Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy announced today that he will forgo his senior year of football eligibility to enter the NFL Draft.
A two-time All-American and a consensus pick in 2009, McCoy will participate in graduation ceremonies tonight, then complete his degree in Human Relations with online courses this spring.
"I made the decision around mid-season when I knew that I would have enough credits to graduate," McCoy said. "Graduation was my main goal and once I knew I had that accomplished, I wanted to look at playing in the NFL.
"I loved my experience at OU and I'm going to miss it. I accomplished almost everything I wanted to get done here and it's been very positive with my teammates, the coaches, the fans, everyone."
OU Head Coach Bob Stoops praised McCoy and endorsed his decision to enter the draft.
"Gerald is a great example of how to be a student-athlete," said Stoops. "He came here, took care of his academic responsibilities, invested himself in the lives of others and had a great career on the field. I've never been associated with a young man who was any more impressive than Gerald.
"He is extremely mature, and that fact, along with what he has done academically, makes this decision to enter the draft a good one for him."
The announcement comes before McCoy's final game in a Sooner uniform, the 2009 Brut Sun Bowl versus Stanford on Dec. 31. He insists there are no distractions leading into that contest.
"I'm not worried about any of that right now," McCoy said. "We have a big game to win and for now I am a Sooner."
McCoy, from Oklahoma City, was USA Today's National Defensive Player of the Year after his senior season at Southeast High School. He then redshirted during his freshman season at OU, 2006.
He was Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the year and a freshman All-American by numerous outlets in 2007, while helping the Sooners to the Big 12 championship. He spearheaded another Big 12 championship in 2008 when he was cited as a first-team All-American by The Sporting News.
To date, McCoy has 80 career tackles, including 13.5 sacks and 32 tackles for loss. He also registered two fumbles caused, one fumble recovery, one interception and four pass deflections.
With 39 consecutive starts he has established a school record for defensive tackles.
McCoy's impact off the field matched what he accomplished in uniform. A frequent public speaker, he has participated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the United Way and Meals on Wheels among others, while also speaking out against violence towards women and appearing in juvenile centers, with children's groups, elementary schools and area hospitals.
"You never know who needs to hear something from you that day; who needs some encouragement," McCoy said. "When you are a football player at Oklahoma, some people automatically look up to you. I always felt like it was my duty to do all of those things. God called me to that service."
McCoy hopes to do even more. His mother, Patricia, died before her son began his college career. It had been her dream to open a facility in Oklahoma City to receive those who had been evicted and needed a home.
"I want to help get one of those built in her name," he said. "I also want to be involved with a community center for kids. Children will be my main focus."
McCoy said that he will hire an agent after the bowl game and then begin training in earnest for the NFL Combine.(SoonerSports PR) Labels: Gerald McCoy

The team was chosen by the league's coaches. "The number of players recognized is probably the thing that pleases me the most," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. Offensive tackle Trent Williams, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, linebacker Travis Lewis and cornerback Dominique Franks all made the first team. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesESPN College GameDay at Cotton Bowl: ESPN's College GameDay will be at the OU-Texas football game this week at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The show starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, two hours before kickoff between OU and Texas. The Sooners' game against the Longhorns will be televised on ABC HD. College GameDay will be on ESPN HD. GameDay is hosted by Chris Fowler, with analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard. According to a press release from ESPN, the first hour of the show will originate from outside the Cotton Bowl. The second hour will originate from the field inside the stadium. (Tulsa World)Injury update; Granger, McCoy expected to play: After practice on Monday, coach Bob Stoops raised the hopes of Sooner fans everywhere. "Everyone practiced to some degree today," Stoops said. "And right now our trainers are pretty optimistic and feel that everyone will be ready to play. Now, I'm not going to detail it all week on who is where, what percentage — I don't know how to do any of that. It's their feeling today that everyone's expected to play. If I know at one point that someone isn't going to play, then I'll say so." The question marks surrounded a pair of captains in defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and center Jon Cooper, and defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger, a former starter who hasn't played since a foot injury at Washington. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesCooper and McCoy update: Oklahoma hopes to have defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and center Jon Cooper healthy for Saturday's showdown with Texas, after the two were hurt (McCoy injured his toe and Cooper sprained his knee) at Baylor over the weekend. Asked Sunday if McCoy was all right, OU coach Bob Stoops said: "We'll see. I believe so, but I've yet to get a report from our trainer." Asked about Cooper, OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said: "I talked to Scott (Anderson, the Sooners' head athletics trainer) and I think he's going to be pretty good... I expect Jon to go. I don't think it's a big deal, but we'll sense more tomorrow and see how it is." (Tulsa World)Reynolds' perfect game: Middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds made a season high 14 tackles against Baylor, including two for losses. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said it was about as good a game as one of his linebackers has ever played. "He graded out at 100 percent. I don't know that I've ever had that before," he said of Reynold's performance. "I tried to be very nit-picky and he graded out at 100 percent. He does a lot out there. I thought after the game that he played very well and it only confirmed watching the video." (Tulsa World)Johnson surprised Sooners scored only 49 points: The way Manny Johnson saw it, the Sooners came up short in one category against Baylor. Points. "We only scored 49 points," Johnson said. "After getting 28 in the first quarter, you'd have thought that we'd get more than that." (The Oklahoman)McCoy, Cooper, Murray injured: Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy hobbled off the field in the second half after twisting his ankle. But after a brief evaluation by trainers, he was back on his feet walking the sidelines. He never took his shoe off nor left the bench. "I'm good, I'm good," McCoy said. Center Jon Cooper left the game with a sprained knee, but said he too will be ready for Texas. Running back DeMarco Murray had an ice pack on his right knee after the game, but appeared to be walking without a limp. "We have some nicks," coach Bob Stoops said. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesMcCoy named to Good Works Team: Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. It marks the third consecutive year that an Oklahoma player has been named to the prestigious squad. Jacob Gutierrez was on the team in 2006 and Nic Harris received the honor in 2007. "We're proud of the players who have represented us on the Good Works Team, and certainly Gerald is extremely deserving," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "The fact that he was voted a captain as a sophomore speaks to the respect Gerald has earned in our program. Others have noticed Gerald's selfless actions and integrity, and we are pleased that he also is receiving that recognition on the national level." McCoy is currently serving as President of OU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. In that position, he has made a number of speaking appearances at area elementary schools, a facility for underprivileged children and area high schools. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesSam Bradford named to Maxwell watch list: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award. The honor is presented annually to the top player in college football by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia. Bradford, a redshirt freshman, leads the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 181.15. He has completed 128-of-181 passes for 1,689 yards and 20 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His 20 touchdown passes are tied for the sixth-best total in school history. Bradford's position coach, Josh Heupel, also threw 20 in the 2000 national championship season. The school record of 40 was set by Jason White in 2003. Bradford has multiple TD passes in six games, including five in the season opener. That effort tied White's school record. He has completed at least 65% in six games, has no interceptions in four games and has at least one 30-yard pass in every game. Oklahoma players have won the Maxwell Award twice. Tommy McDonald captured the honor in 1956 and White followed in 2004. He becomes the 12th Sooner with more than 100 career catches all-time and the eighth under Bob Stoops. Hold that phone: Bob Stoops couldn't help but interrupt his weekly teleconference with beat writers Sunday afternoon. He was watching Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings beat Chicago. ESPN College GameDay Live! from Norman: ESPN College GameDay is headed for Norman again. Officials with the weekly college football show contacted the Oklahoma Athletics Department Sunday morning with the word that the network had selected this week's homecoming game with the Missouri Tigers. It will be the 14th time the show has been on hand for an Oklahoma game, including last year's game at Texas A&M. GameDay's last visit to Norman was for the 2003 Oklahoma State game. Other trips to Norman included the 2000 Nebraska game, the 2001 Kansas State game and the 1995 Colorado game. The exact location for the GameDay set will be determined later this week. GameDay features host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, who spend two hours each Saturday morning providing in-depth coverage of college football. Play of the Game? With the score tied 14-14 at halftime, Texas came out firing to start the second half. The Longhorns marched 64 yards in seven plays to set up first-and-goal from the Oklahoma 8. A delay of game penalty pushed the ball back to the 13. Texas running back Jamaal Charles rushed over left tackle and was headed toward the end zone when OU linebacker Curtis Lofton grabbed him from behind and used his right hand to slap the football from Charles' grasp. Stoops called it the "play of the game." OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy recovered the fumble at the OU 4-yard line. (Dallas Morning News)
Gerald McCoy returned to starting lineup: Oklahoma redshirt freshman Gerald McCoy returned to the starting lineup at defensive tackle for the first time since the second week of the season. McCoy broke a bone in his right hand against Miami and sat out the following week. McCoy has played the last two games as a backup, with his hand in a cast. (Dallas Morning News)

Cast allows McCoy to play despite broken hand: Despite breaking a bone in his right hand, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been practicing and playing thanks to a cast he only wears on the field. In games, McCoy can't grab with his right hand, but he can move his wrist thanks to adjustments made to the cast. He can also take the cast off before and after practice. During the day, he tapes his middle and ring finger together to support the broken fourth metacarpal bone he suffered against Miami. After missing the Utah State game, McCoy returned against Tulsa and made his first and only tackle of the season.
