Johnson named Offensive Player of the Week

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Johnson named Big 12 offensive player of the week: Manual Johnson (Oklahoma), Trent Hunter (Texas A&M) and Nate Swift (Nebraska) have been named Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week as selected by a media panel. All three received their first career weekly award. (Big 12 Sports PR)

BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Manual Johnson, Oklahoma, WR, Sr, Gilmer, Texas
Playing against the nation's top-ranked defense, Manual Johnson set a school record with 206 receiving yards on five receptions in OU's 35-10 win over No. 24 TCU. He broke Mark Clayton's record of 190 yards against Texas in 2003. Johnson also became the second player in OU history to record three plays of 55+ yards in the same game, joining Antonio Perkins (three punt returns against UCLA in 2003). Johnson recorded touchdown receptions of 79, 55 and 63 yards against the Horned Frogs and averaged 41.2 yards per reception.

Braxton misses practice with injury

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Braxton held out of Monday's practice: Oklahoma senior right tackle Branndon Braxton - the Sooners' top reserve offensive lineman - missed practice Monday with an injury, OU coach Bob Stoops said. Braxton appeared to injure his lower leg Saturday in OU's home win against TCU. (Dallas Morning News) Other injury updates, both offensive tackle Trent Williams and tight end Jermaine Gresham both practiced Monday.

OU vs. TCU: Post Game Articles and Notes

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Johnson sets receiving record: On an offense loaded with playmakers, Johnson was the most lethal Saturday, finishing with five catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns. The 206 yards set a Sooner record for receiving yards in a game, eclipsing Mark Clayton's 190 yards against Baylor in 2003. "Manny Johnson had such a huge game," coach Bob Stoops said. "I told him I thought that was one of the best performances we've had by a wide receiver here in 10 years." (The Oklahoman)

Bradford's performance: Sam Bradford's career-best 411 passing yards is the third-most all-time by a Sooner quarterback. In addition, Bradford's 202 first-quarter passing yards set an OU record for passing yards in the opening quarter by a Sooner quarterback.

Williams injured: OU right tackle Trent Williams left the game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle, according to OU coach Bob Stoops. Williams was hurt when Bradford was sacked and his momentum carried him onto the side Williams' leg. Williams played in the second half. He limped off the field at the end of the game with his foot heavily taped. (Tulsa World)

Thunder players in attendance: NBA Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant was interviewed on the field during the second half. Durant and several Oklahoma City Thunder teammates like Jeff Green, D.J. White, Kyle Weaver and others watched the game from Thunder owner Clay Bennett's suite. (The Oklahoman)

Sooners Defeat TCU 35-10

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Bradford leads OU with career-high 411 yards passing: With a dominant defense and Sam Bradford's pinpoint passing, Oklahoma is on its way back to No. 1. Bradford threw for a career-best 411 yards and four touchdowns, Manuel Johnson set a school record with 206 yards receiving and the second-ranked Sooners avenged their last loss at Owen Field by beating No. 24 TCU 35-10 Saturday night. With top-ranked Southern California and three other top 10 teams losing, Oklahoma (4-0) made as strong a case as anyone to get back to No. 1 for the first time since it lost to Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 championship game. No. 1 Trojans fall to Beavers

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Oregon State defeats No. 1 USC: Less than two weeks ago, Southern California established itself as the country's top team when it routed No. 5 Ohio State. Rekindling the magic of the glory years of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush was short-lived and its national championship hopes are in jeopardy. Oregon State stunned the visiting Trojans, 27-21, Thursday night for the first jaw-dropping upset of the season. The Beavers (2-2) turned the national title race on its ear and the reverberations can be heard in Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Missouri. (New York Times)

Where does it leave OU?
Scenario 1: Possibly No. 1 with a big win over No. 23 TCU this weekend, and a close Georgia and Alabama game.

Scenario 2: Possibly still No. 2 with No. 3 Georgia playing No. 8 Alabama, an impressive win against Alabama could close the slim 9 point advantage Oklahoma has over Georgia.

Scenario 3: No. 4 Florida plays Mississippi, who only trails OU by 42 points in the Associated Press poll. A blowout win by Florida and close games for Georgia and OU could leave Florida No. 1. (
Top 25)

AP Poll:
2. Oklahoma (0 1st place votes) 1484 points
3. Georgia (2 1st place votes) 1475
4. Florida (1 1st place vote) 1442

Bradford the Best QB in Big 12?

