Callahan denies throat slashing gesture: Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said Monday that he didn't make a throat-slashing gesture while arguing with an official during the Cornhuskers' loss to Oklahoma. Callahan appeared livid after Kejuan Jones' 17-yard touchdown run that gave the Sooners a 31-17 lead in the fourth quarter Saturday. OU won 31-24. Callahan engaged in an animated discussion with referee Steve Usechek after the touchdown. The coach was arguing that Oklahoma should have been penalized for holding on the play. Videotape showed Callahan raising his right arm, index finger extended, and making a motion from left to right across his throat. The Big 12 Conference was reviewing the video Monday, spokesman Bob Burda said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. (News-Day)

Bedlam Kickoff Time Set: ABC has set the starting time for Oklahoma's game with Oklahoma State for 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 26. It will be the regular season finale for both teams. The Big 12 Conference's television partners are yet to complete their selections for the Nov. 12 games. ABC has placed a hold on both that game and the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State game for its 11 a.m., time slot. The decision as to which game ABC will choose will come on Sunday. If the OU-A&M game is not selected by ABC, it could go to FSN for a 6 p.m., kickoff. FSN, which must wait for ABC's selection before it can announce its own, will choose either that game or Colorado-Iowa State. Venables Proud of Defense: Defensive coordinator Brent Venables' mother passed away Tuesday night, and several players said they wanted to get a win in honor of his loss. The Sooners had nine sacks and allowed just 283 yards. "It's almost overwhelming the support you sometimes don't realize you have until you're faced with some tough situations," Venables said. Dream came true: Senior cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha said he dreamed of making an interception against Nebraska and returning it for a touchdown. That's exactly what he did in the second quarter. Onyenegecha jumped in front of Zac Taylor's pass and dashed 63 yards to give OU a 21-3 lead. "Before the play, I told [safety Reggie Smith] that I was going to jump into the flats," Onyenegecha said. "I jumped it, and he threw it right there. I focused on watching the ball into my hands, and I caught it." (Dallas Morning News)

Peterson the Difference Maker: "You can't put what he means to us in words," OU fullback J.D. Runnels said. "You can tell the difference between Adrian with the ankle (injury) and plain old Adrian." Plain old Adrian is the type of player capable of breaking big runs on any play. The Sooners had been without it in their previous three games. They'd also lacked the ability to wear down a defense. Peterson brought that to the table Saturday, too. "He's a hard man to take down," Nebraska defensive lineman Jay Moore said. "I had him a couple times and he's strong. Oklahoma defeats Neb. 31-24: Adrian Peterson ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns and Oklahoma held off Nebraska's comeback bid to win 31-24 Saturday, giving the Cornhuskers back-to-back home losses in the same season for the first time since 1968. Peterson, coming off an ankle injury that limited him for a month, scored a 36-yard touchdown on his first carry. He added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter as Oklahoma broke out to a 24-3 lead. Nebraska put together two straight TD drives in the second half to pull within a touchdown before the Sooners escaped with their first win in Lincoln since 1987. The Huskers, who lost 34-31 to Texas Tech here on Oct. 8, dropped consecutive home games for the first time since losing three in a row 37 years ago. Oklahoma (5-3, 4-1 Big 12) won its third straight and extended its regular-season winning streak over North Division opponents to 12. No change for Baker: Sophomore free safety Lewis Baker was responsible for Baylor's late, long touchdown pass last week. But coaches said Baker has been playing well and that they don't anticipate a change at the position. "Lewis has been playing awfully good," coach Bob Stoops said. "He understands the mistake he made. It's just a situation we've got to learn from, and hopefully not (have) happen again." Baker, a converted linebacker, started the first two games of the season at strong safety. He has started the last two at free safety. Co-defensive coordinator Bobby Jack Wright, who coaches the secondary, said Baker got caught too close to the line of scrimmage while disguising a pass coverage, and wasn't able to get back to his deep position in time. Change in Surface: Saturday's game will mark the first time this season Oklahoma has played on an artificial surface. Sad news: GNEXTINC.com thoughts and prayers are with Brent Venables & Venables family. Venables's mother, Nancy Schumaker, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. She was 58. Funeral arrangements for Nancy Schumaker were pending Wednesday. Venables plans to coach on Saturday at Nebraska.

