Jon Cooper on Rimington Watch List

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes'

Cooper named to Rimington Watch List: Oklahoma's Jon Cooper has been named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Award, which is presented annually to the top center in college football. Cooper has been a mainstay in the Sooner offensive line since he broke in as a starter in 2005. He has played in 34 games at OU with 29 starts. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Cooper is a 6-2, 285-pound senior. In all, there are 43 players on the watch List. The PAC-10 checks in with the most candidates, with seven players being named. The Big-12 is represented by six players. The SEC and Big East Conference have five players each on the Watch List. (SoonerSports PR)

OU defense suffers penalty plagued practice: Several defensive players came into the interview room Thursday pouring in sweat after a sloppy practice resulted in extra running for the defense. "We're nowhere close to being good enough," said defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. "We had way too many mistakes today." Bob Stoops called a coaches' meeting immediately after practice, meaning none of the defensive coaches were available for comment. According to McCoy, the defense was plagued by "penalties," "lack of intensity" and "mental errors." (The Oklahoman)

Holmes back to Free Safety

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooner Fans ESPN The Magazine needs you: ESPN The Magazine has a new series "A Season in the Stands" featuring college football's top four programs and their fans! Oklahoma is among the four featured with USC, Georgia and Ohio State. ESPN The Magazine is looking for University of Oklahoma students and fans to document their 2008 college football season in the stands. For more information visit ESPNTheMag.com.

Lendy Holmes moves back to free safety: After spending the first two weeks of preseason practice at cornerback, Lendy Holmes was moved back to free safety this week, clearing the way for Dominique Franks to move back into the starting lineup at field cornerback. "It's been good having Lendy over there working with Dom, and in all honesty Dom's had a pretty good camp," secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright said Thursday. "He's gotten much better the last couple of days. At the moment, Franks and Brian Jackson are OU's starting cornerbacks, with Holmes and Nic Harris starting at the safety spots. Redshirt freshman Sam Proctor has shifted into a backup role behind Harris at strong safety. "The competition is really the thing that keeps everybody on edge, keeps everybody focused, keeps everybody working to get better," Wright said. (The Oklahoman)

Video board preview: SoonerSports.com takes a look at finishing touches taking place on OU's new video board.

Jimmy Stevens ahead of competition? While one former Union Redskin, Franks, has made a move up the depth chart, another, Tress Way, appears to have slipped. Addressing his kicking game after practice Thursday, OU coach Bob Stoops said, "Jimmy might be a little bit ahead of them. He's got the lead." That's Jimmy Stevens, the Oklahoma City Heritage Hall redshirt freshman fighting Way to take over for Garrett Hartley as kicker. Stoops reported Stevens hit a field goal to close out an end-of-game two-minute drill at practice on Thursday. (Tulsa World)

OU's No Huddle Offense Has Its Drawbacks

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU Coaches talk about the no-huddle offense:
The Sooners have joined the growing horde of teams experimenting with no huddles. "It's the trend," said Sooner defensive coordinator Brent Venables. In the same way the wishbone took over college football in the 1970s, and the spread did the same almost a decade ago, the no-huddle is all the rage in the 21st century, going from fad to standard in a season or two. "I don't think offenses would do it if it weren't advantageous, to a degree," Venables said. Bob Stoops says he ordered implementation of the no-huddle for mathematical reasons. "I want to get as many at-bats as they do," Stoops said. "I don't want anyone having more snaps than we do." Wilson, OU's offensive coordinator, ran the no-huddle for four years at Northwestern. Twice, his Northwestern team led the nation in offensive plays. But I'll bet Northwestern ranked high in plays allowed, too. That's the delicate nature of the no-huddle. Even if it helps your offense, it can hurt your defense. "To me, the problems are, can you protect your defense?" Wilson said. "At Northwestern, our defenses weren't any good. We didn't really worry about helping them." That's why Wilson must be careful. For example, coaches say OU this spring practiced about 60 percent huddle, 40 percent no-huddle. (The Oklahoman)

