Sooners Granted Eligibility For Draft

Bradford, Franks, Gresham and McCoy granted eligibility for NFL Draft: Four Oklahoma underclassmen have been granted special eligibility for the 2010 NFL Draft. The NFL released the names of 53 college players who meet the league's three-year eligibility rule and who have submitted written applications to renounce their remaining college eligibility. Among them are four Oklahoma players and none are surprises -- quarterback Sam Bradford, tight end Jermaine Gresham, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and defensive back Dominique Franks. (KTUL)

Gerald McCoy to Enter NFL Draft

Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy announced today that he will forgo his senior year of football eligibility to enter the NFL Draft.

A two-time All-American and a consensus pick in 2009, McCoy will participate in graduation ceremonies tonight, then complete his degree in Human Relations with online courses this spring.

"I made the decision around mid-season when I knew that I would have enough credits to graduate," McCoy said. "Graduation was my main goal and once I knew I had that accomplished, I wanted to look at playing in the NFL.

"I loved my experience at OU and I'm going to miss it. I accomplished almost everything I wanted to get done here and it's been very positive with my teammates, the coaches, the fans, everyone."

OU Head Coach Bob Stoops praised McCoy and endorsed his decision to enter the draft.

"Gerald is a great example of how to be a student-athlete," said Stoops. "He came here, took care of his academic responsibilities, invested himself in the lives of others and had a great career on the field. I've never been associated with a young man who was any more impressive than Gerald.

"He is extremely mature, and that fact, along with what he has done academically, makes this decision to enter the draft a good one for him."

The announcement comes before McCoy's final game in a Sooner uniform, the 2009 Brut Sun Bowl versus Stanford on Dec. 31. He insists there are no distractions leading into that contest.

"I'm not worried about any of that right now," McCoy said. "We have a big game to win and for now I am a Sooner."

McCoy, from Oklahoma City, was USA Today's National Defensive Player of the Year after his senior season at Southeast High School. He then redshirted during his freshman season at OU, 2006.

He was Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the year and a freshman All-American by numerous outlets in 2007, while helping the Sooners to the Big 12 championship. He spearheaded another Big 12 championship in 2008 when he was cited as a first-team All-American by The Sporting News.

To date, McCoy has 80 career tackles, including 13.5 sacks and 32 tackles for loss. He also registered two fumbles caused, one fumble recovery, one interception and four pass deflections.

With 39 consecutive starts he has established a school record for defensive tackles.

McCoy's impact off the field matched what he accomplished in uniform. A frequent public speaker, he has participated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the United Way and Meals on Wheels among others, while also speaking out against violence towards women and appearing in juvenile centers, with children's groups, elementary schools and area hospitals.

"You never know who needs to hear something from you that day; who needs some encouragement," McCoy said. "When you are a football player at Oklahoma, some people automatically look up to you. I always felt like it was my duty to do all of those things. God called me to that service."

McCoy hopes to do even more. His mother, Patricia, died before her son began his college career. It had been her dream to open a facility in Oklahoma City to receive those who had been evicted and needed a home.

"I want to help get one of those built in her name," he said. "I also want to be involved with a community center for kids. Children will be my main focus."

McCoy said that he will hire an agent after the bowl game and then begin training in earnest for the NFL Combine.(SoonerSports PR)

Offensive tackle Trent Williams, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, linebacker Travis Lewis and cornerback Dominique Franks all made the first team. Bradford, McCoy Among Team Captains Chosen

Team captains chosen for 2009 season: Oklahoma announced its team captains today for the 2009 football season. The captains were selected in a vote by the team. The four players accumulating the most votes were quarterback Sam Bradford, tight end Brody Eldridge, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and linebacker Ryan Reynolds. According to head coach Bob Stoops, enough other players received considerable votes that another captain roles will rotate among a group comprised of defensive end Jeremy Beal, running back Chris Brown, fullback Matt Clapp, linebacker Keenan Clayton, Auston English, Jermaine Gresham and Trent Williams. "I appreciate the four who received the most votes and they will represent the team well," Stoops said, "but I also think it says a lot about our program that so many other players were mentioned on the ballots. We have a large pool of players who fit the role of captain and that tells me that we have a healthy and cohesive locker room." (SoonerSports PR)