No regret for Neb. Quarterback and Norman native: Oklahoma only called a time or two, maybe talked to Zac Taylor at summer camps, and then it wasn't long before the realist in Taylor took over. The Sooners weren't too interested in the quarterback even though he was right there in their back yard. And Taylor, although OU football was all he had ever known, was OK with it. Peterson says he's ready to go: Running back Adrian Peterson said he will be ready to play this week against Nebraska after sitting out Saturday against Baylor in hopes of finally getting over a sprained ankle. In his first public comments in weeks, Peterson said he was happy to see Jacob Gutierrez run for 173 yards as the Sooners won in double-overtime. But Peterson made it clear he's itching to get back on the field. "Sitting down was the best thing for me instead of going out there and trying and suffering another injury or something like that," Peterson said after Monday's practice. "But when the game started, I couldn't believe that I couldn't get out there and play." (Dallas Morning News)

More on Wilson, and Hickson injuries: Wilson remains OU's leading receiver (19 catches for 241 yards) despite missing the last two games with an injured foot. However, the senior receiver said Monday that he feels good, and he should play Saturday at Nebraska. The prognosis for backup running back Donta Hickson isn't as good. Hickson, who has 115 yards rushing this season, injured an ankle last week in practice. He sat out the Baylor game and might have to miss the Nebraska game. Hickson did not practice Monday. Hartley Special Teams Player of the Week: Oklahoma's Garrett Hartley is the SBC Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. The sophomore kicker made all three of his field goal attempts, including a pressurized try at the end of the first overtime, to help the Sooners knock off Baylor, 37-30, in double overtime Saturday on Owen Field. It marks the second consecutive week that an OU player has received one of the weekly Big 12 awards. Rufus Alexander captured the defensive honor for his play against Kansas. Hartley's three field goal makes represented a career high. He was good on attempts from 32, 25 and 39 yards. The latter of those came at the end of the first overtime and forged a 30-30 tie. The kick also forced the second overtime period in which OU prevailed on a 21-yard pass from Rhett Bomar to Juaquin Inglesias. Hartley made the extra point after that play before Baylor's ensuing possession. Hartley made all three of his point after touchdown kicks and booted four touchbacks on kickoffs. Stoops hopes to have back his running backs: After Oklahoma's top three tailbacks on the depth chart -- Adrian Peterson, Kejuan Jones and Donta Hickson -- missed Saturday's game, OU coach Bob Stoops said Sunday he hoped to have all of them back for the Nebraska game. However, he said he can't be sure at this juncture. Peterson missed the game because of an ankle injury suffered on Oct. 1, Jones was suspended for what a source said was a curfew violation and Hickson sat out with an injured ankle. On Jones, Stoops said Sunday that the senior would be back playing this week. As for Hickson, Stoops said: "It's an ankle and we'll see (about his availability)." Sooners edge Bears: Rhett Bomar threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Juaquin Iglesias in the second overtime to lift Oklahoma to a 37-30 win Saturday night against Baylor and maintain the Sooners' perfect record in the series.The Bears' hopes for their first win against Oklahoma ended when Shawn Bell's fourth-down pass fell incomplete. The Sooners rushed out onto the field in jubilation, and Baylor players walked to the locker room with their helmets in their hands. The win moved the Sooners (4-3, 3-1 Big 12) above .500 for the first time this season and continued an undefeated streak against Baylor, which has lost all 15 games against Oklahoma in a series dating back to 1901. The Bears (4-3, 1-3) rallied from 11 points down to pull within two on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Bell to Dominique Zeigler with 1:17 left. Bell then scrambled for the 2-point conversion to tie it. A desperation pass by Bomar fell incomplete as time expired in regulation, and the teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime period. After consecutive runs by Jacob Gutierrez to start the second overtime, Bomar dropped back on third-and-6 and found Iglesias in the right corner of the end zone. The completion gave him a career-high 269 passing yards and the Sooners the win. With Adrian Peterson out with a sprained ankle and backup Kejuan Jones suspended, Gutierrez was forced to make his first start at tailback and had 173 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. (Yahoo! Baylor respects OU talent: The Sooners (3-3, 2-1 Big 12) have won all 14 meetings against the Bears (4-2, 1-2). But this is, without question, the closest Baylor has been to OU's level in years. OU Fans expect tighter security tomorrows game: As Oklahoma prepares to host Baylor in Big 12 football action this Saturday, fans planning to attend are reminded of procedures relating to their visits to Gaylord Family -- Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. As recommended in a recent letter