OU confirms Malcolm Kelly to run another 40: University of Oklahoma spokesman Kenny Mossman said Kelly will run the 40-yard dash again on Wednesday, presumably on AstroTurf, after running 4.68 and 4.75 last Wednesday. After his workout, Kelly sounded off about the setup, particularly a perceived lack of loyalty to him by "certain people" on the OU football staff. He also criticized the OU training staff for misdiagnosing an injury that kept him out of the Fiesta Bowl. Kelly was upset because he and OU strength coach Jerry Schmidt agreed he would run his 40s on the AstroTurf of the Mosier Center instead of the Field Turf of the Everest Center, on which every other OU football player has worked out for NFL scouts the last two years. Stoops Impressed With OU's Defensive Play

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Clayton continues to impress: Converted safety Keenan Clayton continued to make his push at strongside linebacker Saturday by playing, according to Stoops, every snap of the scrimmage. "Keenan Clayton did an excellent job," the coach said. "He's turning into a really solid player." Clayton made four tackles, picked up one of OU's six sacks and created one of the Sooners' three defensive touchdowns. (Tulsa World)

Small crowd: The official attendance for yesterday's Red/White game was 23,306.

Coach Stoops impressed with corners play: Cornerback Brian Jackson and safety Sam Proctor also broke up a pair of passes and the offense’s lack of big plays. "I thought their positioning was great. I thought the corners were excellent," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "Guys like Sam Proctor had big days that really showed. They were in position all day and that’s pleasing to see as a coach." (Norman Transcript)

Injury Report: Players who missed the scrimmage: Cornerback Quinton Carter (hamstring), defensive end Auston English (shoulder), linebacker Austin Box (elbow), wide receivers Ryan Broyles (collarbone) and Adron Tennell (knee), offensive tackle Duke Robinson (ankle), safety Nic Harris (shoulder), defensive end John Williams (heel) and tailbacks DeMarco Murray (knee) and Chris Brown (knee). (The Oklahoman)

Fan calls first offensive touchdown in scrimmage: [Shae] Farmer is the Carrollton, Ga., resident who won an auction to call four plays during Saturday's scrimmage. He didn't know exactly what play he wanted to call, but Farmer knew he wanted tight end Jermaine Gresham going deep. So the call came down from the coaches' box for a play-action pass. Quarterback Sam Bradford laid the ball out perfectly for Gresham to run under it and the tight end beat two defenders to the goal line for the first offensive touchdown of the game. In fact, it was the only offensive touchdown until a pair of scores in the final three minutes of the game. Farmer and his wife, Kimberly, had no interest in attending Saturday's game, though they planned to come to Norman at some point, maybe this fall. After hearing about the SoonerSports.com auction, the two decided to post a bid, joking with each other about how funny it would be if they won. And they did. But the $2,900 he paid to call four plays was only part of the battle. They still had to get to Oklahoma, a 13-hour drive from their Georgia home. "I crossed into Oklahoma state lines for the first time (Friday)," Farmer said. "This stadium is gorgeous. It's unreal. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to even get over here and see something like this. You see it on TV, then you get here and it's everything you thought it could be. "It's well worth it." (10/8) Venables on OU's Linebackers; Oklahoma Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Hartley continues season struggles: Senior kicker Garrett Hartley of Southlake Carroll continued struggling. Hartley hooked a 38-yard field goal attempt wide left with 19 seconds left. He has missed two field goal and three extra-point attempts this season. (Dallas Morning News)

Venables takes the fall for linebackers coverage: Texas' five plays involving tight ends Jermichael Finley and Blaine Irby gained 175 yards. The Longhorns' 50 other plays gained 210. Since Finley and Irby were primarily the responsibility of Sooner linebackers, Venables, OU's linebacker coach, put himself squarely on the spot. "I've got to do a better job and get them better aligned and play with better technique and better awareness and all of the above," he said Sunday. "That's obviously discouraging. Obviously you're glad you won despite that. We couldn't play any worse in the coverage aspect on those snaps." (Tulsa World)

