perception held true early as the Longhorns compiled nearly half (56) of their 127 total rushing yards in the first quarter. Defensive end Larry Birdine says the Sooners weren't caught off guard by much of what Texas did on the offensive line. "Their running backs were able to make plays and their linemen were staying on blocks." (NewsOK.com)Peterson praises UT's kick coverage: Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson praised the directional kickoffs of Texas' Greg Johnson. After Texas' first touchdown, Peterson returned the kickoff a career-long 59 yards, although an OU penalty negated 15 yards of it. But on his ensuing three returns, Peterson totaled 35 yards. "Every time I caught it, they were almost there in my face," he said. (Dallas Morning News)Kelly disappointed with execution: OU receiver Malcolm Kelly was frustrated, but not by the fact that Texas limited him to two receptions for 31 yards. "Our execution was poor," he said. "I'm disappointed because no one really knows our potential like I feel our team does, and we definitely didn't show it." (Star-Telegram)Lack of pressure costly to Sooners defensive: OU defensive end C.J. Ah You had a team-high eight tackles against UT, and Calvin Thibodeaux had three tackles for loss. But defensive end Larry Birdine said the line didn't put enough pressure on quarterback Colt McCoy, and when OU blitzed, the secondary became vulnerable. "I'm very disappointed, especially since I was a non-factor in the second half," said Birdine, who had only one tackle. (Dallas Morning News)