from OU President David Boren to season ticket patrons, all those attending the game are encouraged to arrive early to allow for security checks at stadium gates. To expedite stadium entry, fans are encouraged to travel light. Only those bags or items required for medical or child care needs, a woman's small purse, and/or an empty, clear personal-sized container suitable for drinking water will be permitted. Prohibited items include all bags, backpacks, video cameras, large cases for binoculars or other items, fanny packs, and large purses ( larger than 10" by 10"). Security personnel will strictly enforce this ban on these items and patrons are not permitted to bring more than one acceptable bag into the stadium. The university also has discontinued pass outs for those individuals wishing to exit the stadium and return during the game. Only re-entry precipitated by an emergency will be considered. Fans that depart for emergency situations will only be allowed to re-enter with a pass out check and ticket. Those departing the stadium for any reason other than an emergency will not be permitted to re-enter. Peterson is wait and see game: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said a decision on Adrian Peterson availability for Baylor won't be made until Thursday. He wants to see how Peterson practices before fully evaluating his status. "And I'm not playing here with that," Stoops said. "I think it's been obvious, we've tried to play him. And like I said, when you get into game speed and really need to push off and make a game-type cut, when it comes to that, he has been a little more tender than he thought he would be. Stoops was asked if he was delaying the decision to make sure Baylor has to prepare for the Sooners with Peterson factoring into the gameplan. "(Baylor) would have to answer that," Stoops said. Rufus named Big XII Defensive Player of the Week: Oklahoma linebacker Rufus Alexander has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in OU's 19-3 win over Kansas, Saturday. The junior registered 10 tackles, three for losses, broke up one pass, was credited with one quarterback hurry and made an important interception during the game. The pick came in the third quarter when Alexander wrestled the ball away from Kansas' Derek Fine at the Sooner two yard line. The play prevented the Jayhawks from closing in on a touchdown that might have knotted the game at 10-10. Alexander helped key a defensive effort that stymied Kansas all night. The Jayhawks rushed 22 times for just 11 yards and gained only 86 yards through the air on 11 completions in 30 attempts with three interceptions. Alexander is Oklahoma's leader in tackles (53) and tackles for loss (10, tied with Dusty Dvoracek). He also has six pass deflections, five QB hurries, one sack, one fumble recovery and one interception. Instead of playing in an NFL venue, maybe Kansas should have moved Saturday's tilt to West Junior High School in Lawrence. Maybe there the Jayhawks' putrid offense wouldn't have felt so out of its element. One measly field goal. That's all Kansas could muster in a 19-3 loss to the Sooners at Arrowhead Stadium. Poisoned with four turnovers from quarterback Brian Luke, the Jayhawks' offense mustered just 106 total yards and failed to reach the end zone for the second consecutive game. Even worse was that the humiliating performance came before 54,109 fans who descended upon Arrowhead hoping to see the Jayhawks upset last year's national title game loser. The game was the first Kansas has ever played in the Kansas City Chiefs' facility. After the way the Jayhawks played Saturday, they may not get asked back. Peterson expected to play: OU All-American running back Adrian Peterson is expected to play after being limited to only 10 yards on three carries in last week's 45-12 loss to Texas because of a sprained right ankle. Bomar's father didn't mean anything negative: Jerry Bomar, the father of OU quarterback Rhett Bomar, said Wednesday he didn't intend to cast a "negative" light in comments he made in Wednesday's edition of the Tulsa World. Jerry Bomar was quoted as saying his son didn't get as many snaps during practices last season, last spring and last August as would have been necessary to facilitate his development. Rhett Bomar redshirted last season and ran the scout team, split snaps with Paul Thompson and Tommy Grady last spring, and with Thompson last August. Ingram says no excuses now: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has repeatedly said that his team has to play smarter, despite the mix of young and old and first-time starters. Senior linebacker and co-captain Clint Ingram has picked up the refrain, saying no excuses accepted anymore. "We're five games deep into the season," Ingram said. "So guys being immature or guys not having the experience of not being in those positions before -- I mean we can't keep giving guys a crutch by saying he hasn't seen that before or he's young. "If coaches feel good enough about you or have enough respect for you or faith in you to put you out there on the field, then you need to take it upon yourself to get better. If it's something you're not as good at as you think you should be, then you should go out of your way to overcome that. "It's time to get it." (Star Telegram)