Malcolm Kelly Upbeat Despite Loss; Stoops on Bradford's Confidence

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Malcolm Kelly upbeat despite no catches in a loss to Colorado: "We got a good scheme now," said Kelly, who didn't have a pass thrown his way in Saturday's 27-24 loss to Colorado. "We'll be able to counter that." Kelly said he was frustrated by not being a bigger part of the offense but appeared upbeat after practice. "If I sit around and worry about that, I'm not getting better, getting ready for Texas," Kelly said. "That's all behind me now." (NewsOK.com)

Stoops not worried about Bradford's confidence: With Texas looming, is OU coach Bob Stoops concerned about his redshirt freshman’s state of mind? "No, I don’t think his confidence will be shaken whatsoever," Stoops answered during the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday morning. "He's doing an excellent job in what we're asking him to do. He was the least of our problems the other day. There’s a whole bunch of other things around him that need to be better." (Tulsa World)

Venables: No scheme found in Texas loss to Kansas State: Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said when he played the tape of Kansas State's 41-21 win over Texas, he was hoping to see the Wildcats had come up with a definitive scheme to stop the Longhorns."That wasn't the case," Venables said. "When Texas wasn't turning the ball over, they were moving the ball. They had to play catch-up... but you would be getting ahead of yourself if you thought Kansas State shut 'em down." Sooners in Full Pads; Lendy Holmes to Free Safety

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooners to practice in full pads today:
Hot and breezy conditions greeted the Sooner football team Sunday evening in Norman during the squad's fourth practice of the preseason. OU worked for two-and-one-half hours at the rugby fields west of Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners are slated to break out full pads for the first time in the preseason for Monday's practice. (SoonerSports)

A. Peterson back at Vikings practice: Adrian Peterson didn't pile up any official stats, and there wasn't a log of his minutes of live action on the practice fields at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. But his mere participation Saturday was noteworthy for the Vikings. "It's nice to see him out there," Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. "Obviously, you could see his speed. He still has a long way to go as far as catching up mentally, but he's doing a nice job." Although the practice lasted just over an hour, Peterson teased Viking fans on a couple of plays. After missing Friday's practice against the Chiefs because of a hip pointer, Peterson was happy to just return to the fold. "I felt pretty good," he said. "Getting the reps, and just getting in the groove. Each rep counts. So it felt good to be out there and get some work in." Despite his minor injury, Childress said he liked Peterson competing and practicing Saturday. (Pioneer Press)

Oklahoma shuffles DBs; Holmes to free safety: The surprise move for the start of preseason practice is the shift of Lendy Holmes from cornerback to free safety. Venables said Holmes has taken to the new position like a fish to water. "He covers a lot of ground and has a lot of range. He's had hands all over the ball," Venables said. "He's really transitioned well in knowing where he needs to be and playing well in space. He does a great job of reading the quarterback." (More at Norman Transcript)

(4/3) Sooners Injury Report, Harris on Watch List, And More.

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU's Harris on Lott Watch List:
University of Oklahoma defensive back Nic Harris has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2007 Ronnie Lott Trophy.Harris, a junior from Alexandria, La., played nickel back and strong safety last season and is expected to line up exclusively at strong safety this season. He is one of 42 defenders on the watch list.Harris was third on the OU team last season with 68 tackles and led the Sooners with four interceptions. (
Tulsa World)

Injury Report; Reynold out atleast four month, Madu spained ankle: Oklahoma linebacker Ryan Reynolds is set to have surgery on the torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee today and might be out at least four months The early diagnosis of the injury, which occurred Wednesday, was a partially torn LCL that would require only four to six weeks of rehabilitation... Norman native Mossis Madu, who has worked himself into some playing time both at running back and slot receiver for the Sooners, suffered a high left ankle sprain Monday. (From NewsOK.com)

Stoops confident in LB core: Personnel has changed. Expectations have not. "It's coming," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "The guys that have looked the best have a chance to be a really, really good group. Ryan Reynolds and Curtis Lofton inside and Demarrio Pleasant and Lewis (Baker), who's played a ton out on the perimeter, those guys are solid. "The other guys, it's just learning everything. They're getting better. Mike Reed is doing a good job, and Lamont (Robinson) is getting better. It just takes some time, takes a lot of snaps." (Tulsa World)

