Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesFormer Sooners' coach Mike Stoops hospitalized: Before kickoff, Bob Stoops acknowledged he was concerned about the health of his younger brother. Arizona coach Mike Stoops, who once served as OU’s defensive coordinator, was hospitalized Friday in Tucson for what was diagnosed as a problem with kidney stones. Stoops was scheduled to be on the sideline Saturday night when Arizona hosts Washington State. Bob Stoops said he didn’t know about his brother’s medical problem until after he read about it in a newspaper. "I called him, and he said he’s been in a lot of pain," Bob Stoops said. (Tulsa World)Stoops on OU's loss: "They outplayed us and outcoached us in the second half," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "It's disappointing. We're not a very smart football team right now." (Dallas Morning News)Reynolds expected to have X-rays today: Oklahoma linebacker Ryan Reynolds played most of the fourth quarter with numbness in his right shoulder after getting hit with a helmet Saturday. "I'll get X-rays (Sunday),” Reynolds said. "Hopefully nothing's wrong with it. It just went numb, couldn't move it.” At times, Reynolds struggled to lift his arm and trainers inspected the shoulder nearly every time he came off the field. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesColorado stuns Oklahoma in final second field goal: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops envisioned it going down to the wire. Colorado Dan Hawkins had a hunch his team would pull off the big upset. Both coaches turned out to be correct and Hawkins' Buffaloes dealt a serious blow to the Sooners national title hopes when Kevin Eberhart kicked a career-long 45-yard field goal as time expired to send Colorado past No. 3 Oklahoma 27-24 on Saturday. "I told them all week they're going to win the game," Hawkins said. "Not because I'm 'The Swami.' I've done this for 25 years and you just know. You know when your team's ready, you know when you're poised." (AP/SoonerSports.com - Stats)

The Sooners' only loss during that span came in 1999 – Stoops' first season at OU – in a 34-30 defeat at Notre Dame. Stoops said he wouldn't bring up to his players the possibility of looking at Texas. "We don't have to. They know going to Colorado is tough," Stoops said. "There isn't any of that, whatsoever. Cast allows McCoy to play despite broken hand: Despite breaking a bone in his right hand, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been practicing and playing thanks to a cast he only wears on the field. In games, McCoy can't grab with his right hand, but he can move his wrist thanks to adjustments made to the cast. He can also take the cast off before and after practice. During the day, he tapes his middle and ring finger together to support the broken fourth metacarpal bone he suffered against Miami. Williams may return in 2008 with medical hardship: Stoops said Williams had successful surgery Tuesday to repair his Achillies' tendon and could be back next year if the NCAA grants him another year of eligibility. Williams tore an ACL in the 2005 season opener against TCU and missed the rest of the season. (Dallas Morning News)Stoops used fake calls: Bob Stoops wore a defensive-call wristband at Tulsa and, along with Brent Venables, signaled calls to the defense -- some real, some not.Stoops said he did so "strictly because we didn't want [Tulsa coaches] to get our signals."Deciphering a defensive call has become easier for offensive coaches, and quarterbacks frequently look to their sidelines near the end of the play clock to verify calls or switch plays after offensive staffs have checked out the defensive sets. (Star-Telegram)Stoops on rather he'd coach his sons: Stoops, who has two sons, said he isn’t sure whether he would like to coach either of them, but admires what he sees at Colorado. "I think it would be tough, just with all the scrutiny and opinion out there," Stoops said. "But just knowing Dan a little bit and being around him, I'm sure he'll handle it as well as anyone can. I think it's great to have a chance to see your son every day, and to be in competitive situations with him would be neat." (Norman Transcript)Brown recovering after head injury: Stoops said Tuesday that sophomore running back Chris Brown is "looking better and better" after being hit in the head late in the Sooners' win Friday at Tulsa. "His checkups Sunday and Monday were really good. So we expect him to be able to play [Saturday at Colorado]," Stoops said. "I'm not saying he is yet, that's something they'll check by the end of the week. "Nothing's easy at all, but I got in that rhythm early and I did feel I got a lot of confidence that way and saw things very clearly," said Bradford, a redshirt freshman who entered the game as the nation's top-rated passer. "I felt really comfortable today." Bradford completed his first 11 passes -- including two for scores -- to reach 21 straight passes without an incompletion. He'd already had a school-record run of 22 straight completions that ended in the Sooners' 51-13 rout of Miami last week. Malcolm Kelly caught his sixth and seventh touchdown passes of the season and Allen Patrick showed his sprained ankle has fully healed with a 69-yard TD sprint as the Sooners (3-0) piled it on again. Sooners' WR bunch shines: While you're at it, keep an eye on OU's wide receivers this afternoon, and not just after they've caught passes. "I don't think since I've been here I've seen that group play that hard," Sooner wide receivers coach Kevin Sumlin said of last week's victory over Miami. "They went after it both run and pass. It makes you feel good as coaches because we've been harping on that." The willingness of Malcolm Kelly, Manuel Johnson and Juaquin Iglesias to block is especially crucial on the bubble screen passes Sam Bradford likes to throw, and when tailback DeMarco Murray turns a run outside, as he is prone to do. (Tulsa World)