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

ESPN's Mel Kiper praises Sam Bradford: From ESPN SportsNation chat, NFL Draft guru, Mel Kiper talks about Sam Bradford's potential.

Q: Rob (Omaha, NE): Better QBs: Big 12 or NFC West?
Mel Kiper: Oh boy... in the NFC West, you have (Matt) Hasselbeck, Trent Green, JT O'Sullivan and Kurt Warner. But you can't compare the two. The Big 12 has some great college QBs. The best is Sam Bradford. By far. It's not even close when you project to the NFL. He's tremendously accurate. Unbelieveable smarts and intelligence. He's tall. Makes great decisions. Excellent talent around him. He's going to have a decision to make in January. (Missouri's) Chase Daniel could win the Heisman, but he's not going to project highly in the NFL. (More at ESPN.com)

Stoops: OU closed practices for new offense

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

TCU denies spying on OU: UPDATE: Oklahoma closed its preseason scrimmages this season. Well-connected Tulsa World columnist Dave Sittler linked the move to the Horned Frogs' 17-10 upset of OU in 2005. He suggested OU coach Bob Stoops closed the scrimmages because he felt "information some friends of the TCU program picked up watching the scrimmages" in 2005 helped the Horned Frogs beat the Sooners. Patterson raised the subject following his team's win over Stanford on Sept. 13 and addressed it again in a phone interview Sunday. The Horned Frogs taped the publicly available TV broadcast of Oklahoma's spring game, Patterson said, looking for schemes and personnel. "As far as us watching their practices, I took a little bit of offense that they would think that I would have someone go and spy on their practices, because, absolutely, that did not happen," Patterson said. "But did we watch the spring tapes as far as the spring game? We did, and I watched all summer." (More at Dallas Morning News)(9/22/08)
UPDATE: Bob Stoops acknowledged Tuesday that he closed preseason scrimmages this season not because he was concerned about spies feeding information to this week's opponent, TCU, but because the Sooners were trying out a new offense. "I think it's pretty obvious why we closed practices," Stoops said during his weekly press luncheon. "I think our no-huddle offense has been pretty obvious we didn't want to let on how much we were using it, all our terminology at the line of scrimmage -- even defensively, our terminology going against it, all of that is pretty obvious why we didn't want anyone being at our practices."(Tulsa World)

R.J. Washington not ready yet

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Mensik suffers ankle injury:
Third-string tight end Eric Mensik has a broken ankle and will be out for at least a month, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Tuesday. Mensik suffered the injury in practice during the Sooners' open week when a teammate fell on his ankle during a blocking drill. The sophomore from Rosenberg, Texas, saw significant action in a 55-14 victory over Washington two weeks ago. (The Oklahoman)

Stoops not ready to play R.J. Washington yet: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that he's not ready to burn a year of eligibility yet for freshman defensive end R.J. Washington. Stoops said Washington is still getting adjusted to the Sooners' defense. "If you just play a 4-3 and let those guys get wide and go, then he'd be in there," Stoops said. "There is just so much when you zone blitz. Who's dropping? Who's blitzing. Where you're blitzing. Is he twisting around somebody or is he going straight? R.J. is a bright, young guy who is doing great. We're probably just a little bit too complex in all that we ask these guys to do. We just fear that we're going to play him and, through the whole year, it's not going to be enough to warrant giving up his year." (Dallas Morning News)

Stoops open to moving conference games earlier: [The] OU coach was asked if he would be willing to play a Big 12 Conference opponent over the first few weeks of a season, thereby bumping one of the nonconference games down the calendar a bit. "I'd be open to it," he said. "I see the benefits for your crowd and for media and fan interest and college football's interest, to have a conference game somewhere in there early." As to how soon into a season Stoops would feel comfortable playing a conference foe? "I'd prefer three (weeks)," he said. "Sometimes two's enough, depending on how many guys you have coming back." Andros was a guard for Jim Tatum's 1946 Sooners. He distinguished himself with a superb defensive performance against Army that season. The Cadets were one of college football's all-time greatest teams and hadn't lost in three years, but '45 Heisman Trophy winner Glenn Davis was held to 19 yards on 12 carries. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Stoops on Granger injury: Coach Bob Stoop on DeMarcus Granger injury... "There's something in the tendon and the bone and they (OU physicians) are experimenting on whether to let it heal or take four weeks and see if DeMarcus can come back, or the other thing is to possibly do surgery and pin it," OU coach Bob Stoops said following Wednesday's practice. "DeMarcus and the doctors are uncertain. I know it's been reported that he's done for the year. That isn't the case yet. If he gets it pinned, he obviously will be. If he doesn't, he could be out four or five weeks. We'll just see." (Norman Transcript)

