Owens returns to racing after crash: Sprint car driver Gary Owens made it back to the race track last week after a long, painful recovery. Owens missed two weeks of racing after a serious crash at State Fair Speedway. He suffered a concussion and bruised lungs. "It was good to get back out there," Owens said. "I had to kind of watch my P's and Q's." Owens said the hard flip between turns 3 and 4 didn't leave him apprehensive to race. "I have learned that if you let yourself get nervous and worry, that is when you really mess up," Owens said. (NewsOK.com)

ASCS Sooner Region scheduled this weekend at SFS and Lawton: After more than a month off, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region fires back to life with a pair of events in Oklahoma this weekend. On Friday night, the series makes its first appearance of the season at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway. Then on Saturday night, it's a quick trip down the H.E. Bailey Turnpike for the series first stop at Lawton Speedway. The series first OKC-Lawton double on June 15 and 16 was washed out. With five events in the books and seven rainouts over the early portion of the year, 21-year-old Cody Branchcomb of Sapulpa, OK, holds a slim lead as he chases down his first series championship. Just 12 points off the lead pace is Tulsa's Brian McClelland, who likewise is pursuing his first Sooner crown after notching his first ASCS Sooner Region victory in the series most recent event on July 7 at Cowtown Speedway. Entering the weekend ranked fourth is two-time series champion Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth, TX, who will look to make up some ground on the leaders. Thirty-seven points off the lead pace, Ramey will likely gain at least one spot as third-ranked Ray Allen Kulhanek is expected to be in ASCS Gulf South competition this weekend. Sherman Davis of Sand Springs, OK, rounds out the current top five, with the balance of the current top ten including Gavin Punch (Collinsville, OK), 2001 ASCS Sooner Region champion J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), Michael Brown (Lawton, OK), 2005 ASCS Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK) and Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK). Friday's action at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's event at Lawton Speedway going green at 8:30 p.m. Oklahoma City's semi-banked, 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval is located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796. Lawton Speedway is located in Lawton, OK, off I-44 Exit 36, then 2.5 miles west on Lee Boulevard, then 1.4 miles south on Sheridan Road. For more information, contact the track at 580-355-6417. (ASCS)

Update on Outlaw Motor Speedway sale: Clay initially invested $5 million to build the track and three offers -- up to $1.5 million -- have been given to Coldwell Banker. The continued reduction in price reveals just how determined Clay is to get out of the racing business. "I own Advance Roofing and my boy is 16 and racing. When you own a track, you're obligated 100 percent," Clay said. "He's coming along really good and I want to spend the next four or five years with him at different tracks. I'm 56 and I've things I want to do. "I've got two guys trying to buy it now. It's a good offer, but I won't get a third of what I've got in it. One is from Eufaula and the other from Checotah. They want to own it and not run it. If they buy it, I'll stay a year and show them the ins and outs of what to do and not to do." (Tulsa World)

Hacker grabs first win of 2007 season at Enid Speedway Park: First-half champion Darren Hacker dominated in the main event as he drove his Hot Shots Power Washing/Midway Rentals-sponsored Kraft chassis to his first win of the season in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night. "We needed this win,'' said Hacker. Pat McVicker sped off the outside pole and took command of the race. Bryan Rowland found the quick way around in lap 11 and had control of the track when Kelly Wheeler slammed into the wall and brought out a yellow flag in lap 14. Rowland headed up the restart, only to see another caution fly as Dusty Robbins flew off the track in turn four. A yellow came out on the restart as chaos in turn four left Troy Gemmill stopped. Hacker made a brilliant inside challenge when the race went green and hustled into the lead. With a clear track in front of him, Hacker was unstoppable and took nearly a straightaway advantage to the checkered flag. Brandon Kenny made a late charge to secure second, trailed by Rowland, McVicker and Jim Ciampi. (More at The Enid News and Eagle)

Wrecks costly for local owner: Longtime car owner Don Strawn of Nicoma Park dipped into the bank account after all three of his racers were involved in crashes on July 13 at State Fair Speedway. Sprint car drivers Michelle Decker and Gary Flatt both flipped, and a pro stock driven by James Beane broke a power steering pump. Beane's car was also involved in a couple of minor crashes. "I probably had to spend around $3,500 in parts this week," Strawn said. "That is part of racing, but I have never had that much damage to my cars in one week." (NewsOK.com)

Chili Bowl Tickets Sold Out: What has become the norm over the past several years proved to be the case once again this year. When the ticket renewal deadline for the 22nd Annual O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals hit on June 1, demand for four-night tickets once again exceeded the supply. All four-night tickets were mailed by July 1 and distributed to the lucky ticket holders. The silver lining for some is that approximately 1,600 tickets for the Tuesday night Pre-Qualifying event remain and may be purchased in advance for $21 by calling the Chili Bowl ticket office at 918-838-3777. Pit passes for the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday portions of the Chili Bowl will be available as well. The 22nd Annual Chili Bowl Nationals takes place at the Tulsa Expo Raceway on January 8-12, 2008, with reigning event champion Tony Stewart gunning for a third Golden Driller against a field that could easily rival the 2007 record of 267 competitors. Additional information regarding the O'Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals is available at www.chilibowl.com or by calling the office at 918-838-3777.