On what the team needs to improve on against Kansas:
"With Kansas, we need to execute better. Going up to Arrowhead Stadium to play KU, we need to do our best to be as sharp as we can. That's the frustrating part for us. "It's one thing to give up plays and get beat when you're in position or when you execute properly. But it's another when you put yourself out of position and allow someone to convert on you and make a big play. That's what we're doing our best to correct. We need to do that this week, just to play smarter in some areas. "I still think we can play more physically, and we can be more disciplined in what we're asking players to do."

On whether he anticipated the struggles that the team is facing:
"I don't think that way, which you guys know. And I don't sit here and blow smoke either. I feel that we're better than where we're at right now or should have been by now. I didn't anticipate all that's happened and who we've missed. Again, I'm not making excuses, but I'm saying that I didn't anticipate all of that. But you play the hands you're dealt. "I felt like overall, coming into the year that we would've been stronger and better than we have been. You can name a bunch of reasons we haven't been. You can blame it on me. That's fine. But I'm not going to sit here and act like coming into the year, I didn't feel we'd be better than this. I did. But all we can do is try to improve from here."

On what it will take for the team to play harder:
"I think success and being sure of yourself and what you're doing contribute to that. I think we can. And that's what we're pushing for. But again, it goes with playing a little bit smarter and more physically. If guys are unsure of themselves, it's hard. But we've got to really be able to find that."

On running back Adrian Peterson's status:
"He's better than he was a week ago. He didn't practice yesterday. It will probably be a day-to-day thing this week on how much he gets and how much he practices. But he is further along than he was going into the game last week, so that's encouraging. All of the X-rays and MRI's have all ruled out anything major. All that our doctors can decipher from it is a mild high ankle sprain."

On whether losing so many players from the 2003 class has hurt the team:
"There's no question. I would say even further than that. It's any time players don't pan out, or they're not as productive as you hoped they would be or they don't work with the program. Some of those guys, with their production and what they've done, I'm sure it does hurt to a certain degree. "Other times, it's hard to argue with the guy. We had a couple of guys who were wonderful young men in great academic standing, but Adrian got to play, and they wanted to go somewhere where they could get on the field. It's hard to argue with that. "In the end, some are hurting us more than others. But it's not just the 2003 class. There's probably a certain number of guys from each class that adds up."

On quarterback Rhett Bomar's performance against Texas:
"He needs to improve. He definitely took a step backward in our last game with Texas. I think it was pretty obvious compared to how he played in the UCLA game and the K-State game. But we are still encouraged that he is very capable. For whatever reason, he wasn't as productive or consistent and didn't play like he's capable of in that game." Texas Rolls Oklahoma 45-12 in 100th annual Red River Shootout: For the past five years, Texas Coach Mack Brown viewed each loss against Oklahoma as a reflection of his own performance. But Saturday, when Brown's Longhorns finally ended a five-game losing streak in the 100th installment of the Red River Shootout, he repeatedly said the result was not about him. A joyous Brown and his players hoisted the Golden Hat Trophy in the middle of the Cotton Bowl field following a 45-12 rout of the Sooners before 75,452. Players urged Brown to wear the gilded cowboy hat. He eyed it but declined. Brown, the eighth-year Texas coach long criticized for not winning the big game despite an abundance of talent, refused to bask for long. Dallas Mayor confident about keeping OU-Texas in Cotton Bowl: Confident the city won't lose the Texas-Oklahoma football game, Dallas Mayor Laura Miller said Friday that voters could be presented with a bond referendum next year to help fund renovations of as much as $50 million to the decaying Cotton Bowl. Miller said a public bond is one of several financing options to spruce up the outdated stadium, which both schools insist must be upgraded to prevent the game from becoming a home-and-home series as early as 2008. Without committing to an exact price tag, Miller said planned upgrades could cost as much as $50 million. Miller said she would like the schools to make a new 10-year commitment to a renovated Cotton Bowl within the next three months. "It's one thing to say to the teams we're going to upgrade it,'' said Miller, who added that not all the funding would necessarily come from a bond. "It's another thing to actually have a bond that has been approved by the voters.'' Bomar remains calm: OU offensive coordinator Chuck Long said keeping redshirt freshman quarterback Rhett Bomar insulated from the hype that surrounds the OU-Texas game was part of preparation for the young QB this week. "We're in that dark (film) room all week long. We don't pay much attention to what's going on on the outside," said Long. "That’s all fun for everybody else, but we still have a football game to play. If you go in and say, 'Hey, this is a big game. It's the most important game of the year.' Royal would like to see game stay in Dallas: There's been much talk that the Red River Rivalry may move from the Cotton Bowl to Austin and Norman, Okla., after the 2007 season. But at least one famous Longhorn would love to see the Texas-Oklahoma game remain on neutral ground. "Personally, I wouldn't want to see it that way," said legendary Texas Coach Darrell Royal. Running the ball from Austin to Cotton Bowl to raise money: Wes Holzapfel, a member of the Navy ROTC unit at UT, said 49 people are running the game ball from Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin to the Cotton Bowl to raise money for the Red Cross. Peterson practices: Adrian Peterson practiced Wednesday, according to Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. Though Peterson's sprained right ankle was braced and heavily taped, he walked without a limp. Peterson looking good: Moments after security guards allowed reporters into OU's indoor practice facility, coach Bob Stoops hollered: "He's out there. I see you looking." As expected, running back Adrian Peterson returned to workouts Wednesday, Stoops said. Players are not allowed to speak to the media after Tuesday's practice, so Texas will have to discover how well Peterson's right ankle is feeling along with everyone else Saturday. "He looked good," Stoops said. "Did some things. Didn't push it. I'm not going to sit here and detail it for you. We'll give him more tomorrow." (Dallas Morning News)