Oklahoma Connection: Utah State coach Brent Guy graduated from Oklahoma State in 1983 and served as graduate assistant and linebackers coach at OSU. But he has downplayed the significance of returning to Oklahoma Saturday. “That’s not what the game is about,” he said. “The game will be about our guys going in there and playing against a team that’s ranked in the top three in the country." (Norman Transcript) Box may be redshirted? Even though coach Bob Stoops said linebacker Austin Box would be one of three freshmen to play this season, Box has yet to step on the field, suggesting he will redshirt this year. "I wasn't completely sold,” defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "He could play, but we're in a situation health-wise we don't have to do that. "In the end, I think he gets more value picking up that year down the road.” (NewsOK.com)

Updated: OU wants secondary violation dropped: As previously posted; After consulting with a fellow Big 12 Conference school, Oklahoma wants the NCAA to strike a self-reported secondary rules violation from its record. Oklahoma reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. The university's executive director of compliance, Jason Leonard, subsequently sent a letter to the NCAA asking to have that violation removed, according to documents obtained Friday through an open records request by The Associated Press. Leonard wrote that Oklahoma heard from compliance staff at Missouri after they'd read an AP story published June 12 detailing secondary violations that had been self-reported by Oklahoma. Leonard wrote that he was informed that Missouri – in a similar situation – had been told by a former NCAA official in 2005 that no secondary violation had occurred in that instance. (AP/Dallas Morning News) (8-11-07) Update 2: University of Oklahoma secondary violations removed: The Oklahoma football program had a self-reported secondary NCAA violation removed from its record, according to documents obtained Tuesday by The Oklahoman. Oklahoma originally reported that it had broken NCAA rules when it hung jerseys with three prospects' high school numbers in the Sooners' locker room when the recruits came to visit. In a letter dated July 18, NCAA Associate Director for Enforcement of Secondary Violations, Renee Gomila, wrote that "based upon additional information (OU) submitted, it was confirmed by membership services that under the specific facts of this case, no violation of NCAA legislation occurred inasmuch as personalized numbers and names were not placed on the jerseys displayed during the prospects' visits.” (NewsOK.com) McCoy suffers broken hand; unlikely to start against Utah State: Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy broke a bone in his right hand on Saturday against Miami but was able to practice Monday with a cast protecting the injury. He said the injury occurred during the Sooners goal-line stand that ultimately ended with a Hurricanes touchdown. McCoy said having a cast over four fingers does hinder his effectiveness, but doesn't actually hurt. "I'm working to get better every day so it won't slow me down," he said. OSU's Gundy favors ninth conference game; Stoops favors only if...: Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said Monday he would prefer to do away with the Big 12's divisional format and have each team play nine conference games instead of eight. Gundy said he proposed the change at the conference's spring meetings, but "everybody laughed at me." Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he would support adding a ninth game, but only if it meant eliminating the conference championship game and the North and South divisions. "That's the extra game maybe that everybody's looking for, I don't know," Stoops said. "That's not a bad idea, but I don't see how it would work with two divisions. Those other teams that do (play nine games) don't have divisions like we do." Under the nine-game format, Stoops didn't think it would be practical to have the top two teams in the division play a championship game when the Big Ten and Pac-10 don't have title games. "Now your BCS opportunities aren't real good if you're just going to take the two best teams in the championship game," Stoops said. "Your likelihood of getting two in any BCS games is pretty much out the window. I don't see financially why that would work." (AP/SI.com)Caleb may return this week? Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Caleb wasn't in pads for the Miami game due to knee injury. "He got a slight sprain on Thursday where a guy fell into him. It was kind of a freaky thing that happened to him late in the week," Stoops said. "We're hoping he'll be back this week. We'll see." Caleb is listed as a second-team wide receiver, but hasn't caught a pass this season. (Norman Transcript) Oklahoma-Utah State available on PPV: The Oklahoma-Utah State game on Saturday, Sept. 15 will be televised live on pay-per-view by Big 12 Special Order Sports, FSN Southwest's pay-per-view division. The game, which is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT, will be available on participating cable television systems in Oklahoma and Texas and nationwide to satellite dish customers. The suggested retail price is $29.95. A list of participating programming providers carrying the PPV telecast will be announced later this week. Fans should check with their local programming provider for price and availability in their area. The game is being televised on pay-per-view because it wasn't