(8/23) Birdine Season Ending Injury, Wilson on watchlist and more.
Oklahoma Football Notes and Articles
Wilson on Watch list: Oklahoma's Travis Wilson is one of 31 players listed on the preseason watch for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, which is presented annually to the top receiver in college football. OU's Mark Clayton was a finalist for the same award in 2003. Wilson has 80 career receptions for 1,005 yards and 16 touchdowns. Last season, the Carrollton, Texas, product led the Sooners with 11 TD grabs while hauling in 50 catches for 660 yards. The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., (TQC Foundation), the creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award, is an independent, charitable organization founded in 1994. More than 50 prominent journalists, commentators, announcers and former players select the winner through a process audited by a CPA firm. (SoonerSports.com)
Sooners Practice indoors, Herbstreit and Taylor on hand: Oklahoma, on the first day of classes in Norman, observed one practice on Monday, and that one was held in the Everest Indoor Center after morning showers softened the practice fields. The Sooners worked out for two hours in the humid, but sure-footed indoor complex. ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit and ABC's Aaron Taylor were on hand to observe. Both were in town for just the day to take in a practice session and catch a glimpse of the highly touted class of newcomers. Herbstreit did an interview during the day that will run on SportsCenter. Portions of it also will be used when ESPN features Oklahoma as part of its state-by-state preview. (SoonerSports.com)
Dusty to be examined: Senior defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek has an examination scheduled this morning to evaluate his surgically repaired left arm. Last spring, he suffered a torn biceps muscle. “Hopefully, after talking with (the doctors) — my arm’s really feeling great,” Dvoracek said. “It’s progressed really quickly. So hopefully I’ll be able to really start doing some drills this week or early next week and get ready for that first game.” (NewsOK.com)
Birdine suffers season ending Injury: Oklahoma defensive end Larry Birdine has been lost for the season after suffering a torn left biceps muscle. OU head coach Bob Stoops made the announcement after Tuesday's practice. Birdine will undergo surgery on Thursday. The Lawton senior played as a reserve last season behind Dan Cody and Jonathan Jackson, but still ranked second on the team with 11 tackles for loss. He ranked third on the team with seven sacks. "It was kind of a fluke injury," Stoops said. "He just got tangled up with Travis Wilson in a pass skel. There really wasn't much contact." Birdine suffered the injury several days ago, but had tried to rehab. On Tuesday, Stoops said the extent of the injury had been determined. (SoonerSports.com)