Sooners Second Scrimmage Likely Indoors

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Clayton and McCoy suffer minor injuries: Strongside linebacker Keenan Clayton is currently out of action with a high ankle sprain. He said the plan was to be able to return by the April 11 Red/White Game, but acknowledged there was caution in hurrying back too soon and suffering a setback. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is practicing with a bandage covering six stitches over his right eye, the result of an after-dark jaunt from his house to his truck -- having just stepped out of the shower, with feet wet and a towel around his waist. "Foolish me, I wasn't thinking, 'Your feet are still wet,' " he said. (Tulsa World) ALSO: Jameel Owens returned to practice Wednesday after missing the first two weeks of the spring with a sprained ankle.

Sooners likely back indoors: Before the break, the Sooners had to move their first scheduled scrimmage indoors and scale back the contact, due to weather. Saturday, the same thing may happen to OU's second scheduled scrimmage, as inclement weather is expected to hit the state this weekend. "If it's too bad to be outside, we may have to go indoors and simulate a scrimmage again," said Stoops, whose team practiced Wednesday for the first time since returning from spring break. The NCAA officially recognizes the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America teams in determining consensus (listed by at least half) and unanimous (listed by all) selections. McCoy a Wooden finalist

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Gerald McCoy named a semifinalist for the Wooden Cup: Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been named one of 16 semifinalists for the 2009 Wooden Cup. He is the fourth OU student-athlete to be considered for the award over the last four years. Sooner track and field and cross country runner Jackie Dubois won the Wooden Cup in 2005, the same year that OU football running back Jacob Gutierrez was a finalist. Then, football defensive end Carl Pendleton was a finalist in 2006. The announcement on the finalists was made by Fred Northup, President, Athletes for a Better World. The Wooden Cup is given to a collegiate and a professional athlete who have made the greatest positive influence in the lives of others. The award recipients will be announced at a ceremony held at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club on Wednesday, January 14. (SoonerSports PR)

College GameDay to Broadcast Live! from Cotton Bowl

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

ESPN College GameDay at Cotton Bowl: ESPN's College GameDay will be at the OU-Texas football game this week at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The show starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, two hours before kickoff between OU and Texas. The Sooners' game against the Longhorns will be televised on ABC HD. College GameDay will be on ESPN HD. GameDay is hosted by Chris Fowler, with analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard. According to a press release from ESPN, the first hour of the show will originate from outside the Cotton Bowl. The second hour will originate from the field inside the stadium. (Tulsa World)

Injury update; Granger, McCoy expected to play: After practice on Monday, coach Bob Stoops raised the hopes of Sooner fans everywhere. "Everyone practiced to some degree today," Stoops said. "And right now our trainers are pretty optimistic and feel that everyone will be ready to play. Now, I'm not going to detail it all week on who is where, what percentage — I don't know how to do any of that. It's their feeling today that everyone's expected to play. If I know at one point that someone isn't going to play, then I'll say so." The question marks surrounded a pair of captains in defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and center Jon Cooper, and defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger, a former starter who hasn't played since a foot injury at Washington. Cooper and McCoy injuries appear minor

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Cooper and McCoy update: Oklahoma hopes to have defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and center Jon Cooper healthy for Saturday's showdown with Texas, after the two were hurt (McCoy injured his toe and Cooper sprained his knee) at Baylor over the weekend. Asked Sunday if McCoy was all right, OU coach Bob Stoops said: "We'll see. I believe so, but I've yet to get a report from our trainer." Asked about Cooper, OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said: "I talked to Scott (Anderson, the Sooners' head athletics trainer) and I think he's going to be pretty good... I expect Jon to go. I don't think it's a big deal, but we'll sense more tomorrow and see how it is." (Tulsa World)