selected for over-the-air broadcast or cable television coverage. Under conference TV rules, games not picked up for regular television distribution can only be televised live on pay-per-view, giving fans the option to watch a game they otherwise wouldn't be able to see. Participating cable and satellite TV providers will offer the telecast to their customers on a designated pay-per-view channel. Bradford was the co-offensive player of the week in the conference, while Smith snared the same honor for defense. Bradford shared the offensive honor with Baylor quarteback Blake Szymanski, who had six TD passes against Rice. Bradford completed 19 of 25 passes for 205 yards in the Sooners' 51-13 win over Miami (Fla.). He has gone 40 of 48 for 568 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions through his first two games. Bradford's scoring strikes against the Hurricanes were from 23, 24, 6, 30, and 9 yards. Sam Bradford named Walter Camp player of the week: Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has been named the national offensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Foundation. Bradford was honored for his play in OU's 51-13 win over Miami. The redshirt freshman from Oklahoma City completed 19-of-25 passes for 205 yards and a school record five touchdowns (tied) with no interceptions in Oklahoma's convincing non-conference victory. The TD passes tied a record for the most ever allowed by Miami. Just one week earlier, the Hurricanes' defense picked off four passes in a win over Marshall. Three of Bradford's touchdown throws went to Malcolm Kelly from 23, 24 and 30 yards. He also threw a six-yarder to Jermaine Gresham and a nine-yarder to Dane Zaslaw. Bradford hit his first four passes of the game to extend his string of consecutive completions to 22, an OU record and just two shy of the NCAA mark. Sooners win big over Canes: By the time Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford threw his school record-tying fifth touchdown pass, the bad memories from past Miami games were long gone. Malcolm Kelly caught three of Bradford's TD passes and Reggie Smith returned a fumble for a score as the No. 5 Sooners rolled over Miami 51-13 in their first meeting since the Hurricanes swept three games in the 1980s. "That didn't matter," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "It makes for a good story, but that's a long time ago." (SoonerSports.com) Patrick early exit: Starting running back Allen Patrick came out of the game after the first two carries of the second half and never returned. Coach Bob Stoops said Patrick, a senior who missed last week's season opener against North Texas with a sprained right ankle, didn't return because he was experiencing some minor cramping. (Dallas Morning News) Moving Up: Malcolm Kelly's three touchdowns give him 17 for his career, tying Carrollton Creekview-ex Travis Wilson for second on OU's all-time career list. (Dallas Morning News) In the books: (Sam) Bradford's five TD passes against Miami tied the OU single game record. He became just the third Sooner to toss five touchdowns in a game. Jason White accomplished the feat three times, while Josh Heupel did it twice. Bradford was also just the second QB to throw for five TDs against the Hurricanes (Cade McNown, UCLA, 1998). Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Coach Randy Shannon not concerned about OU-Miami past: Coach Randy Shannon is taking a completely different approach. He could care less what the Miami teams he played on did to the Sooners two decades ago. "Those guys I played with, I love them, but I have to let those times go," Shannon said. "This is a new team, a new start, fresh faces. I mean, it ain't Barry Switzer. It ain't Jimmy Johnson. It's Randy Shannon and Bob Stoops. It ain't Troy Aikman and Jamelle Holieway. It ain't Steve Walsh in the game. "I don't mean any disrespect for what's happened in the past, but this is an ABC [TV] game. "I had committed to Oklahoma State when I was a senior in high school," Aikman said. "My second-to-last recruiting trip, I told Jimmy I was coming (to Miami), but I wanted to take the last trip of recruiting weekend to OU and see what it was all about. I did that and decided to go to Oklahoma. Broke my leg against Miami while Jimmy was coaching there. And then when I was transferring, Jimmy was recruiting me in Miami but I decided to go to UCLA. "(In 1989) I'm getting drafted by the Cowboys and I find out that 'some guy from Arkansas' (Jerry Jones) had bought the team from Bum Bright and was going to hire Jimmy Johnson as the head coach. Patrick will start Saturday and Chris Brown should play after missing the North Texas game due to a one-game suspension. "Like we planned all along, we want to rotate those guys in," Stoops said. "Give a guy a series here, give him a break here. If a guy's hot, stay with him a little longer." (Norman Transcript)