No sign posted here: There'll be no anti-Longhorn sign by the interstate when the team bus leaves campus Friday. The OU Club of Austin was not allowed to post a message this year on the billboard-for-a-day sign on the upper deck of Interstate 35 north of the UT campus. Two years ago, the club rented the billboard to post a sign reading: "Avoid the rush. Pity UT now!" Last year brought "Burnt orange today. Toasted Brown tomorrow." This year's sign was to have said "Burnt orange is a condition, not a color," but sign owner Joe McKay wouldn't allow it, saying he feared a backlash from Longhorn fans. "I hate to turn down business --that's against my nature --but it's a business decision," McKay said. "I don't need to give people reasons not to do business with me." (Austin American Statesman)

No spy on Young: OU coaches do not seem willing to use a linebacker or a safety as a "spy" on Texas quarterback Vince Young because they say it would compromise the defense. "We can't have three guys spying for him and letting them [Texas] do whatever else they want," OU coach Bob Stoops said. The Sooners have three defensive ends, senior Calvin Thibodeaux, junior C.J. Ah You and redshirt freshman Alan Davis. They are primarily responsible for containing Young and keeping him in the pocket. Texas wants south end zone: Texas officials had hoped an agreement would start this year in which the home team's fans in the UT-Oklahoma series would sit in the south end of the Cotton Bowl – the end with the tunnel, which both teams use to enter and exit the field. But after UT waited for a response from Oklahoma so the new seating information could be forwarded to the ticket printer, OU officials balked, according to UT officials. The dispute over the seating surfaced after The Dallas Morning News asked Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds why OU fans always have been seated in the south end zone of the Cotton Bowl. Dodds said he had discussions earlier this year with Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione about allowing the home team – UT this season – to get those seats. Dodds declined to provide any other details of those conversations, adding that he and Castiglione have a good working relationship and Dodds wants to keep it that way. It's probably the fair thing to do, to flip the seating in the south end zone back and forth," Dodds said. "We think it ought to be flipped, with the control of the seating going to the home team. But Oklahoma doesn't want to do it." Castiglione could not be reached for comment. He was scheduled to be in meetings until 7 p.m. Wednesday and was then scheduled to leave for Dallas, according to OU spokesman Kenny Mossman. (Dallas Morning News)

The Governors making bet: The governors of Oklahoma and Texas are making their annual bet on the outcome of Saturday's Oklahoma-Texas football game. Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry and Texas Gov. Rick Perry are betting nonperishable food items. The food will be donated to a food bank helping evacuees from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Henry has faith in coach Bob Stoops and the Sooners. Perry predicts an end to OU's five-game winning streak in the series. (News 8)