Reynolds' perfect game: Middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds made a season high 14 tackles against Baylor, including two for losses. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said it was about as good a game as one of his linebackers has ever played. "He graded out at 100 percent. I don't know that I've ever had that before," he said of Reynold's performance. "I tried to be very nit-picky and he graded out at 100 percent. He does a lot out there. I thought after the game that he played very well and it only confirmed watching the video." (Norman Transcript)

OU vs. Baylor: Post Game Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

10 shy of 30,000: 10 points were needed for OU to become the first school in college football history to score 30,000. By total points, OU is the highest-scoring program in college football history with 29,990. (The Oklahoman)

Iglesias No. 2 all-time: Juaquin Iglesias caught six passes for 133 yards to move into second place on OU's all-time receiving yardage list. He has 2,112 yards, three more than Antwone Savage. Mark Clayton is OU's all-time leader with 3,241 yards. (Tulsa World)

Johnson surprised Sooners scored only 49 points: The way Manny Johnson saw it, the Sooners came up short in one category against Baylor. Points. "We only scored 49 points," Johnson said. "After getting 28 in the first quarter, you'd have thought that we'd get more than that." (The Oklahoman)

McCoy, Cooper, Murray injured: Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy hobbled off the field in the second half after twisting his ankle. But after a brief evaluation by trainers, he was back on his feet walking the sidelines. He never took his shoe off nor left the bench. "I'm good, I'm good," McCoy said. Center Jon Cooper left the game with a sprained knee, but said he too will be ready for Texas. Running back DeMarco Murray had an ice pack on his right knee after the game, but appeared to be walking without a limp. "We have some nicks," coach Bob Stoops said. "But I don't think there's anything too serious." (The Oklahoman)

McCoy Honored

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

McCoy named to Good Works Team: Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. It marks the third consecutive year that an Oklahoma player has been named to the prestigious squad. Jacob Gutierrez was on the team in 2006 and Nic Harris received the honor in 2007. "We're proud of the players who have represented us on the Good Works Team, and certainly Gerald is extremely deserving," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "The fact that he was voted a captain as a sophomore speaks to the respect Gerald has earned in our program. Others have noticed Gerald's selfless actions and integrity, and we are pleased that he also is receiving that recognition on the national level." McCoy is currently serving as President of OU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In that position, he has made a number of speaking appearances at area elementary schools, a facility for underprivileged children and area high schools. (SoonerSports.com)

Bradford Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sam Bradford named to Maxwell watch list: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award. The honor is presented annually to the top player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia. Bradford, a redshirt freshman, leads the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 181.15. He has completed 128-of-181 passes for 1,689 yards and 20 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His 20 touchdown passes are tied for the sixth-best total in school history. Bradford's position coach, Josh Heupel, also threw 20 in the 2000 national championship season. The school record of 40 was set by Jason White in 2003. Bradford has multiple TD passes in six games, including five in the season opener. That effort tied White's school record. He has completed at least 65% in six games, has no interceptions in four games and has at least one 30-yard pass in every game. Oklahoma players have won the Maxwell Award twice. Tommy McDonald captured the honor in 1956 and White followed in 2004. (SoonerSports PR)

Iglesias career milestone: With seven catches against the Tigers, junior WR Juaquin Iglesias has 102 for his career. He becomes the 12th Sooner with more than 100 career catches all-time and the eighth under Bob Stoops.

Hold that phone: Bob Stoops couldn't help but interrupt his weekly teleconference with beat writers Sunday afternoon. He was watching Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings beat Chicago. "You guys watching Adrian tear it up?" Stoops said. "He just ripped off about a 30-yard run . . . I take that back. It was about a 50-yarder."(Tulsa World)

OU-Iowa State kickoff set for 11:30 FSN: Oklahoma's football game at Iowa State this Saturday will kickoff at 11:30 a.m., and will be televised by Fox Sports Net. The network made the announcement Sunday afternoon. The No. 4-ranked Sooners will be playing at Ames, Iowa, for the first time since 2003. The homestanding Cyclones, 1-6, 0-3, will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Last season, Oklahoma turned back Iowa State in Norman, 34-9. (SoonerSports PR)

ESPN College GameDay Live from Norman; OU-Texas Post Game Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

