Speedway Official Tom "Sluggo" Sanders passes away: Long time auto racing official and driver Tom Sanders died of cancer on Wednesday afternoon at Baptist Hospital. The Oklahoma City-area resident was 53. The McAlester native spent several years driving race cars, mostly at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. After Sanders retired from competition, he spent 18 summers as a track official, mostly as a speedway manager under either Bud Carson, Bruce Hotz or Lanny Edwards. We have given away hundreds of toys, thanks to the great supporters and sponsors that helped this year. Plans are to give a scholarship in 2009. The Altus community has been wonderful, and the kids really love it. I’m very proud of this venture, there’s never a charge for any child to become a member, the only requirement is that they sign a Good Kid Contract, this states that they will promise to be the best that they can, try to excel in school and at home, have good sportsmanship, good manners, treat others with respect, in general, be a good kid” said Sites. Saturday marks the second Sooner card of the season atop the ¼-mile Creek County clay oval near Tulsa, as Sean McClelland came from nine rows deep for the first of two series wins this season during the June event at Creek County. Limited modified to be added in 2009 at State Fair Speedway: Promoter Lanny Edwards said limited modified cars will race at Oklahoma City next summer. The cars are cheaper than USA modifieds and, depending on car regulations, might be cheaper than factory stocks and pro stocks. "It's a good decision,” said Mark Brill, who finished third in the pro stocks points standings and won the final A feature of the season Sunday at State Fair. "It gives people an entry-level car, and you have to have entry-level groups.” Brill owns a racetrack in Meeker. He said the limited modified class is one of the best. "We have about 37 registered,” he said. Edwards said he made the decision because the limited modified motor is more economical. (The Oklahoman)

Outlaw Motor Speedway's Northcut taken to hospital after wreck: Mike Northrup had the ride of his life in racing at Outlaw Motor Speedway here Friday night, a ride he won’t soon forget. The 40-year-old racer from Coweta found himself in an accident that saw his car roll four and a half times down the front straight-away. The completely demolished car came to rest on its right side just at the track exit to the pits. Track officials and EMS technicians had to pry sheet metal away from the car to extract him from the mangled mess that was once a slick-looking racing machine. He was strapped to stretcher and removed from the track by ambulance. He was transported to Muskogee Regional Medical Center, according to track manager Eric Shannon. “He was conscious and talking with the EMS people,” Shannon said. “He took a wild ride. The safety features in his car (roll cage) did their job. They were intact despite the extensive damage to the outside and frame of the car.” (OMS PR)