Gundy on D. Murray performance: "He's a terrific athlete," Oklahoma running backs coach Cale Gundy told The Post. "He can play cornerback, running back and wide receiver. I don't know how many touches a game we're going to get him, but we talk about that more than any other topic." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesMalcolm Kelly on Miami defense: "Yesterday I started watching film, and they have a lot of speed in their secondary," (Malcolm) Kelly said of the Hurricanes. "And a lot of talent. It's going to be exciting. It's going to be a challenge. "I still think in the end, I'll take our secondary any day," Kelly said. "I get good preparation all during the week going against Reggie (Smith), going against Marcus (Walker). On Saturday, it's going to be that same type of competition, so I'll be ready for it." (Tulsa World)OU's crowd no worry for 'Canes: Oklahoma drew 84,472 fans to its season-opening 79-10 victory against North Texas on Saturday, marking the football team's 50th consecutive sellout. If the same number of fans attending last week's opener show up to Memorial Stadium for Saturday's game against Miami, it will rank as the eighth-largest crowd ever to see a UM game. Miami is 8-2 all-time playing before the 10 largest audiences in school history. Each of those games has been played on the road or in a neutral site. UM coach Randy Shannon scoffed at the notion that his players will be affected by the crowd on Saturday, no matter how big it is. "It won't be a shock," Shannon said. "Some of these (UM players) are from Texas. They've played in big games before in Dallas (with) 30,000 or 40,000 fans screaming. Just because it's Oklahoma and there'll be 80,000 or 105,000 those fans won't make any difference between those yard lines. They won't." (Palm Beach Post)Shannon: No time to celebrate: Randy Shannon said he put his first victory as head coach of the Miami Hurricanes behind him in "two, maybe three” minutes. That's because he knew what was next, Shannon told the Miami Herald. "You can get Gatorade dumped on your head and (have) everybody in Miami patting you on the shoulder,” he said. "But you know what? It ain't going to ever help you win the game the next week against Oklahoma.” (NewsOK.com)
Miami's QB Freeman on OU-Miami: (Kirby Freeman) A native of Texas, this is the closest he will play to home this season, unless the Hurricanes play a bowl game in that area. "I'm jacked," said Freeman, who played at Brownwood High. "I'm excited. I've got plenty of people coming to the game." Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesVenables on Miami's QB Kirby Fressman: "Kirby is very fast and athletic,” (Brent) Venables said. "You'd much rather play a guy like Chris Simms back there who isn't comfortable running the ball.” (NewsOK.com)By the numbers: Eight OU players made their first career starts and 64 saw action. (Dallas Morning News)Bobby Jack Wright impressed with English: OU sacked the Mean Green QB six times. "Our pressure was good all night, especially from the defensive ends," Wright said. "Auston English, Alonzo Dotson, John Williams, they were all really active." Asked if English is the quickest defensive end Wright has seen in his nine years at OU, Wright wasn't ready to go that far. "I don't know that he's the quickest, but he's in that class with the Dan Codys and the Jonathan Jacksons," Wright said. "He really does have a great first step. (NewsOK.com)Brown, Patrick expected to play Miami: Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said (Allen) Patrick, Chris Brown and redshirt freshman DeMarco Murray would play at RB against Miami. (Dallas Morning News)Coach Stoops impression of Miami: "Just a good solid football team. As you watch them, like always, you see a lot of physical, good-looking players who play hard. A lot of speed and they're coached well. They're in position. Just what you usually see when you watch a good Miami team." (Palmbeachpost.com)
Coach Stoops on memories of past OU-Miami games: "I remember watching them back in the mid-80s. They were great teams with great players all over the place, great coaches. They were great games for sure. Both teams, between the two of them, there's not a lot of losses there." You'll be on the wrong end of one of these."(Star-Telegram)Franks Debut: Union redshirt freshman Dominique Franks made his OU debut Saturday night in relief of punt returner Reggie Smith. At the time, the score was 63-3. "I asked the officials,” Stoops said. "They said they agreed with me, but I didn't see them go do it. You just want to get it over with. It seemed like forever. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and NotesOU wins big against North Texas in opener: Sam Bradford's debut as Oklahoma's starting quarterback couldn't have looked much better if he had scripted it himself. In his first start, the redshirt freshman tied a record set by one Heisman Trophy winner and broke another set by a Heisman runner-up, throwing for 363 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 8 Sooners beat North Texas 79-10 Saturday night. "This really is what you dream about, coming out here and playing in front of 85,000 and getting a win like that," Bradford said. "There's not going to be many nights like this. You've got to take these. These are special." Freshman DeMarco Murray became the first Oklahoma player to score five touchdowns in his debut, and the Sooners showed no signs of a hangover following a stunning overtime loss to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and the loss of star tailback Adrian Peterson to the NFL. Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Store owner says no conspiracy theory in Broyles attempted theft: Ron Henderson, owner of the Mr. Shortstop where Broyles was arrested, distanced himself from the university when contacted Friday. "I've heard all these conspiracy theories that I'm a donor or supporter of the program. Nothing could be further from the truth," he said. "Other than I'm a general fan like everybody in Norman might be. I've never met Ryan Broyles, and don't know anything about him other than what I've read about his as a player. "I've never had a key to those pumps and I've been here 36 years. I'm totally amazed to find out something like this could happen. My real concern is who might have those keys or codes and how long this has been happening. We've had problems balancing our inventory and some irregularities the last two or three months. We thought the problems were leakage in the lines or tanks. We never dreamed it might be something like this." (Tulsa World)
