Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesSam Bradford named to Maxwell watch list: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award. The honor is presented annually to the top player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia. Bradford, a redshirt freshman, leads the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 181.15. He has completed 128-of-181 passes for 1,689 yards and 20 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His 20 touchdown passes are tied for the sixth-best total in school history. Bradford's position coach, Josh Heupel, also threw 20 in the 2000 national championship season. The school record of 40 was set by Jason White in 2003. Bradford has multiple TD passes in six games, including five in the season opener. That effort tied White's school record. He has completed at least 65% in six games, has no interceptions in four games and has at least one 30-yard pass in every game. Oklahoma players have won the Maxwell Award twice. Tommy McDonald captured the honor in 1956 and White followed in 2004. (SoonerSports PR)Iglesias career milestone: With seven catches against the Tigers, junior WR Juaquin Iglesias has 102 for his career. He becomes the 12th Sooner with more than 100 career catches all-time and the eighth under Bob Stoops. Hold that phone: Bob Stoops couldn't help but interrupt his weekly teleconference with beat writers Sunday afternoon. He was watching Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings beat Chicago. "You guys watching Adrian tear it up?" Stoops said. "He just ripped off about a 30-yard run . . . I take that back. It was about a 50-yarder."(Tulsa World)OU-Iowa State kickoff set for 11:30 FSN: Oklahoma's football game at Iowa State this Saturday will kickoff at 11:30 a.m., and will be televised by Fox Sports Net. ESPN College GameDay Live! from Norman: ESPN College GameDay is headed for Norman again. Officials with the weekly college football show contacted the Oklahoma Athletics Department Sunday morning with the word that the network had selected this week's homecoming game with the Missouri Tigers. It will be the 14th time the show has been on hand for an Oklahoma game, including last year's game at Texas A&M. GameDay's last visit to Norman was for the 2003 Oklahoma State game. Other trips to Norman included the 2000 Nebraska game, the 2001 Kansas State game and the 1995 Colorado game. The exact location for the GameDay set will be determined later this week. GameDay features host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, who spend two hours each Saturday morning providing in-depth coverage of college football. Play of the Game? With the score tied 14-14 at halftime, Texas came out firing to start the second half. The Longhorns marched 64 yards in seven plays to set up first-and-goal from the Oklahoma 8. A delay of game penalty pushed the ball back to the 13. Texas running back Jamaal Charles rushed over left tackle and was headed toward the end zone when OU linebacker Curtis Lofton grabbed him from behind and used his right hand to slap the football from Charles' grasp. Stoops called it the "play of the game." OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy recovered the fumble at the OU 4-yard line. (Dallas Morning News)
Gerald McCoy returned to starting lineup: Oklahoma redshirt freshman Gerald McCoy returned to the starting lineup at defensive tackle for the first time since the second week of the season. Cast allows McCoy to play despite broken hand: Despite breaking a bone in his right hand, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been practicing and playing thanks to a cast he only wears on the field. In games, McCoy can't grab with his right hand, but he can move his wrist thanks to adjustments made to the cast. He can also take the cast off before and after practice. During the day, he tapes his middle and ring finger together to support the broken fourth metacarpal bone he suffered against Miami. After missing the Utah State game, McCoy returned against Tulsa and made his first and only tackle of the season. Updated: OU wants secondary violation dropped: As previously posted; After consulting with a fellow Big 12 Conference school, Oklahoma wants the NCAA to strike a self-reported secondary rules violation from its record. Oklahoma reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. The university's executive director of compliance, Jason Leonard, subsequently sent a letter to the NCAA asking to have that violation removed, according to documents obtained Friday through an open records request by The Associated Press. Leonard wrote that Oklahoma heard from compliance staff at Missouri after they'd read an AP story published June 12 detailing secondary violations that had been self-reported by Oklahoma. Leonard wrote that he was informed that Missouri – in a similar situation – had been told by a former NCAA official in 2005 that no secondary violation had occurred in that instance. (AP/Dallas Morning News) (8-11-07) Update 2: University of Oklahoma secondary violations removed: The Oklahoma football program had a self-reported secondary NCAA violation removed from its record, according to documents obtained Tuesday by The Oklahoman. Oklahoma originally reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. In a letter dated July 18, NCAA Associate Director for Enforcement of Secondary Violations, Renee Gomila, wrote that "based upon additional information (OU) submitted, it was confirmed by membership services that under the specific facts of this case, no violation of NCAA legislation occurred inasmuch as personalized numbers and names were not placed on the jerseys displayed during the prospects' visits.” (NewsOK.com) McCoy suffers broken hand; unlikely to start against Utah State: Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy broke a bone in his right hand on Saturday against Miami but was able to practice Monday with a cast protecting the injury. He said the injury occurred during the Sooners goal-line stand that ultimately ended with a Hurricanes touchdown. McCoy said having a cast over four fingers does hinder his effectiveness, but doesn't actually hurt. "I'm working to get better every day so it won't slow me down," he said. (Tulsa World) Updated: OU's Patrick suffered cramps: Oklahoma RB Allen Patrick did not play after two carries in the third quarter, but did not reinjure his right ankle, instead suffering leg cramps. (Star-Telegram)(9-9-07) Update 1: Patrick expected to play Saturday: Coach Bob Stoops said senior running back Allen Patrick has worked at full speed this week in practice and is expected to play Saturday. (Dallas Morning News) Limited OU-Utah State tickets available: The University of Oklahoma has received a limited number of tickets from Utah State, this week's opponent, and has those tickets on sale now. Jerseys to include names in '07? Oklahoma played last season without players' names on the backs of their jerseys, but Saturday, the Sooners' jerseys included their names. Stoops said he would probably keep them that way in the fall, too. "Right now, the players wanted to," he said. "I asked them ... can they remain unselfish about it and not worry about whose name's on the back and more about who's on the front?" They assured the coach that they could. "If they'll continue to act that way," Stoops said, "maybe we'll keep 'em that way." (NewsOK.com)
Murray still getting used to the cameras: After Oklahoma's Red/White spring game Saturday at Owen Field, DeMarco Murray was the media darling. I haven't had this many interviews since my senior year in high school." (Norman Transcript)