OU's practice schedule: With an idle Saturday, the Sooners altered their practice schedule slightly this week. "Our Tuesday and Wednesday as we go through the week are usually pretty heavy," Stoops said. "They go against each other a lot on inside drill and team sessions. We try to keep each other sharp. Blitz periods, we come after each other. We'll do that Tuesday and Wednesday and probably part of Thursday." (Tulsa World)

Moore to see more action: The Sooners plan to keep their four-man rotation at defensive tackle with or without Granger. Junior Cordero Moore will move up to Granger's spot. "I think he'll do a good job," defensive tackles coach Jackie Shipp said of Moore. "We'll keep working at it and we'll get him ready." Moore saw his first action of the season in the Washington game. Granger to miss rest of the season?

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

DeMarcus Granger out at least 4 weeks: Oklahoma junior defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger of Kimball will be out at least a month and could miss the rest of the season because of a left foot injury he suffered Saturday in a win at Washington, Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday. Stoops said that Granger and team physicians are considering two treatment options. One option is to allow the foot to heal, which Stoops said could take four to five weeks. The other is to undergo surgery and have a pin inserted into his foot, which would cause Granger to miss the remainder of the season. Stoops said he would make an announcement on the choice that is made once a decision on the treatment has been reached. (Dallas Morning News)

Officials unveil Cotton Bowl renovations

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Dallas officials unveil Cotton Bowl renovations: Today, city officials are set to reveal the biggest transformation in the Cotton Bowl's 78-year history, a $57 million upgrade that added more than 16,000 seats to its end zones, finishing out the ends of its oval bowl with upper-level decks and bringing its total capacity to 92,200. It's a change Cotton Bowl backers hope will mean a brighter future for a facility that many have dismissed as having its best days behind it. "I don't think there is a bad seat in the stadium anymore," said Fair Park's general manager Daniel Huerta as he looked out over the field from the top of the north end-zone seats. Stoops not paying attention to rankings: For now, Sooner coach Bob Stoops isn't paying much attention. "In the end, it's a long year," he said. "All we can focus on is being the absolute best we can be each time we play. "(The ranking) really doesn't do anything to us right now. We have so many more games to play." As the season evolves, Stoops said, the rankings become more relevant. "It's a long way to earn your way to something like that," he said. "That's what our focus will be on, earning it. OU's Granger suffers sprained foot

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

DeMarcus Granger suffering from a sprained left foot: Oklahoma junior defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger of Kimball suffered a sprained left foot late in the first half Saturday against Washington on a play in which Huskies' players appeared to rough him up. "There looked to be some of that," OU coach Bob Stoops said Monday. "Unfortunate any time any of that happens. There is always a lot of rough and tough play inside. Nobody here's whining about it." (Dallas Morning News)

Stoops thanks many others for 100th win: "There's been a ton of people responsible for it," Coach Bob Stoops said. "My great administration, great assistant coaches who have been fabulous to work with, a bunch of great young men we get to see who work so hard. Bradford leads OU with 6 TDs against Washington

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Sooner dominate Washington 55-14; Stoops earns 100th career win: Sam Bradford threw for five more touchdowns. No. 3 Oklahoma again reached half-a-hundred points. The Sooners won big -- again. So why was Bob Stoops posing for a postgame picture in front of the scoreboard for a University of Oklahoma police officer? Because he had his 100th coaching win with the Sooners. And, they weren't in Norman.Bradford completed 18 of 21 passes for 304 yards, matched his career high with five touchdowns and ran for a sixth score to lead the Sooners easily past Washington 55-14 on Saturday night. R.J. Washington to play soon

