(8/14) Smith at Safety? Sooner's take a day off, Former Tight End inducted into Hall.
Oklahoma Sooner's Notes and Articles
Stoops says Smith has many options at Safety: Reggie Smith is one of several freshmen the Sooners expect to play this season. The question has been where. The heralded recruit from Edmond Santa Fe worked at cornerback and safety during the first week of practice. Stoops said Smith’s future appears to be at the latter position. “He gives you a lot of options at safety — his ability to play man and other things,” Stoops said. “It gives you a lot of options. It’s more because of the diversity he gives you in there.” (Norman Transcript)
Sooner's taking a day off: After 12 practices and 10 straight days of work, OU players will get their first day off of preseason drills today. The team will return to practice Monday with two sessions (8:45 a.m.; 6 p.m.). The Sooners are scheduled to have another day off Thursday. The two-a-day portion of preseason drills ends Saturday, with classes beginning Aug. 22. (NEWSOK.com)
Former Oklahoma Tight End inducted into Hall of Fame: Former Oklahoma football great Tony Casillas was among 20 former players and coaches enshrined Saturday in the College Football Hall of Fame. Casillas, a middle guard, said he was overwhelmed by the honor when he saw a stat that said nearly 5 million men have played college football but fewer than 1,000 have been honored by the hall. "That kind of puts everything in perspective," said Casillas, who won the Lombardi Award as the nation's top lineman in helping the Sooners to a national championship in 1985. "The hall really brings the adrenaline out in you." (NEWSOK.com)
Hartley to be kicker for Sooners in '05: Garrett Hartley will be the Sooners’ place kicker this season and he showed he has a powerful foot. Hartley was 9-for-15 on field goal attempts prior to the scrimmage. He was 6-for-6 inside 42 yards, but struggled from beyond the distance. Hartley, who came out of redshirt in OU’s final regular-season game last season, was just 3-for-9 from 47 yards or longer. Hartley did connect on attempts from 52 and 57 yards. His final attempt, a 62-yarder, had the distance but sailed wide left. (Norman Transcript)
