Oklahoma Sooner's Notes and Articles
Peterson doesn't play scrimmage: All-American running back Adrian Peterson did not play in the scrimmage. "He's been tight a little bit," Stoops said. "We're not going to push it. We'll just see how it goes," Stoops added that Peterson's ailment is not serious. (SoonerSports.com)
Dvoracek offers apology, expects to play TCU: Dusty Dvoracek, a Lake Dallas native who nearly saw his football career ruined by alcoholism, stepped forward Monday and offered his first public apology for his actions last season that got him dismissed from the Oklahoma football team. His long hair is still bleached blond, and his arms still bulge. But Dvoracek said he is a different person. The 6-3, 298-pound defensive tackle said he has quit drinking. He said he goes to bed around 10 p.m. and, in turn, has a much more calm demeanor. "I've been working with some really good people to address those problems, and I feel like I'm a much better person, a more complete person," said Dvoracek, 24. "I feel like I've fixed a lot of things that I felt were wrong." It's unclear whether these personal changes will affect Dvoracek on the field. The senior still has not recovered from a left biceps injury suffered during the spring game. Thus, he has not practiced at full speed this August. But Dvoracek said he expects to play against TCU on Sept. 3, and he's just glad to get a second chance. "I could have easily gone to the NFL," Dvoracek said to a group of reporters inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. "But I wanted to come back here and stare this thing right in the face. No timetable set on naming QB: Quarterbacks Rhett Bomar and Paul Thompson, the centers of attention, directed one lengthy scoring drive each. Bomar marched the team 75 yards in nine plays. Jacob Gutierrez covered the final yard for the touchdown. Thompson came back to lead an eight-play, 75-yard drive that also culminated with a one-yard run, this one by Donta Hickson. Bomar completed 6-of-9 passes for 90 yards, while Thompson connected on 9-of-16 for 107 "I was pleased with the quarterbacks," Stoops said. "I thought both were sharp in the huddle, sharp at the line of scrimmage. They made a lot of nice throws. That part is really exciting," But Stoops said the decision as to a starter is still in the distance. "We'll have one named when we need to." he said. "It could be 10 days before, could be a week before, could be two weeks before, could be game week. I don't know. If we feel it's been decided or if we feel there is some seperation, we'll separate them. At this point, it's just too soon." (SoonerSports.com)
Fan attendance, including Gov. Henry: Among the estimated 8,500 fans in attendance at Oklahoma's scrimmage Monday night was the state's First Family. Gov. Brad Henry, his wife, Kim, and their daughter, Laynie, took in the scrimmage from the sidelines. "I just can’t wait for football season," Henry said. "I've been reading the sports pages every day and keeping up with (the Sooners). We just thought we’d come down and watch." Count the governor as impressed. "It's exciting," Henry said. "They look pretty good." (NewsOK.com)