Class of '08 Recruit Arrested: Justin Johnson, a Gilmer, Texas, running back who has verbally committed to play at Oklahoma in 2008, was one of three people who voluntarily surrendered to police last Thursday for misdemeanor criminal mischief warrants, according to a report Saturday in the Longview (Texas) News-Journal. Johnson, the No. 2-rated running back in Texas, Arsenial Richardson and Dean Griffith have confessed to spray painting various marks on at least one car Feb. 24. The investigation is ongoing and the Upshur County sheriff's office anticipates charging the multiple juvenile offenders with crimes associated with these acts. (NewsOK.com)

(3/19) Oklahoma Sooners Football Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

A good spring break to everyone!

Highly touted McCoy impressses during scrimmage: Gerald McCoy, the 2005 USA Today National Defensive Player of the Year at Oklahoma City Southeast, started Wednesday's scrimmage at defensive tackle. He made five tackles and was an occasional presence in the opposing offense's backfield. It was a sign of the growth the Sooners had in mind when they decided to redshirt McCoy last fall. "Gerald's doing really well," coach Bob Stoops said. "He's jumping the ball well and continues to make really good improvement. We're happy with him." (
Tulsa World)

Bobby Jack Wright would like to alternate corners: [Reggie] Smith and Marcus Walker are slotted as the starters this spring, with Lendy Holmes and once-ostracized D.J. Wolfe in backup roles. Among them, only Smith has started fewer than 11 games at cornerback during his career. "Our plan will be now, during the course of a ballgame, will be able to alternate by every two or three series," said OU secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright. "Then you've always got fresh corners out there. And good corners. "It's not like there's nobody over there anymore." (

Quote of the week, Stoops on defense: "We need to improve," Stoops said. "But the potential is there to be really good." (

(11/16) AP Voter Removed After Oklahoma Vote, and Sooner Articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

AP Pollster removed after mistaken Oklahoma vote: A voter for The Associated Press college football poll was removed from the poll board Wednesday because he mistakenly thought Oklahoma had lost to Texas Tech and voted the Sooners lower in this week's rankings. Jim Kleinpeter of The Times-Picayune of New Orleans said he tried to find the score of the Oklahoma game, but was unable to do so. AP sports editor Terry Taylor said: "We understand mistakes can happen, but we thought this one could have been prevented. The heart of the matter here is the credibility of the poll." (AP/ESPN.com)

Oklahoma defense near preseason expectations after slow start? The Sooners have improved dramatically, leading the Big 12 in scoring defense, pass defense and total defense. Nationally, OU ranks in the top 25 in each of those categories. "We were awful close early in the year to playing like we are now, to playing like we're expecting ourselves to," Bob Stoops said. "We would have some certain individuals in certain areas break down, that's not (Venables') fault. "As much as you would always like to take the blame, sometimes guys are in position. They need to be able to step up and do it. "I think Brent has worked with our guys in a great way the entire year. It's showed for many, many weeks now. We're playing like we thought all along we were capable of. Some thought we were blowing smoke, but we're decent." (NewsOK.com)

Oklahoma Sooners Football Articles and Notes

Venables sees progress in defense:
OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables can see his defense progressing. It's visible in the statistics, as well as the game tape. "If you go back and watch (the Oregon game), it's obvious to see the growth we've had, the improvement that guys have made at a lot of the little things," Venables said. "We learned a great deal as a staff and as a defense, with how we let that game slip away. "Unfortunately, we have a loss under our belt because of it, but we learned from it." (NewsOK.com)

