Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesJohnson sets receiving record: On an offense loaded with playmakers, Johnson was the most lethal Saturday, finishing with five catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns. The 206 yards set a Sooner record for receiving yards in a game, eclipsing Mark Clayton's 190 yards against Baylor in 2003. "Manny Johnson had such a huge game," coach Bob Stoops said. "I told him I thought that was one of the best performances we've had by a wide receiver here in 10 years." (The Oklahoman)Bradford's performance: Sam Bradford's career-best 411 passing yards is the third-most all-time by a Sooner quarterback. Oregon State stunned the visiting Trojans, 27-21, Thursday night for the first jaw-dropping upset of the season. The Beavers (2-2) turned the national title race on its ear and the reverberations can be heard in Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Missouri. The Big 12 has some great college QBs. The best is Sam Bradford. By far. It's not even close when you project to the NFL. He's tremendously accurate. Unbelieveable smarts and intelligence. He's tall. Makes great decisions. Excellent talent around him. He's going to have a decision to make in January. (Missouri's) Chase Daniel could win the Heisman, but he's not going to project highly in the NFL. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesTCU denies spying on OU: UPDATE: Oklahoma closed its preseason scrimmages this season. Well-connected Tulsa World columnist Dave Sittler linked the move to the Horned Frogs' 17-10 upset of OU in 2005. He suggested OU coach Bob Stoops closed the scrimmages because he felt "information some friends of the TCU program picked up watching the scrimmages" in 2005 helped the Horned Frogs beat the Sooners. Patterson raised the subject following his team's win over Stanford on Sept. 13 and addressed it again in a phone interview Sunday. The Horned Frogs taped the publicly available TV broadcast of Oklahoma's spring game, Patterson said, looking for schemes and personnel. "As far as us watching their practices, I took a little bit of offense that they would think that I would have someone go and spy on their practices, because, absolutely, that did not happen," Patterson said. "But did we watch the spring tapes as far as the spring game? We did, and I watched all summer." (More at Dallas Morning News)(9/22/08)UPDATE: Bob Stoops acknowledged Tuesday that he closed preseason scrimmages this season not because he was concerned about spies feeding information to this week's opponent, TCU, but because the Sooners were trying out a new offense. "I think it's pretty obvious why we closed practices," Stoops said during his weekly press luncheon. "I think our no-huddle offense has been pretty obvious we didn't want to let on how much we were using it, all our terminology at the line of scrimmage -- even defensively, our terminology going against it, all of that is pretty obvious why we didn't want anyone being at our practices."(Tulsa World)Labels: Bob Stoops, Oklahoma Sooners, Practice, TCU

The sophomore from Rosenberg, Texas, saw significant action in a 55-14 victory over Washington two weeks ago. (The Oklahoman)Stoops not ready to play R.J. Washington yet: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that he's not ready to burn a year of eligibility yet for freshman defensive end R.J. Washington. Stoops said Washington is still getting adjusted to the Sooners' defense. "If you just play a 4-3 and let those guys get wide and go, then he'd be in there," Stoops said. "There is just so much when you zone blitz. Who's dropping? Who's blitzing. Where you're blitzing. Is he twisting around somebody or is he going straight? R.J. is a bright, young guy who is doing great. We're probably just a little bit too complex in all that we ask these guys to do. We just fear that we're going to play him and, through the whole year, it's not going to be enough to warrant giving up his year." (Dallas Morning News) Stoops open to moving conference games earlier: [The] OU coach was asked if he would be willing to play a Big 12 Conference opponent over the first few weeks of a season, thereby bumping one of the nonconference games down the calendar a bit. "I'd be open to it," he said. "I see the benefits for your crowd and for media and fan interest and college football's interest, to have a conference game somewhere in there early." As to how soon into a season Stoops would feel comfortable playing a conference foe? "I'd prefer three (weeks)," he said. "Sometimes two's enough, depending on how many guys you have coming back." "DeMarcus and the doctors are uncertain. I know it's been reported that he's done for the year. That isn't the case yet. If he gets it pinned, he obviously will be. If he doesn't, he could be out four or five weeks. We'll just see." (Norman Transcript)OU's practice schedule: With an idle Saturday, the Sooners altered their practice schedule slightly this week. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesWashington expected to play: Defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said that freshman defensive end R.J. Washington likely will play for the first time this season Saturday against Washington. "We're expecting to see him this week," Wilson said. "He's had a really good week of practice." The Sooners have lost two defensive ends since the season started, prompting the OU coaches to consider pulling Washington out of redshirt. First, senior John Williams left the team. Then, redshirt freshman Frank Alexander was stabbed in the arm during a party and is not expected back until TCU in two weeks at the earliest. "We just need to keep getting R.J. reps, and if we do, I'll believe he'll really pay off for us later in the season," Wilson said. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOU Great Eddie Crowder passes away at 77: Eddie Crowder, the All-American quarterback who lent his own brand of Sooner magic to the Bud Wilkinson era and later helped Colorado to new heights as football coach and athletic director, died late Tuesday at 77. Crowder had fought a blood disorder the last few months, and the Boulder Daily Camera reported he was weakened recently by a fall in his Boulder, Colo., home. "God almighty," a shaken Jimmy Harris said when informed that the quarterback who preceded him under Wilkinson had died. "Nobody was better than Eddie Crowder, I've got to say." Reactions from Sooners of Crowder's era — he backed up Claude Arnold on OU's 1950 national championship team before starting in '51 and '52, and he returned to OU to coach under Wilkinson from 1956-62 — indicate that sufficed on and off the field. "Eddie was known as 'The Magician' because he perfected those fakes to Billy Vessels and Buck McPhail," said Jay O'Neal, who platooned with Harris as quarterback from 1954-56. "It was something else." "He was one heck of a quarterback and an excellent leader. Eddie was so confident," said J.D. Roberts, who played with Crowder before going on to win the Outland Trophy in '53. "We knew that when he called a play, it was the only one to run." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesJermaine Gresham named Mackey Tight End of the Week: Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma has been named John Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The Big 12 Conference junior recorded seven receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns as Oklahoma defeated Cincinnati 52-26. Other candidates considered for this week's Tight End of the Week include Dennis Pitta of BYU and D.J. Williams of Arkansas. The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. (SoonerSports PR)Moreland to keep punting duties: Bishop Kelley walk-on (Matt Moreland) appears in no danger of losing his job. "They're adequate," coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday of Moreland's kicks. "I think he's capable of more. I'm still hopeful, as he keeps ironing out his technique, that that will happen. But I don't see anyone else kicking them out all the time." Some have suggested that Stoops try Tress Way, the Union freshman who the Sooners hope to redshirt. "Tress does well, but not any better. At this point, anyway," Stoops said. "I'm awfully excited about Tress. But at this point, it isn't something I feel is going to be an improvement." (Tulsa World)R.J. Washington to see action soon? Oklahoma standout freshman R.J. Washington, a Keller Fossil Ridge graduate, could join the defensive end rotation, coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday. Stoops said Washington has progressed. "We're working more and more in practice and getting close to putting R.J. Washington in there as well just because he has shown the ability and the consistency that we need," Stoops said. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesStoops anticipates John Williams to quit team: John Williams' Oklahoma career football appears to be over. After practice Monday night, Bob Stoops confirmed that Williams, a former starting defensive end, will likely not return to the team after taking a recent leave of absence. "Right now John's just mentally having a hard time staying with it, and right now we don't anticipate him rejoining the team," Stoops said. (Tulsa World)Alex Williams returns to LA to help family evacuate: Stoops said that redshirt freshman guard Alex Williams has gone back home to Louisiana to help his family evacuate from New Orleans, which is battling Hurricane Gustav. Williams is expected to be back with the team before Saturday's game with Cincinnati, Stoops said. (The Oklahoman)Alexander injured in nightclub fight: Brenda Finkle of the Norman Regional Hospital confirmed that defensive end Frank Alexander was treated and released from the facility, after police responded to a large-scale fight at Sooner Knights at 2:32 a.m. Sunday. Asked about Alexander after practice Monday, OU coach Bob Stoops said: "There was an incident where a couple of our athletes, overall, were assaulted." According to a Norman Police Department release: "Numerous calls to the police department reported subjects fighting with knives, guns and tire irons. Prior to officers' arrival updated information reported that shots had been fired and that people had been shot and/or stabbed." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesBradford confident with OU's receivers: "I heard that comment (that Kelly's departure would hurt) all spring, and it really didn't make sense to me," Sam Bradford said. "We've got so many wide receivers that can make plays, and they proved it tonight." (Tulsa World)Loadholt and Broyles suspended one game: [Phil] Loadholt's suspension may have stemmed from a June arrest for suspicion of DUI. OU coach Bob Stoops said Loadholt and Broyles were suspended for one game for "team reasons" and would be available to play Saturday against Cincinnati. (The Oklahoman)Williams to play in '08? Defensive end John Williams also missed Saturday night's game, as he tries to determine if he's going to play the '08 season. Williams was awarded a sixth season of eligibility after the '07 season, much of which he missed after tearing his Achilles' tendon at Tulsa. (Tulsa World)Granger dropped to No. 2 on depth chart due to back injury? Defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger did not start but played in the first quarter. Granger was sent home from the Fiesta Bowl after being charged with misdemeanor theft. Stoops, however, had said Granger's drop to No. 2 on the depth chart was related to a sore back that hampered him during August drills. Adrian Taylor started at tackle. (The Oklahoman)Box likely to return against Cincinnati but where? Enid's Austin Box, who sat out Oklahoma's 57-2 rout of Chattanooga Saturday after having knee surgery earlier this month, should play this week against Cincinnati. "I anticipate he will," said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. Whether Box will return to his starting weakside linebacker spot is uncertain. Travis Lewis, who started in Box's place Saturday, led the Sooner defensive charge with four solo and two assisted tackles. "He's got to go back there and earn it," Venables said of Box. "We'll see how it goes." (Enid News and Eagle)Second longest game in Sooner football history: Saturday's game, which spanned four hours and nine minutes, will go down as the second-longest in program history. The 2005 Baylor game, which went 4:12 through two overtimes, ranks as the longest. There have been five 4-hour games in OU history. The others: at Texas Tech in 2007 (4:03), Kansas State in 2000 (4:03) and Texas-El Paso in 2002 (4:00).
