(5/26) OU Football Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Falcons waive DJ Wolfe: The Atlanta Falcons waived former Oklahoma defensive back D.J. Wolfe on Friday. A day after not being taken in April’s NFL Draft, the Falcons had signed Wolfe to a rookie free agent contract. Wolfe, who played running back, cornerback and finally strong safety in college, led the Sooners with four interceptions last season and earned second-team All-Big 12 honors. (The Oklahoman)

Sooner Caravan stops in Dallas June 7th: Oklahoma's Sooner Caravan will make its annual stop in Dallas at 7 p.m. June 3. DJ Wolfe, Marcus Walker at the NFL Scouting Combine

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU's Wolfe and Walker run the 40; neither time in the top 10:
OU cornerback Reggie Smith didn't run at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, likely due to the broken big toe that kept him out of the Fiesta Bowl. Smith will have a chance to show his speed in front of scouts during OU's pro day on March 11. Cornerback Marcus Walker and safety D.J. Wolfe, meanwhile, did run the 40-yard dash at the combine. Walker posted a 40-time of 4.59; Wolfe ran a 4.65. Neither time ranked in the top 10 for defensive backs. (The Oklahoman)

Lee Roy Selmon Finally Gets His '75 Outland Trophy

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Selmon receives '75 Outland Trophy: Sooner great Lee Roy Selmon finally picked up his Outland Trophy 32 years after winning the award. Selmon joined 2007 recipient, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, at an awards dinner in Omaha, Neb., on Thursday evening. The Outland award, presented each season to the nation's best collegiate interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America, didn't present an actual trophy until the 1980s, so a past recipient is brought back each year to receive his own hardware. "When you think of Outland, you think of guys from Nebraska and Oklahoma -- big-time football players -- guys with great character who basically come out and just beat the tar out of you,'' Dorsey said. Wolfe to play in Senior Bowl: Oklahoma safety D.J. Wolfe has been selected to play in this year's Under Armour Senior Bowl. The game will be played Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The contest will kick off at 3 p.m., and be televised on the NFL Network, Cox digital cable 252. (Tulsa World)

DJ Wolfe Suffers Injury, Lofton Impresses Despite illness

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Wolfe suffers strained quadriceps: OU co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright said Wednesday that senior strong safety D.J. Wolfe should not be limited Friday by a mild quadriceps strain that has bothered him this week. But just in case, Wright has gotten extra work for a few other players at the strong safety position this week, namely senior Darien Williams and freshman Dominique Franks. "If an emergency came up, we've got guys that are ready to go,” Wright said. (NewsOK.com)

Lofton plays sick against Utah State: Curtis Lofton's effort against Utah State last week -- a career-high 12 tackles and his first career interception, which he returned 45 yards for TD -- was strong enough on its own merit. Then came defensive coordinator Brent Venables' disclosure Monday. "He was sick before the game, threw up all over the linebacker drills," Venables said. "There were noodles on the 26-yard line." Still sick, Lofton took several intravenous fluids Monday. (Tulsa World)

(4/2) Sooners Youth Shined at Scrimmage, Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooners youth highlight scrimmage: Three sophomores and a freshman accounted for the four touchdowns in the event. When it was over, OU head coach Bob Stoops, who was critical after his team's first major scrimmage, was more positive about his team. "It was better," he said. "The intensity, the effort, the enthusiasm all were really good. We've got improvement to make in clearing up some mistakes but that's why we practice." Redshirt freshman running back DeMarco Murray again practiced well. He rushed 16 times for 132 yards and one touchdown. (Stats and more at

Wolfe playing at safety: For the third time in his four years at Oklahoma, D.J. Wolfe has landed at a new position, playing with the first-team defense at free safety in Saturday's scrimmage at Owen Field. "I'm loving it, being able to get back there and have vision of the whole field and be in the action," Wolfe said of the move to safety. "I hate to say it, but it might be better than corner." Wolfe moved to safety as the Sooners try to find a suitable backup for returning starter Darien Williams who is out for the spring after undergoing offseason knee surgery. (

Kevin Wilson on turnovers and quarterbacks: Afterward, coordinator Kevin Wilson said he sped the pace from the March 14 scrimmage, which likely contributed to the turnovers. He said coaches hadn't met to discuss the quarterbacks' progress, let alone determine any kind of pecking order, something he feels is a long way off. (
Tulsa World)

All three quarterbacks have potential? According to at least one receiver, any of the three could claim the job."(All) of them have the opportunity to potentially get us where we need to go," Quentin Chaney said. "They're coming along very well. They're all pretty comfortable back there." (
Norman Transcript)

Injury Report: Left guard Duke Robinson injured his shoulder in Friday's practice and was not available. Cornerback Lendy Holmes has a bruised sternum and will be held out a few days as well. Holmes, a receiver-turned-defensive back who is also talented at basketball, still managed to show off his versatility. (

(12/3) Stoops Big 12 Bonus, Marcus Walker Injury, Kelly Record and Oklahoma Articles

Oklahoma Sooners Football Articles and Notes

Stoops gets Big 12 Championship bonus: Saturday's Big 12 championship win capped a lucrative week for Bob Stoops, who attained several contractual performance bonuses. Stoops earned $80,000 for OU's Big 12 title game win and another $100,000 for advancing to the Fiesta Bowl (thanks, Texas). He'd already padded his receivables ledger $30,000 for being voted Big 12 Coach of the Year earlier in the week. (NewsOK.com) Coach Stoops still has $235,000 in possible bonuses by seasons end.

Walker Injury allows Wolfe playing time: OU corner Marcus Walker was injured while covering a punt with 3:33 remaining in the second quarter. His injury opened the door for D.J. Wolfe, who has gotten little playing time since giving up a 33-yard touchdown pass against Texas. On third-and-3 from the Nebraska 27, Zac Taylor threw a deep pass intended for Terrence Nunn. Wolfe made his first interception of the season. (Dallas Morning News)

Fastest Big 12 title game TD: When Patrick powered into the end zone on the Sooners' first play, the Big 12 championship had the earliest touchdown in its 11-year history, 48 seconds after kickoff. The previous quickest TD also belonged to OU. Kejuan Jones scored on a 42-yard run against Kansas State in 2003, 2:45 after kickoff. (Tulsa World)

Record Big XII Championship crowd: The crowd of 80,031 for Saturday's game at Arrowhead Stadium was the largest for a Big 12 Championship. (NewsOK.com)

Kelly sets Big 12 receiving years record: Oklahoma's Malcolm Kelly caught 10 passes for 142 yards, setting a Big 12 championship game record for yards receiving, breaking the mark of 140 yards set by Kansas State's Darnell McDonald in 1998 against Texas A&M. (Kansas City Star)

Oklahoma lacks a ground game against Nebraska: Oklahoma came into the game with the third-best rushing offense in the Big 12 and 14th-best in the country, averaging 188.7 yards a game. The Sooners had run for 224 or more yards in four of their past five games, all without Adrian Peterson. But Saturday, the Sooners averaged 1.5 yards per carry and had one run of double-digit yards, an 11-yarder by Allen Patrick. (Star-Telegram)