ESPN College GameDay Live! from Norman: ESPN College GameDay is headed for Norman again. Officials with the weekly college football show contacted the Oklahoma Athletics Department Sunday morning with the word that the network had selected this week's homecoming game with the Missouri Tigers. It will be the 14th time the show has been on hand for an Oklahoma game, including last year's game at Texas A&M. GameDay's last visit to Norman was for the 2003 Oklahoma State game. Other trips to Norman included the 2000 Nebraska game, the 2001 Kansas State game and the 1995 Colorado game. The exact location for the GameDay set will be determined later this week. GameDay features host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, who spend two hours each Saturday morning providing in-depth coverage of college football. (SoonerSports PR)

Brown returned with eight carries: Chris Brown, who took a blow to the head at Tulsa and carried just once at Colorado last week, rejoined OU's tailback rotation. He carried eight times for just 24 yards, but converted on third-and-short during two touchdown drives. (
Tulsa World)

Peterson on the OU sideline: Former OU star running back Adrian Peterson cheered the Sooners from the sidelines Saturday. His new team, the Minnesota Vikings, is off this week. "It felt like he was still one of us," junior wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias said. "After every play, he was hitting you and saying congratulations. He was one of those great players, and I still feel like he's part of this team." (
Dallas Morning News)

Harris celebrates 21st birthday with eight tackles: Oklahoma free safety Nic Harris couldn't have envisioned a much better 21st birthday. The Alexandria, La., native turned 21 Saturday and celebrated with the first victory over Texas in his three seasons at OU. Harris had a team-high eight tackles and one quarterback sack. (
NewsOK.com)

Play of the Game? With the score tied 14-14 at halftime, Texas came out firing to start the second half. The Longhorns marched 64 yards in seven plays to set up first-and-goal from the Oklahoma 8. A delay of game penalty pushed the ball back to the 13. Texas running back Jamaal Charles rushed over left tackle and was headed toward the end zone when OU linebacker Curtis Lofton grabbed him from behind and used his right hand to slap the football from Charles' grasp. Stoops called it the "play of the game." OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy recovered the fumble at the OU 4-yard line. (
Dallas Morning News)

Gerald McCoy returned to starting lineup: Oklahoma redshirt freshman Gerald McCoy returned to the starting lineup at defensive tackle for the first time since the second week of the season. McCoy broke a bone in his right hand against Miami and sat out the following week. McCoy has played the last two games as a backup, with his hand in a cast. (

McCoy Able to Play With Special Cast

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Cast allows McCoy to play despite broken hand:
Despite breaking a bone in his right hand, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been practicing and playing thanks to a cast he only wears on the field. In games, McCoy can't grab with his right hand, but he can move his wrist thanks to adjustments made to the cast. He can also take the cast off before and after practice. During the day, he tapes his middle and ring finger together to support the broken fourth metacarpal bone he suffered against Miami. After missing the Utah State game, McCoy returned against Tulsa and made his first and only tackle of the season. (NewsOK.com)

McCoy Held Out Against Utah State; Nichol #2 QB

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

McCoy out against Utah State:
Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy didn't start for the first time this season and didn't get into the game. Backup Steven Coleman, a senior from Skyline, started in McCoy's place. McCoy broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand against Miami last week and has been wearing a cast ever since. McCoy said earlier this week that the cast slows him down.(

Hartley career long: Garrett Hartley banged home a 53-yard field goal Saturday, a yard longer than his previous career best against Texas in 2005. "It came off my foot really well, with a little right-to-left draw," he said. "I couldn't tell how much I had to spare. It was good enough from 53, I know that." (Tulsa World)

Nichol #2 QB: True freshman Keith Nichol, who had been the Sooners' No. 3 quarterback in the previous two games, entered as the second-string signal caller Saturday. Nichol was 1-of-6 passing for 10 yards. He turned the ball over on a fumbled snap, but also threw a well-placed deep pass that Garrett Bothun could not pull in near the goal line. Joey Halzle also entered the game late, completing his only pass. (NewsOK.com)