Class of '03: OU has played plenty of youngsters this season. That’s in part because of the loss of all those seniors from 2004. It's also because the recruiting class of 2003 hasn't panned out. Just 10 players from that class remain on the team. Only one, punter Cody Freeby, is a starter. "It's not just that class," Stoops said. "It's overall. Stoops on moving Red River Shootout: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said it’s a decision that won't be made by the football program. "That is for our administration," Stoops said. "I understand my place and my place is to run our football team. If they say go play across the street, we'll go play across the street. If we go to Texas to play down in their stadium, we’ll play. If they come up here, we’ll play. "We'll do whatever is necessary and what we feel is appropriate and right for our programs. And I'm all for whatever (our administration feels) that is. Dvoracek on Texas Confidence: Word has filtered back to Norman that the Longhorns are feeling quite confident about snapping their five-game losing streak to OU. Dusty Dvoracek is one Sooner who doesn't blame the Longhorns for feeling that way. "There's no reason they shouldn't be confident," the senior defensive tackle said. Texas Travel Update: Football fans headed for the OU-Texas game this weekend won't have to worry about Interstate 35 in Oklahoma. Miles of construction near the Texas state line will be on hold, and all four lanes will be open, state officials said Tuesday. One reason is how much it would cost contractors in "lane rental," a penalty in the contract that takes effect Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and the weekend of the University of Oklahoma-University of Texas football game in Dallas. If even one lane were to remain closed this weekend, contractors would be charged $288,000. "That's an incentive to get the road open," said Mark Zishka, an Oklahoma Department of Transportation engineer. Transportation officials also were assured Tuesday by contractors that both lanes northbound and southbound in a bridge repair project north of Purcell will be open during the weekend. So although traffic will be heavy on I-35 in Oklahoma, it should be at full capacity. Now for the bad news. Interstate 35 East in Texas won't be. I-35E south of Lewisville, Texas, between Frankford Road and FM 3040 will have lane closures both northbound and southbound until 3:30 p.m. Saturday, said Bill Powell, spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation. Bush moves to center: OU offensive line coach Kevin Wilson isn't ruling out a chance center Chris Chester might play Saturday but he isn’t counting on it. "I know he wants to and he’s trying," Wilson said, "but we're preparing like he won't." Chester suffered a knee injury early in the second half against Kansas State. Chris Bush moved from right guard to center when Chester went down. J.D. Quinn moved to the right guard spot. (Norman Transcript)

Longhorn DE, Robison to play: Longhorns' defensive end Brian Robison said he will play after injuring a rib while chasing Missouri quarterback Brad Smith on Saturday. "I made a last-ditch effort to tackle him and landed on my side and dislocated one of my ribs,'' Robison said. "After I went to the sideline, I took a few deep breaths and it popped back into place." Robison did not play the rest of the game but expects to start against the Sooners. He is is off to a solid start this season, with 17 solo tackles that tie him for second on the team. Freshman Charles to Start for Texas: So much has been made about Mack Brown refusing to rely on freshmen against Oklahoma in the past that he jokingly said he might not start freshman tailback Jamaal Charles on Saturday. Brown did not start receivers Roy Williams and B.J. Johnson, running back Cedric Benson or running back/receiver Ramonce Taylor against OU in recent years. Texas looks to recapture Golden Hat: Shortly after predicting that the Longhorns would be leaving the Cotton Bowl in possession of the Golden Hat, defensive tackle Rod Wright stopped himself. "Do they still give that out?" Wright asked about the traveling trophy that goes to the winning team in the Red River Rivalry. "We've always been inside the locker room when the presentation's going on." Reassured that the trophy still exists, despite its five-year hiatus from Austin, Wright smiled. Switzer likes Texas's chances: Former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said Tuesday the team in the Texas-OU series who has "the best quarterbacking and talent" wins the game. So he thinks it's probably UT's turn to win this season, unless the Longhorns can't handle the pressure. "This year, Vincent Young has the best chance to win," said Switzer, who employed Mack Brown as his offensive coordinator at OU in 1984. "Last year, he didn't because Oklahoma had the Heisman Trophy winner in Jason White. "This year, Vincent Young is the best and has the best talent. Sooners slow start, hasn't slowed down recruiting: With Oklahoma sitting at an unnatural 2-2 and out of the Top 25, it's only natural for Sooner fans to worry. Not only about how this year's team will recover but also how the slow start will affect OU's recruiting. Worry not, Sooner fans. "From talking to kids, it hasn't hurt them at all," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree said. "It sounds like the Sooner coaching staff has done well with the top recruits. Those kids are still listing Oklahoma pretty high. The kids remember OU going to two straight national championship games more than anything else." That's not to say nothing has changed. "Oklahoma is going after offensive linemen hard," Crabtree said. "Be it high school or junior college linemen. With the loss of Akim Millington and Brandon Keith - they were counting on those guys - they need bodies. They've already offered two junior college guys." Coffeyville guard/tackle Brandon Walker and Butler County tackle Sherrone Moore recently received offers from the Sooners. And Jenks' offensive lineman Chase Beeler got long-awaited OU offers in recent weeks. There are 30 offensive linemen with OU offers, according to Rivals.com. Rivals' top-rated offensive lineman Andre Smith of Huffman, Ala. still lists the Sooners among the teams he's considering. (NewsOK.com)

