Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesKeith Nichol transferring to Michigan State: Keith Nichol is going home. The former Oklahoma quarterback announced Tuesday that he is transferring to Michigan State, an hour's drive away from where he attended high school. After sitting out next season, Nichol will have three years of eligibility remaining at Michigan State. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesNichol undecided on transfer school: [Keith] Nichol, a former Lowell star, MSU verbal commitment and Oklahoma quarterback, is still considering a number of schools less than two weeks after deciding to transfer from Oklahoma. His father, Gary Nichol, said Monday that the list consists of MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Louisville, Cincinnati, Arizona State and New Mexico State.Keith's intent, Gary said, is to make a decision and enroll in time to fully take part in summer workouts. Every team's schedule is different, but in MSU's case, the timetable is less than two weeks."Wherever he ends up, he's gonna land on his feet," Gary Nichol said of his son, "and he's gonna have fun playing football again." Nichol and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops split amicably on May 9 with "a hug and a handshake" and a Stoops offer to leave the door open if Keith decided to come back, Gary said. "A decision definitely hasn't been made yet," Gary Nichol said Monday. (Lansing State Journal)Eric Bassey Excited for Move: ST. Louis Rams.comLabels: Keith Nichol, Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesJosh Jarboe HS coach defends player: Football coach Ray Bonner still can't believe what transpired March 6. Josh Jarboe, one of his favorite players, was arrested at Cedar Grove High School, accused of bringing a stolen gun to school. Now Jarboe faces two felony gun charges in DeKalb County, Ga., and the possibility of losing his football scholarship to Oklahoma. "I'm so frustrated right now because he is a really good kid," Bonner said. "To paint that kid as an outlaw, that's not right." "It happens so frequently in schools today that you don't have to be the person doing anything," Bonner said. "You can be around a person with a gun and it's like you have it." Said Avery, "Josh learned a valuable lesson. Be careful who you hang around." Sooner coach Bob Stoops has declined to comment on the case. But according to the OU Board of Regents policy, no student-athlete charged with a crime can participate on a Sooner athletic team while the charges are still pending. Still, Jarboe is finishing up the last two classes he needs for his high school degree online with hopes that he'll somehow make it to Norman. "He feels like he let his family down, his teammates down," Bonner said. "But he refuses to let any of this get the best of him. He's working on his classes and going to the gym. I know he's learned from this. "I just pray and hope it's done the right way. That they don't destroy a person just to destroy a person. Because Josh really is a great kid." (The Oklahoman)Bishop McGuinness' Ikard offered OU scholarship: Bishop McGuinness tight end Gabe Ikard received an offer from Oklahoma after Sooners assistant coach Kevin Wilson attended the Irish's intersquad scrimmage Friday. "It's very exciting," said Ikard, who has been a standout for the Irish on the football field and basketball court since his freshman year. "It's something I've wanted since I was a kid." A fan of the Sooners since childhood, Ikard said the offer meant a lot, but the senior-to-be will take his time and explore all his options before committing to a school. "I plan to take my visits then make a decision," Ikard said. "I'm not leaning (toward any school) right now." (The Oklahoman) BCS at 10: 2. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesBackup QB Keith Nichol to transfer after all: Keith Nichol's career at Oklahoma is over. Nichol, the former all-state quarterback at Lowell High School, announced Friday morning that he has left the University of Oklahoma after just one year. He completed his final exams this week and drove back to West Michigan on Friday. Nichol, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound signal caller, played in three games with the Sooners. He rushed for eight yards and completed his only pass in his debut against North Texas. He also saw action against Utah State and Tulsa. He finished his freshman season having completed 2 of 7 passes for a total of 15 yards. He rushed for 13 yards on three carries. "It was a really tough decision," Nichol said Friday morning. "I love OU and the people there, but you can't stay there for the people. I had to leave there for me. I look at it as a missed opportunity, but not everything works out the way you plan. "This has been on my mind for a while. When it came down to it, I couldn't go to practice if I was thinking about transferring. I had to make a decision and go with it." If he transfers to another Division I school, Nichol will have to sit out the 2008 season. He could practice with a team next season but would not be eligible to play Division I football until the 2009 season. He said Friday that he plans to take a long look at all of his options. "I am looking to transfer to a school with a good situation, one that fits my style. I am going to look for the best opportunity," Nichol said. "Maybe I cheated myself in the recruiting process the first time. "I didn't look at all of my options completely," he said. "Now I am trying to look at everything. Having been involved in big-time college football for a while now, I understand things better." Nichol, who was a marketing major at Oklahoma, was waiting until exams were finished and he returned home before contacting other college football programs. (Grand Rapids Press)

Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOklahoma football team above the national average in Academic Progress Rate: Three Big 12 programs and two teams at Texas State are losing scholarships after being hit Tuesday with NCAA penalties for poor academic performance. The Texas football team had an APR of 942, down from 944 a year ago but tied with Oklahoma for tops in the Big 12. Nationwide, the UT team ranked above average. The APR is designed to track student-athletes' progress toward graduation. A perfect score of 1,000 would mean that all team members are academically eligible. Students who lose eligibility count against a team, as do those who transfer in poor academic standing. Three Big 12 programs that scored below 880 -- Iowa State basketball (861), Texas Tech baseball (864) and Oklahoma State baseball (877) -- were not penalized. Oklahoma had three teams score below 915 -- baseball, men's basketball and golf -- but was not penalized in any sport.
