(9/6) Bomar to Start, Millington returns, Player holds team meeting and more.

Oklahoma Football Notes and Articles

Bomar to Start vs. Tulsa: Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said after Monday's practice that redshirt freshman Rhett Bomar will start at quarterback for the Sooners this Saturday against Tulsa. Bomar gets the nod over junior Paul Thompson, who started the season opener against TCU. "We're going to give Rhett Bomar a chance to start and see where he takes it,” Stoops said. "By no means am I sitting here saying that Paul Thompson is responsible for the way we played Saturday. That's not the case. We had a lot of guys, mostly older guys, play as poorly as I have seen them play. We feel Rhett deserves the same opportunity that Paul had." Stoops did not elaborate on how playing time might be divided between the quarterbacks. Bomar got 10 of the team's 67 snaps last Saturday. He completed 2-of-5 passes for 19 yards and rushed two times for 15 yards, including a long of 28, the best rush by a Sooner on the afternoon. (SoonerSports.com)

Millington returns to team: A day after Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops had some strong words about the status of offensive lineman Akim Millington, who quit the team four days before the season opener, Millington was back on the practice field. "He's out here trying to earn his way back, but we'll see," Stoops said Monday. "He practiced today, but again, we’ll see where that goes." Millington was slated to start at right tackle before abruptly leaving the team. When asked about Millington's return Sunday afternoon, Stoops said: "It's not something I said I'd even consider until after the game. It's after the game, I haven'tseen him, so I'm assuming he's quit the team for good. Until I know different, we'll see. I won't entertain anything until he's got a good reason or he can justify what his actions have been." Offensive line coach Kevin Wilson said Millington has to gain back trust. (NewsOK.com)

Sooner Players hold team meeting: The Sooners hustled off the practice field Monday and went straight into their locker room for a players-only meeting. Linebacker Clint Ingram said the team captains called the meeting so players could air their feelings about Saturday's loss to TCU. "We don't really know what's going on with everyone," Ingram said. The meeting comes after coach Bob Stoops publicly questioned this team's toughness and wondered whether some players aren't willing to work hard enough to win. Quarterback Paul Thompson met with reporters afterward but would not elaborate on what was said. (Dallas Morning News)

Bomar and Thompson restricted to media: Stoops has limited the availability of quarterbacks Rhett Bomar and Paul Thompson to the media. Whereas the quarterbacks used to be available after games, Monday's practice and either Tuesday's practice or Tuesday's media luncheon, they will now speak only after games and on Monday.