Walk-on Whitson makes a impact: [Carter] Whitson, a walk-on who played high school ball for his dad, Brent, at Broken Arrow and Shawnee, did more than enough to atone for the missed block. He was OU's third-leading receiver Saturday with two catches for 45 yards. (Tulsa World)
McCoy Practice Injury: Nose guard Gerald McCoy was a late scratch for the Red-White game. The ballyhooed redshirt freshman has been practicing with pain in his calf muscle, but when he jumped over a lineman Thursday, he landed wrong on his leg. "My calf muscle kind of stretched out a little bit, strained it a little bit," McCoy said. "They said they were going to see what happened this morning. Then they said they were going to hold me out, just let me rest a little bit." (NewsOK.com)

A good spring break to everyone!
Highly touted McCoy impressses during scrimmage: Gerald McCoy, the 2005 USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year at Oklahoma City Southeast, started Wednesday's scrimmage at defensive tackle. He made five tackles and was an occasional presence in the opposing offense's backfield. It was a sign of the growth the Sooners had in mind when they decided to redshirt McCoy last fall. "Gerald's doing really well," coach Bob Stoops said. "He's jumping the ball well and continues to make really good improvement. We're happy with him." (Tulsa World)
Bobby Jack Wright would like to alternate corners: [Reggie] Smith and Marcus Walker are slotted as the starters this spring, with Lendy Holmes and once-ostracized D.J. Wolfe in backup roles. Among them, only Smith has started fewer than 11 games at cornerback during his career. "Our plan will be now, during the course of a ballgame, will be able to alternate by every two or three series," said OU secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright. "Then you've always got fresh corners out there. And good corners. "It's not like there's nobody over there anymore." (NewsOK.com)

Peterson to NFL after junior year "is common sense," Wilson, says: Most observers assume Adrian Peterson's departure to the NFL is a foregone conclusion after his junior season. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson even figured as much on Tuesday while assessing quarterback recruiting. Asked to elaborate on Peterson, he said the running back's declaration for the NFL after this season is "common sense. "He'd be surrounded by a great college team coming back," Wilson said. "But the money that's being thrown out there, if he continues to play -- I'm sure coach (Bob Stoops) will get with him and the NFL people to see what his true stock value is, and if it's in the high end, I don't know any of us that will say, 'You should come back and not go be one of the top three or four guys picked.' "If you're going that high, you look at this year, those guys are getting 60 million bucks out the gate. It's hard to come back and go to study hall. Nothing against study hall." (Tulsa World)
Sooners ready to chase ISU's Meyer: OU defensive end Larry Birdine said he's tired of chasing guys and would prefer a drop-back passer. He asked: "Where's all the Drew Bledsoes at?" (Dallas Morning News)
No decision yet on McCoy redshirt: Gerald McCoy is becoming a better football player. Oklahoma coaches have said so. His teammates have said so. That doesn't mean McCoy, the Sooners' true freshman defensive tackle from Southeast High School, will play this season. Nor does it mean he won't. It simply means he's getting better, and his mother said McCoy is OK with that. "He's handling it well," Pat McCoy said of her son. "He feels like maybe it's for his betterment to learn and sit back and be an apprentice." Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday no final determination has been made as to whether McCoy will redshirt. (NewsOK.com)