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Washington expected to play: Defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said that freshman defensive end R.J. Washington likely will play for the first time this season Saturday against Washington. "We're expecting to see him this week," Wilson said. "He's had a really good week of practice." The Sooners have lost two defensive ends since the season started, prompting the OU coaches to consider pulling Washington out of redshirt. First, senior John Williams left the team. Then, redshirt freshman Frank Alexander was stabbed in the arm during a party and is not expected back until TCU in two weeks at the earliest. "We just need to keep getting R.J. reps, and if we do, I'll believe he'll really pay off for us later in the season," Wilson said. Washington was considered the gem of the 2008 recruiting class after being rated by many as the top high school defensive end in the nation. (The Oklahoman)

Sooner Great Passes Away

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

OU Great Eddie Crowder passes away at 77: Eddie Crowder, the All-American quarterback who lent his own brand of Sooner magic to the Bud Wilkinson era and later helped Colorado to new heights as football coach and athletic director, died late Tuesday at 77. Crowder had fought a blood disorder the last few months, and the Boulder Daily Camera reported he was weakened recently by a fall in his Boulder, Colo., home. "God almighty," a shaken Jimmy Harris said when informed that the quarterback who preceded him under Wilkinson had died. "Nobody was better than Eddie Crowder, I've got to say." Reactions from Sooners of Crowder's era — he backed up Claude Arnold on OU's 1950 national championship team before starting in '51 and '52, and he returned to OU to coach under Wilkinson from 1956-62 — indicate that sufficed on and off the field. "Eddie was known as 'The Magician' because he perfected those fakes to Billy Vessels and Buck McPhail," said Jay O'Neal, who platooned with Harris as quarterback from 1954-56. "It was something else." "He was one heck of a quarterback and an excellent leader. Eddie was so confident," said J.D. Roberts, who played with Crowder before going on to win the Outland Trophy in '53. "We knew that when he called a play, it was the only one to run." (Tulsa World)

OU's Jermaine Gresham honored

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Jermaine Gresham named Mackey Tight End of the Week: Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma has been named John Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The Big 12 Conference junior recorded seven receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns as Oklahoma defeated Cincinnati 52-26. Other candidates considered for this week's Tight End of the Week include Dennis Pitta of BYU and D.J. Williams of Arkansas. The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. (SoonerSports PR)

Moreland to keep punting duties: Bishop Kelley walk-on (Matt Moreland) appears in no danger of losing his job. "They're adequate," coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday of Moreland's kicks. "I think he's capable of more. I'm still hopeful, as he keeps ironing out his technique, that that will happen. But I don't see anyone else kicking them out all the time." Some have suggested that Stoops try Tress Way, the Union freshman who the Sooners hope to redshirt. "Tress does well, but not any better. At this point, anyway," Stoops said. "I'm awfully excited about Tress. But at this point, it isn't something I feel is going to be an improvement." (Tulsa World)

R.J. Washington to see action soon? Oklahoma standout freshman R.J. Washington, a Keller Fossil Ridge graduate, could join the defensive end rotation, coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday. Stoops said Washington has progressed. "We're working more and more in practice and getting close to putting R.J. Washington in there as well just because he has shown the ability and the consistency that we need," Stoops said. "So that's exciting, too." (Dallas Morning News)

Alexander still recovering

Oklahoma Football Articles and Notes

Frank Alexander still recovering after stabbing: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops still doesn't have a timetable for freshman defensive end Frank Alexander to return to the field. Alexander was stabbed in during an incident at a Norman night club Aug. 31. His right arm was injured and he's been wearing a medical brace since. "He's improving, but we still have to wait week to week to see how far along his muscle is," Stoops said. Stoops said it's very doubtful Alexander will be back for this week's game at Washington. (Norman Transcript)

Sam Bradford nominated for AT&Ts All-American player of the Week: Quarterback Sam Bradford is one of four nominees for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week award. Sam Bradford named QB of the Week

