Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKeith Nichol transferring to Michigan State: Keith Nichol is going home. The former Oklahoma quarterback announced Tuesday that he is transferring to Michigan State, an hour's drive away from where he attended high school. "It feels really good; to be able to have my family and friends come to my games is going to be nice," Nichol said. "Coming back home is a dream come true." After sitting out next season, Nichol will have three years of eligibility remaining at Michigan State. In 2009, senior starter Brian Hoyer will be gone, leaving Nichol to battle a pair of redshirt freshmen in Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles to be the Spartans' starting quarterback. "We're excited about the future," said Gary Nichol, Keith's father. "And when the dust settles, we'll have nothing but good memories about OU." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesNichol undecided on transfer school: [Keith] Nichol, a former Lowell star, MSU verbal commitment and Oklahoma quarterback, is still considering a number of schools less than two weeks after deciding to transfer from Oklahoma. His father, Gary Nichol, said Monday that the list consists of MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Louisville, Cincinnati, Arizona State and New Mexico State.Keith's intent, Gary said, is to make a decision and enroll in time to fully take part in summer workouts. Every team's schedule is different, but in MSU's case, the timetable is less than two weeks."Wherever he ends up, he's gonna land on his feet," Gary Nichol said of his son, "and he's gonna have fun playing football again." Nichol and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops split amicably on May 9 with "a hug and a handshake" and a Stoops offer to leave the door open if Keith decided to come back, Gary said. "A decision definitely hasn't been made yet," Gary Nichol said Monday. (Lansing State Journal)Eric Bassey Excited for Move: ST. Louis Rams.comLabels: Keith Nichol, Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesBackup QB Keith Nichol to transfer after all: Keith Nichol's career at Oklahoma is over. Nichol, the former all-state quarterback at Lowell High School, announced Friday morning that he has left the University of Oklahoma after just one year. He completed his final exams this week and drove back to West Michigan on Friday. Nichol, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound signal caller, played in three games with the Sooners. He rushed for eight yards and completed his only pass in his debut against North Texas. He also saw action against Utah State and Tulsa. He finished his freshman season having completed 2 of 7 passes for a total of 15 yards. He rushed for 13 yards on three carries. "It was a really tough decision," Nichol said Friday morning. "I love OU and the people there, but you can't stay there for the people. I had to leave there for me. I look at it as a missed opportunity, but not everything works out the way you plan. "This has been on my mind for a while. When it came down to it, I couldn't go to practice if I was thinking about transferring. I had to make a decision and go with it." If he transfers to another Division I school, Nichol will have to sit out the 2008 season. He could practice with a team next season but would not be eligible to play Division I football until the 2009 season. He said Friday that he plans to take a long look at all of his options. "I am looking to transfer to a school with a good situation, one that fits my style. I am going to look for the best opportunity," Nichol said. "Maybe I cheated myself in the recruiting process the first time. "I didn't look at all of my options completely," he said. "Now I am trying to look at everything. Having been involved in big-time college football for a while now, I understand things better." Nichol, who was a marketing major at Oklahoma, was waiting until exams were finished and he returned home before contacting other college football programs. (Grand Rapids Press)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesThe Oklahoman's Q&A with backup QB Keith Nichol: More at The Oklahoman Q: In the two scrimmages last year, you showed you have a lot of ability. People have said, with that kind of ability, why has Keith stayed? Make the case for why you've decided to stay here, why it's important to you and what you hope to achieve during your time here. A: I'm still doing the same thing I did the first day I got on campus and that's compete for a starting spot. I'm not backing down and would never back down just because someone had a good year. A lot can change in college football. A lot of people ask me that same question, why aren't you going somewhere? I love OU, I love the people here. Worst-case scenario, you get a free education. It's really not a bad deal. I'm staying for a lot of reasons. I love these guys here. I'm glad Sam played so well last year and the team did so well. It's a selfish standpoint to get disappointed — I'm real proud of the team and Sam. If I had to transfer I'd still have to compete for a starting spot. So, I'm not going to sit here and compete for a second spot. I'm here to compete for the top. McCoy out against Utah State: Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy didn't start for the first time this season and didn't get into the game. Backup Steven Coleman, a senior from Skyline, started in McCoy's place. McCoy broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand against Miami last week and has been wearing a cast ever since. McCoy said earlier this week that the cast slows him down.(Dallas Morning News)Hartley career long: Garrett Hartley banged home a 53-yard field goal Saturday, a yard longer than his previous career best against Texas in 2005. "It came off my foot really well, with a little right-to-left draw," he said. "I couldn't tell how much I had to spare. It was good enough from 53, I know that." (Tulsa World)Nichol #2 QB: True freshman Keith Nichol, who had been the Sooners' No. 3 quarterback in the previous two games, entered as the second-string signal caller Saturday. Nichol was 1-of-6 passing for 10 yards. He turned the ball over on a fumbled snap, but also threw a well-placed deep pass that Garrett Bothun could not pull in near the goal line. Joey Halzle also entered the game late, completing his only pass. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKeith Nichol not expected to transfer; Has Bradford's backing: With the announcement Tuesday that Sam Bradford will be Oklahoma's starting quarterback, it's fair to assume that freshman Keith Nichol could be questioning his future. Or not. Nichol's father, Gary, told The Oklahoman on Tuesday that Keith "loves OU and is not going to transfer.” And OU head coach Bob Stoops said Nichol is "probably not” going to redshirt this season. Nichol, a native of Lowell, Mich., is still entrenched in a quarterback battle, but now it's for the backup job as he and junior Joey Halzle are splitting snaps equally with the second-team offense in practice now. Losing out on the starting job wasn't easy to take for Nichol, who told his parents the news Monday night. "When an 18-year-old has spent over half of his life working toward a single goal and it doesn't come true, that's not your best day,” his father said. (NewsOK.com)Sooners select captains: Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that Sooner players have selected five captains for the 2007 season. The honor went to Joe Jon Finley, Allen Patrick, Lewis Baker, Marcus Walker and Jacob Gutierrez. Finley, a tight end, and Patrick, a running back, will represent the offense. Baker, a linebacker, and Walker, a cornerback, will represent the defense, while Gutierrez, a running back, represents the special teams. All five are seniors. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes OU's Quarterback role remains unfilled: Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Sunday will be the first opportunity since preseason practice started for the Sooners' coaching staff to discuss the quarterback situation at length. He hinted it's possible that the final decision on a starter might not be made until after the season starts. Oklahoma will open on Sept. 1 at home against North Texas and will host Miami a week later. "I wish it would be settled and done right this second, personally, for all positions," Wilson said. "But at the same time, we're going to need more than one....Maybe we go with two. "We're through the first (week) and through a scrimmage. Maybe, from what we've seen in practice and today, maybe we can get close to making that call...or (decide that) we're five, six, eight, 10 days away." (Dallas Morning News) Players out due to injuries: Notables that did not play due to injury included OT Branndon Braxton, CB Reggie Smith and RB Allen Patrick. Patrick is out with a sprained ankle. Stoops said Braxton and Smith have minor ailments and should be back soon. (SoonerSports.com) Bob Stoops post-scrimmage quotes: "It was good overall. Defensively we're just so much more stable in the secondary. You have the potential there for giving up plays or making plays. Defensively, we were solid." "It's obvious that our quarterbacks can make all the throws. They did a really nice job. I didn't see any forced decisions. The drives that stalled didn't stop because of their play. The players around them have to make plays." "On offense, I was pleased for the most part. Our defense sees that offense every day so the offense is at a significant disadvantage." All three quarterbacks see snaps in practice #2: The stadium portion of the practice was highlighted by the team drill featuring the offense against the defense. That session lasted approximately 40 minutes. All three quarterbacks vying for the starting job -- Joey Halzle, Sam Bradford and Keith Nichol -- got snaps. "We're still giving those guys a lot to think through and they're playing against a good defense, but they're handling it well and making good progress," Stoops said. "This is a learning time for them, especially in the first few practices." The Sooners will don pads for the first time this spring when they practice Saturday. (SoonerSports.com)

Oklahoma Sooners Football Articles and Notes
Stoops not expected to name starter at QB anytime soon: Oklahoma fans can forget an answer as to who the next Sooners quarterback is until next season's opening game approaches, coach Bob Stoops said. "This is not do-or-die for anybody," Stoops said of the spring workouts that begin today. "Everybody wants to have the answer [immediately], but we hope [the three candidates] will work together to make each other better, and make it a stronger position." Expectations center on freshman Keith Nichol, a standout from the state of Michigan who, because of a coaching change at Michigan State, signed with the Sooners and enrolled for the spring semester. But Stoops won't anoint anyone until he gets a thorough look at Nichol, seldom-used transfer Joey Halzle and redshirt freshman Sam Bradford, who caught the attention of coaches in the fall while running the scout team, in spring practices and on into August drills. "Keith comes in with a lot of promise," Stoops said. "He's shown to be a great worker and a tough kid who the players enjoy being around." (Star-Telegram)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Nebraska sees no difference in Sooners without Peterson: Nebraska linebacker Corey McKeon said he hasn't noticed a drop-off in OU's running game without Adrian Peterson. "It's Oklahoma, and you know they'll have good running backs," McKeon said. "Adrian Peterson casts a very large shadow... You could be the second-best running back in the nation and be playing behind Adrian Peterson." McKeon wasn't sure of Peterson's replacement's name, just the number. But he saw a similarity. "No. 23 (Allen Patrick), he looks just like Adrian running hard out there," McKeon said. "He's a downhill guy and he's going to be tough to play against." (NewsOK.com) Michigan prep QB eyeing Oklahoma? Keith Nichol, the Lowell (Mich.) High School senior rated among the top five prep quarterbacks in the nation, visited OU Wednesday, even through he verbally committed to Michigan State over a year ago. "I am just going out there to reassure myself of my decision," Nichol told the Grand Rapids Press before leaving. "With all the stuff that has been going on, I want to make sure I am where I want to be." Nichol committed to John L. Smith, the Michigan State coach who was fired this season. The Spartans hired Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio to replace Smith this week, and Nichol said he plans to visit Dantonio after his trip to OU. "He is a 17-year-old boy, and we want to make sure we are getting all the information before him that he needs," Gary Nichol, Keith's father, told the Press. "Once he has that information, he will be ready to make a decision." (Tulsa World)
Current Sooners met at Nebraska: Oklahoma defensive backs Nic Harris and Reggie Smith were friends before they became teammates. The sophomores met during the recruiting process.
