Holmes to practice at free safety and corner: Coach Bob Stoops said Holmes will practice this spring at cornerback and free safety, and by the fall will probably settle in the spot he's needed at the most. "He can do either. That will depend on who we get the best play from in the other guys," Stoops said. "I think Lendy has the unusual ability to be solid at corner or safety. He's been that way for us. He's played really well for us at both positions. That's been a plus for us that he has the ability to do either one. We'll just see how these other guys come along." At the moment, OU has Dominique Franks, Brian Jackson, Jamell Fleming and Jonathan Nelson competing for the two vacant starting spots at cornerback, with Holmes playing free safety, defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Friday. Granger and Holmes to participate in spring practice: Despite being held out of the Fiesta Bowl for different reasons, defensive back Lendy Holmes and defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger will both participate in spring drills. Holmes didn't make the trip to Arizona after failing to stay academically eligible. But he has since made himself eligible to practice with the team again. Granger was arrested in Tempe, Ariz., accused of shoplifting. He was sent home the next day. (The Oklahoman)

Stoops confirms Holmes ineligible for Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops confirmed Wednesday night that junior defensive back Lendy Holmes of South Oak Cliff didn't make the trip and won't play in the Fiesta Bowl against West Virginia on Jan. 2. Holmes' father, Lendy Holmes Sr., told The Dallas Morning News on Saturday that his son is academically ineligible and wouldn't play in the Fiesta Bowl. "He won't be here," Stoops said during the Sooners' arrival press conference at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport. "I thought that was talked about a couple days ago." Stoops said redshirt freshman Dominique Franks or sophomore Brian Jackson of DeSoto would start at cornerback in place of Holmes. (Dallas Morning News)

Lendy Holmes likely out of Fiesta Bowl? The father of Oklahoma junior defensive back Lendy Holmes of South Oak Cliff said Saturday that his son is academically ineligible and won't play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2 against West Virginia. Lendy Holmes Sr. said his son's eligibility came down to one class and he "was missing one grade point." Holmes' father said the matter isn't totally resolved yet and there was still an outside chance his son could "make it right" and gain his eligibility. (Dallas Morning News)

Oklahoma shuffles DBs; Holmes to free safety: The surprise move for the start of preseason practice is the shift of Lendy Holmes from cornerback to free safety. Venables said Holmes has taken to the new position like a fish to water. "He covers a lot of ground and has a lot of range. He's had hands all over the ball," Venables said. "He's really transitioned well in knowing where he needs to be and playing well in space. He does a great job of reading the quarterback." (More at Norman Transcript)

Venables praises Holmes: Oklahoma cornerback Lendy Holmes made one of the biggest defensive plays of the season Saturday, and it came on Texas A&M's longest gain of the night. Aggies tailback Michael Goodson ran by safety Nic Harris on an option and sped for 58 yards on his second play from scrimmage. The run would have covered 71 yards, and scored a touchdown, had Holmes not hustled after Goodson and caught him from behind. "Tremendous," OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables said Sunday. "Just a great effort play. A great example. It will be a tremendous teaching tool on why you don't ever give up on a play." (Tulsa World)

Holmes to play hoops for Capel: Cornerback Lendy Holmes said he wouldn't mind joining Jeff Capel's basketball team after football season ends. Holmes, who was recruited in both football and basketball out of Dallas' South Oak Cliff High School, showed up at a walk-on tryout for the Sooners last Sunday night. Holmes had not talked to Stoops about going to the tryout, and he was not allowed to participate. But he said Stoops once brought up the idea of Holmes playing basketball. "He mentioned it to me once during two-adays," Holmes said. (NewsOK.com)