Busy but fun week: Texas Coach Mack Brown said it has been his custom to try and get all of his media responsibilities taken care of early in the week when the team is preparing for a huge game -- Ohio State, Texas A&M, and this week, Oklahoma. When asked if the phone rings more on OU week, Brown said, "Yes it does and I don't answer it." Brown didn't indicate that this week increases the pressure to deliver a winning game plan. Oklahoma's Thompson hoped to lead Texas: Paul Thompson grew up in Leander, Texas, about 20 miles northwest of Austin. And having watched former Texas quarterback James Brown, Thompson thought he would one day lead the Longhorns. But UT coach Mack Brown would offer Thompson a scholarship only if the quarterback moved to receiver, a change the player resisted. So Thompson landed at Oklahoma, a school that was happy to let him run the offense. Thompson laughed at the irony now. The OU junior, who lost the starting quarterback job after the season opener, will line up at receiver Saturday against Brown and the Longhorns. "I just figured that Oklahoma was the best fit for me," Thompson said after being asked repeatedly about being recruited by UT. Peterson ankle is doing better: Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson's injured right ankle is on the mend after almost two days of rest. The sophomore did not practice Monday and wore a medical boot to protect the ankle. "It's better than it was (Sunday); it's improved," said OU coach Bob Stoops. "They're probably going to take that boot off tomorrow, and he'll probably be ready to go, hopefully, by Wednesday." (NewsOK.com)

Texas QB Young is "fearless": Coach Mack Brown reiterated Monday why the Longhorns belong to junior quarterback Vince Young. "Vince has absolutely no fear of failure. None," Brown said. "And the rest of the team feeds off it." Young said Monday he has yet to have the kind of game he'd like to against Oklahoma (one touchdown running, zero TD passes and five turnovers in two losses). Young said the last two years against OU, he was "trying to get by on physical ability." "Now I know the mental aspects of the game," Young said Monday. "Now, I walk to the line thinking about my protections, my progressions and what the defense is giving me presnap." Sooners react to explosion: U football players heard the explosion Saturday night when a 21-year-old OU student used a bomb to commit suicide within a few hundred yards of Owen Field. The incident occurred in the second quarter. "I heard it on the field, and I kind of looked around and I said, 'I don't think that was thunder,' said OU junior Paul Thompson. "Some guys were saying it was thunder, I said, 'No, it wasn't thunder-sounding to me.' I thought something had just happened in one of the chemistry (buildings), that something had blown up, but nothing serious. I didn't really hear much about it until the press conference afterward. "You never expect something like that to happen around here. It kind of opens your eyes to the kind of world we're living in, and that that's the kind of thing we've got to live with nowadays." Thompson said the explosion was the topic of the day Monday, more so than the Sooners' 43-21 win over K-State. "It was a big buzz around campus," he said. What would happen on season tickets if OU-Texas went home-home series: Questions would arise as to whether the game would be part of the schools' regular season-ticket package, and how many tickets the visiting team's fans would receive. Some have suggested as many as 20,000 tickets could be allocated for games in Norman and Austin. But that doesn't appear realistic. The Big 12 stipulates 4,000 tickets for visitors. OU allocates 5,000 to Oklahoma State each year. But 20,000? Which regular season-ticket holders would be left out? Castiglione didn't want to comment on the possible issues. But he acknowledged there would be "enormous implications to a change." At this point, only one thing appears certain: The game's future is uncertain. "The ball is in all three courts," (Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds) Dodds said. "People have to make their decisions independently. Oklahoma locker room re-energized: Offensive coordinator Chuck Long said the sense of accomplishment was something he hadn't seen in a few years. The success OU has experienced over the last five seasons has dulled the excitement that often comes with big victories. "It reminded of that 2000 year when we first started to get on a roll and each game was bigger and bigger," Long said. "The locker room was fun after those (games), the excitement of it. It's very much like that. "When you struggle and you have a moment like that, it makes it all worthwhile and you know you’re starting to reach them as a staff. OU's Texas game plan: Although Vince Young gets most the attention where Texas' offense is concerned, Venables said running back Jamaal Charles is definitely in OU's gameplan. Peterson to play Saturday: Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson should play Saturday against Texas despite missing the second half of the Kansas State game with a right ankle injury. The sophomore, who rushed for 51 yards before getting injured in the second quarter, will take several days off to rest. Coach Bob Stoops said Sunday that he expects Peterson to return to practice later this week. It's a rehabilitation schedule similar to the one doctors prescribed after Peterson first injured the ankle in the season opener against TCU. Peterson took the first part of the week off and then ripped off 220 rushing yards against Tulsa. "I think A.D. [Peterson] should be OK, from what I understand," Stoops said. (Dallas Morning News)