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Bradford named Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week: The Davey O'Brien Foundation has named Sam Bradford of the University of Oklahoma the O'Brien Quarterback of the Week for week two. The sophomore sign caller led the Sooners in a 52-26 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday. "Sam was fantastic at the line of scrimmage," head coach Bob Stoops said in postgame comments. "Sam's such a good decision-maker. You have confidence to do whatever you want to do. I thought he threw the ball incredibly well." Bradford's performance included a career-best 395 yards and five touchdowns, extending the Sooners' home winning streak to the nation's longest at 20 games. The performance marked Bradford's third career 300-yard passing game while his 29 completions also registered as a career high. Bradford took over the starting duties in 2007 and set the NCAA freshman record for touchdown passes with 36. He also led the nation with a passing efficiency rating of 176.53. Coach Stoops avoids Pac-10 officiating questions

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Coach Bob Stoops on Pac-10 officiating: Coach Stoops today, commented on last weekend's Pac-10 officials controversial call. "Hey, that's the way it is," Sooners' Coach Bob Stoops said on Monday's Big 12 coaches' conference call, "so we're going to go play and hopefully play as well as we can." Asked if Stoops even saw the play in question? "I did," Stoops said. "But for me to comment on it wouldn't be appropriate." (LA Times) Pac-10 Conference officiating crew will work Saturday's game against Washington.

Stoops dismisses claims: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he saw nothing on tape that would warrant postgame comments criticizing the Sooners' conduct Saturday in a fourth-quarter pileup that resulted in an injury to Cincinnati quarterback Dustin Grutza."Heck, no," Stoops said Sunday. "Absolutely not." Stoops said he saw nothing out of the ordinary."Our guys did what any other guy does, just trying to get a sack," Stoops said. "Unfortunately two guys [were] at him and it ended up, as they're taking him to the ground, his foot was caught, I guess."There was nothing that would have indicated [anything unnecessary]." Know the Bearcats

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Last week: Cincinnati Bearcats defeated Eastern Kentucky 40-7. UC held Eastern Kentucky scoreless in the first half.

Returning starters: Cincinnati returns 16 starters, including all-Americans Mike Mickens, Terrill Byrd, and Kevin Huber.

Interesting tidbit: Cincinnati has never defeated a team in the top 5.

Team connections: There are no Oklahomans on the Cincinnati roster. The lone Ohioan on the OU roster is Branndon Braxton, an offensive tackle from Youngstown (Ursuline HS). Though, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is from Youngstown, Ohio, and offensive line coach James Patton is from Lafayette.

Bearcats Head Coach Kelly says CU needs at least 3 TDs: "I don't think this is a 7-3 game," Kelly said. "We've got to be in the 20s. We’ve got to have at least three scores on the board to give ourselves a fighting chance. "I don't expect them to play their worst game of the year and turn the ball over. We’re assuming that they're going to play well and that we're going to play well. If that's the case and it’s two football teams that are playing well, it's going to get into that range where you’re going to need three scores." (Cincinnati Enquirer)

"I'm from Ohio, and I know they have a great program," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "They don't win 10 games like they did last year and not be very good." Cincy to receive 300k payout to play OU

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Home-and-home series equals smaller payout for Cincinnati: Big schools like Oklahoma can negotiate a smaller payout if they are also willing to play a game at their opponents' stadiums, in what's called a home-and-home series, at some later date, athletic directors said. The Sooners will pay Texas Christian and Cincinnati $300,000 to participate in the first half of a home-and-home series this September, less than the $475,000 they paid Chattanooga for a home game on Aug. 30, according to the contracts. Few tickets remain for OU vs. Cincinnati

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Less than 100 tickets remain for OU vs. Cincinnati: Saturday's football game vs. Cincinnati is nearing a sellout with only approximately 100 tickets still available for purchase. The remaining tickets were returned by the Bearcats and are expected to go quickly. This is the only remaining opportunity to see the Sooners live in action this season as all other games are sold out. Tickets are $62 each. Kickoff for the game is set for 2:30 p.m. at Owen Field. Tickets are available online at SoonerSports.com or by calling (405) 325-2424 or (800) 456-GoOU. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the OU Athletics Ticket Office located under the Asp Avenue parking garage immediately west of the stadium. (SoonerSports PR)

Deep snapper Shaw to return soon? Stoops indicated Tuesday that last season's starting deep snapper, Derek Shaw, is close to returning from an Achilles injury. "He's better and better," Stoops said. "He's running faster and stronger now, and the whole thing is he's got to be able to cover to some degree. Not that he was our leading tackler on it, but he needs to get in someone's way. He's real close, so we'll just see as we go through the week." (The Oklahoman)