(10/9) Oklahoma-Iowa State Kickoff set, Mistakes Cost Sooners' and OU articles

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU- Iowa State game time set for 11:30 FSN:
Oklahoma and Iowa State will kickoff at 11:30 a.m., when the two collide in Norman, Saturday. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Network. It is the Big 12 home opener for the Sooners. Oklahoma and Iowa State have not played since the 2003 season when the Sooners rolled to a 53-7 victory at Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones' last trip to Norman 2002) resulted in a 49-3 OU triumph. This is the first of two straight home games for OU, which will entertain Colorado the following week. (SoonerSports Release)

Mistakes cost Sooners' offensive: Kevin Wilson calls it an S.I.W. Self-inflicted wounds. False starts, fumbles, sacks, dropped passes. Plays where the offense stops itself, rather than the defense stopping it. The Sooners fumbled six times, losing three, and were flagged for moving before the snap five times. "We had 63 plays as an offense, and we're looking at about 15 to 18 of those being negatives," Wilson said Sunday. "We'll have this outcome again if we don't learn from those mistakes." (NewsOK.com)

McCoy escape allows UT touchdown: Both Stoops and defensive coordinator Brent Venables reviewed Sunday a costly play the OU defense failed to make during Texas' first touchdown drive. On third-and-10 from the Sooners' 37, Colt McCoy rolled left to elude the rush of both safety Nic Harris and linebacker Zach Latimer, then found Quan Cosby for 16 yards. "We've got a blitz on and come free and let him escape us," Stoops said. Instead of punting, the Longhorns ran two more plays before Selvin Young's 15-yard touchdown run. (Tulsa World)

More playing time for younger players: OU offensive tackle Chris Messner wasn't hurt when he left Saturday's game in the final minutes. Wilson said he was simply trying to get one of his younger players, true freshman Trent Williams, some playing time. Williams played guard, and Branndon Braxton moved out to tackle. (NewsOK.com)

(10/8) Adrian Peterson back in 2007? OU-Texas notes, columns and more.

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Peterson says, "We've just got to see" if its the final OU-Texas
: Three years ago, Adrian Peterson said he signed with Oklahoma rather than Texas because the Sooners had a better opportunity to win national championships. On Saturday, he exited the Cotton Bowl with 109 yards rushing and a touchdown, but with his second straight loss to the Longhorns. "I was pumped up, ready to play Texas," said Peterson, moments after getting some consoling words from Longhorns coach Mack Brown. "Any year, anybody would be ready to play this game." If Peterson, a junior, decides to enter the NFL draft after this season, he'll look back at Saturday as the defeat that guaranteed his leaving Oklahoma without a national title. If he goes pro, he'll also conclude his OU career with a 1-2 record against Texas. "We've just got to see, man," he said. "We've got a long season to go." (Dallas Morning News)

Sooners' D-Line overmatched by Texas' OL? One perceived mismatch entering the game was Texas' offensive line over OU's defensive line. The perception held true early as the Longhorns compiled nearly half (56) of their 127 total rushing yards in the first quarter. Defensive end Larry Birdine says the Sooners weren't caught off guard by much of what Texas did on the offensive line. "Their running backs were able to make plays and their linemen were staying on blocks." (NewsOK.com)

Peterson praises UT's kick coverage: Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson praised the directional kickoffs of Texas' Greg Johnson. After Texas' first touchdown, Peterson returned the kickoff a career-long 59 yards, although an OU penalty negated 15 yards of it. But on his ensuing three returns, Peterson totaled 35 yards. "Every time I caught it, they were almost there in my face," he said. (Dallas Morning News)

Kelly disappointed with execution: OU receiver Malcolm Kelly was frustrated, but not by the fact that Texas limited him to two receptions for 31 yards. "Our execution was poor," he said. "I'm disappointed because no one really knows our potential like I feel our team does, and we definitely didn't show it." (Star-Telegram)

Lack of pressure costly to Sooners defensive: OU defensive end C.J. Ah You had a team-high eight tackles against UT, and Calvin Thibodeaux had three tackles for loss. But defensive end Larry Birdine said the line didn't put enough pressure on quarterback Colt McCoy, and when OU blitzed, the secondary became vulnerable. "I'm very disappointed, especially since I was a non-factor in the second half," said Birdine, who had only one tackle. (Dallas Morning News)