Texas wants more then to beat Oklahoma: Senior defensive tackle Rod Wright has always been one of the better consciences on the Texas team. He says the Longhorns are motivated more than ever to beat Oklahoma, but not for the reasons some might expect. Asked if he was fed up with losing to OU, which owns a five-game winning streak over UT, Wright said, "I've lost to them three times in a row, but it's not about us winning because I'm a senior and I'm sick of losing to them. "Our goal is to play in Reliant Stadium, win the Big 12 and go on to the Rose Bowl. To do those things, we have to beat OU. It's not about us dwelling on beating them because we lost to them three straight times." Wright said it's important to have the proper motivation. "You don't want to dwell in the past and the fact we're on a losing streak because this is a totally different team than years past with a totally different attitude." Wright said he thinks this year's game will be "less hyped" because OU has already lost two games. He said that would be a mistake. (Dallas Morning News)

Oklahoma Wins Easily: Adrian Peterson rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury in the second quarter, putting a damper on Oklahoma’s best offensive performance of the season and 43-21 victory over Kansas State on Saturday night. Kejuan Jones added two touchdown runs in relief of Peterson, and Rhett Bomar ran for one score and passed for another as Oklahoma (2-2, 1-0 Big 12 Conference) won its Big 12 opener for the sixth straight year. Peterson, the Heisman runner-up last year, left the game late in the second quarter and sat on a table on the sidelines as trainers worked on his right foot. He tried to stand once, but took a seat again as trainers continued to examine him. At halftime, he walked off the field on his own, but was limping noticeably. He returned to the sidelines in the second half, but did not play. The Sooners will face No. 2 Texas next Saturday in Dallas. (MSNBC.com)

One person was killed in an explosion in a traffic circle about 100 yards from a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night in what authorities were calling a suicide. "We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation," OU President David Boren said in a statement. The loud noise of the explosion could be heard inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where 84,000 people were watching the Oklahoma Sooners play Kansas State. Officers cordoned off an area west of the stadium after the explosion and nobody was allowed out of the stadium immediately after the blast, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m., about halftime of the game. People were allowed out about 30 minutes later. (USA Today)

ESPN Crew in Norman, taping Toby Keith: An ESPN crew was scheduled to visit the OU campus Friday to film a spot with country singer Toby Keith for the opening sequence of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show. In recent years, several Sooners have made appearances at the show, which is staged in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in early December. This is the first time for the country star, an avowed Sooner fan. Start with the offensive line. Branndon Braxton will start at right tackle, and George "Duke" Robinson should play a lot (and could start) at left guard. At receiver, Malcolm Kelly and Juaquin Iglesias might start and should see plenty of action. Nic Harris appears set to start at free safety, joining Reggie Smith to give OU two true freshmen at the safeties. Like everything else this year, the youth movement isn’t set in stone.