Center Jon Cooper on Bradford's improvements: "The most progress I've seen is him being a leader, and taking control of the offense completely," Cooper said. "That's what a quarterback should do. Last year, as a freshman, he was kind of quiet. He's not as quiet any more." (Star-Telegram)

A Norman Regional Hospital spokesman said Sunday night that Alexander, an 18-year-old freshman defensive end, had been treated and released from the facility. (Tulsa World)

Sims still not enrolled at OU: Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said junior-college safety David Sims has still not finished his academic work at Butte (Calif.) College and thus not able to enroll at OU yet. He'd better hurry. Sims has until the end of the next week to make it to Norman, else he won't be allowed to enroll at OU for this semester and practice with the football team this season. (The Oklahoman)

John Williams to quit team

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Stoops anticipates John Williams to quit team: John Williams' Oklahoma career football appears to be over. After practice Monday night, Bob Stoops confirmed that Williams, a former starting defensive end, will likely not return to the team after taking a recent leave of absence. "Right now John's just mentally having a hard time staying with it, and right now we don't anticipate him rejoining the team," Stoops said. (Tulsa World)

Alex Williams returns to LA to help family evacuate: Stoops said that redshirt freshman guard Alex Williams has gone back home to Louisiana to help his family evacuate from New Orleans, which is battling Hurricane Gustav. Williams is expected to be back with the team before Saturday's game with Cincinnati, Stoops said. (The Oklahoman)

Alexander injured in nightclub fight: Brenda Finkle of the Norman Regional Hospital confirmed that defensive end Frank Alexander was treated and released from the facility, after police responded to a large-scale fight at Sooner Knights at 2:32 a.m. Sunday. Asked about Alexander after practice Monday, OU coach Bob Stoops said: "There was an incident where a couple of our athletes, overall, were assaulted." According to a Norman Police Department release: "Numerous calls to the police department reported subjects fighting with knives, guns and tire irons. Prior to officers' arrival updated information reported that shots had been fired and that people had been shot and/or stabbed." (More at Tulsa World)

Austin Box likely to return against Cincinnati

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes

Bradford confident with OU's receivers: "I heard that comment (that Kelly's departure would hurt) all spring, and it really didn't make sense to me," Sam Bradford said. "We've got so many wide receivers that can make plays, and they proved it tonight." (Tulsa World)

Loadholt and Broyles suspended one game: [Phil] Loadholt's suspension may have stemmed from a June arrest for suspicion of DUI. OU coach Bob Stoops said Loadholt and Broyles were suspended for one game for "team reasons" and would be available to play Saturday against Cincinnati. (The Oklahoman)

Williams to play in '08? Defensive end John Williams also missed Saturday night's game, as he tries to determine if he's going to play the '08 season. Williams was awarded a sixth season of eligibility after the '07 season, much of which he missed after tearing his Achilles' tendon at Tulsa. (Tulsa World)

Granger dropped to No. 2 on depth chart due to back injury? Defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger did not start but played in the first quarter. Granger was sent home from the Fiesta Bowl after being charged with misdemeanor theft. Stoops, however, had said Granger's drop to No. 2 on the depth chart was related to a sore back that hampered him during August drills. Adrian Taylor started at tackle. (The Oklahoman)

Box likely to return against Cincinnati but where? Enid's Austin Box, who sat out Oklahoma's 57-2 rout of Chattanooga Saturday after having knee surgery earlier this month, should play this week against Cincinnati. "I anticipate he will," said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. Whether Box will return to his starting weakside linebacker spot is uncertain. Travis Lewis, who started in Box's place Saturday, led the Sooner defensive charge with four solo and two assisted tackles. "He's got to go back there and earn it," Venables said of Box. "We'll see how it goes." (Enid News and Eagle)

Second longest game in Sooner football history: Saturday's game, which spanned four hours and nine minutes, will go down as the second-longest in program history. The 2005 Baylor game, which went 4:12 through two overtimes, ranks as the longest. There have been five 4-hour games in OU history. The others: at Texas Tech in 2007 (4:03), Kansas State in 2000 (4:03) and Texas-El Paso in 2002 (4:00). (The Oklahoman)
