Robbins Rolls to NCRA Mod South Victory at Elk City: Dusty Robbins of Enid, Oklahoma over took race leader Travis Penrod with five laps to go and went on to win the O’Reilly/NCRA modified south Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature finale Saturday night at Elk Citys I-40 Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma. John Webb and Penrod started on the front row for the 30 lap Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature with Penord taking the lead as the green flag fell. Fourth starting Greg Burt quickly moved into the second position followed by Matt French, Thomas Tillison, Jr. and Chad Davis after the first lap was completed. By lap three the Davis resident had opened up his lead over Burt to ten car lengths and set a torrid pace throughout the early stages of the race. But the pace would slow on lap twelve when Alan Sharpensteen went for a spin in turn two for the races first caution. On the restart it was still Penrod out front but behind him the action was heating up as Robbins, who restarted third, over took Burt for the runner up position and began setting his sights on the leader. At the races midway point it was Penrod, followed by Robbins, Burt, seventh starting Mickey Lassiter, Tillison and French as racing action resumed and a four car battle waged for the third position with drivers running top to bottom across the perfectly prepared three-eighths mile oval. Lap eighteen saw Robbins on Penrods rear bumper and coming down the front stretch, would overtake the leader to lead lap nineteen. Penord would have nothing of the sort and retook the top spot with a strong move exiting turn two and heading down the back stretch. A couple of cautions slowed the pace the last ten laps but none the final five and that is where things heated up. Penrod, dealing with lapped traffic with five laps to go, then had to deal with Robbins who was now starting to make his move. On lap twenty-six Robbins got a run down low exiting turn two and shot passed the leader down the back stretch to take the lead. From there he was never headed as Robbins went on to claim the six car length victory. (David Smith JR/ PR)

Thunderbird Speedway set to re-open March 26: The opening of the Thunderbird Speedway took another step forward Monday. With a ribbon cutting ceremony at the dirt track located at the Muskogee Fairgrounds, Stanley Slader talked enthusiastically about the first play day, or practice session, scheduled to start at noon Saturday. Opening night is set for March 26. “All you need for a play day are cars, people and good weather,” said Slader, who is leasing the dirt oval for three years and with a three-year option from owner Charlie Fulton. “We’re supposed to have all of that.” The track first opened as a horse track in 1903 and auto racing began in 1955. The track closed in 2003 because of condemned grandstands. “The track’s been here forever and there are so many people want it built back up and so many sponsors that want it to open,” Slader said, adding the track has “about 50 sponsors” listed on its website, thunderbirdspeedwaymuskogee.com. World of Outlaws returns to Oklahoma; Series to visit Tri-State Speedway: The World of Outlaws will return to Oklahoma this season for the first time since 2005 on Saturday, April 10 with the series inaugural visit to Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, which is located right near the Oklahoma/Arkansas state line. The series was scheduled to compete at the high-banked 3/8-mile in 2005, but Mother Nature was victorious in that one. The World of Outlaws debut at Tri-State Speedway will mark the first-ever 410-winged sprint car race at the facility which hosted sprint cars for the first time back in 1977. "We're really looking forward to it," said Danny Womack, co-promoter of Tri-State Speedway. "This will be the biggest event of the year at the track. The World of Outlaws have never been here before so it will be very big and there isn't anything bigger than the World of Outlaws. It's going to be a big deal for sure." The World of Outlaws debuted in Oklahoma back in 1978 during the series inaugural campaign and competed in the state in 26 of the next 27 years, with 19 drivers scoring A-Feature wins over that time. The list of drivers that have won with the series in Oklahoma reads like a venerable 'Who's Who' of the sport, with 20-time series champion Steve Kinser on top. Other Hall of Famers that have won in the state with the World of Outlaws include: three-time series champion Sammy Swindell, Doug Wolfgang, Ron Shuman, Brad Doty and Jac Haudenschild. "It's great to have the World of Outlaws back in Oklahoma," said Hall of Famer Shane Carson, who resides in Yukon, Oklahoma and is involved in Industry Relations for the World of Outlaws. "It should be an exciting race at a very nice track. I'm really looking forward to it." Steve Kinser was victorious in the last World of Outlaws event in the Sooner State back in 2005 at Outlaw Motor Speedway, which is co-owned by Danny Womack. In his legendary career, Kinser has 19 wins with the World of Outlaws in Oklahoma and over 50 Top-10 finishes. Donny Schatz, the four-time and defending World of Outlaws champion, who is Kinser's teammate at Tony Stewart Racing was victorious in Oklahoma in 2003 at State Fair Speedway. Danny Lasoski, who claimed the 2001 World of Outlaws title, has three wins with the series in Oklahoma with the most recent of those coming in 2002. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that have won in the state include Jac Haudenschild, who has two victories as well as rookie contender Tim Kaeding. Sam Hafertepe Jr. is the only driver currently competing full-time with the World of Outlaws that has raced at Tri-State Speedway. The native of Sunnyvale, Texas has two starts at the high-banked 3/8-mile in his career. Judge rules against racing community; Edwards to appeal in State Supreme Court: The 2010 racing season still is canceled at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. A judge Friday refused to block work that will disconnect electricity from the grandstand and dirt track. Thousands of fans have watched auto racing there on Friday nights for years. Oklahoma County District Judge Dan Owens ruled after hearing expert testimony about the danger of electrocution to fans and maintenance workers because of an outdated and out-of-code electrical system. "What we now know is there is a safety risk,” the judge said. The judge said public safety has to be his primary concern. After ruling, the judge urged race car drivers, owners and their fans to talk to city officials about a way to fix the problems and keep the State Fair Speedway open. Nearly 50 racing enthusiasts showed up for the hearing Thursday and the ruling Friday. Edwards said he will appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court. (The Oklahoman)

State Fair Speedway's faith to be determined tomorrow: In less then 24 hours local racers should know the fate of the Oklahoma State Speedway. In December of 2009, city officials shut down the track and canceled the 2010 racing season because of hanging power lines and other electrical issues near the grandstands. To keep the track open, members of the racing community filed an injection against the city's decision. During today's hearing, an expert witness for the Oklahoma Racing Association testified that the electrical issues were not severe enough to cancel the racing season, but an electrician for the city disagreed and said patrons would be in danger. A final decision about the speedway should be determined by Friday afternoon. (KFOR.com)

Thompson performs well in Tulsa Shootout: Oklahoma resident Tyler Thomas competed in his second career Tusla Shootout this past weekend in two separate divisions. With the annual event taking place in his hometown, Thomas would do battle in both the Micro Sprint and Eco-tec Chevy Midget divisions claiming two top ten results including a second place finish in the competitive Micro Sprint class. Thursday afternoon would provide one lone practice session and heat races for most drivers as Thomas would pull pill number seventy-two out of one hundred to line him up starting in the sixth position in the 49th heat race. Working off passing points and finishing results to transfer directly to the A-main, Thomas would be looking for a solid position which he gained by a strong second place result, directly qualifying him for Saturday’s main event. In Saturday’s main event, Thomas would start outside the second row as he looked to take his first Tulsa Shootout crown. A strong set of opening laps propelled Thomas to the lead where he would control the field for more than half the event. Just past the crossed flags, Thomas would lose one spot and fall to P2 where he would remain until the checkered flag flew. Having only competed in the Micro Sprint division for one season, Thomas made a lasting impression in the division and is truly a star in the making. This very weekend at one of the country’s biggest events, Thomas made his debut in the Eco-tec Chevy Midget where more than 25 cars would do battle. With an unlucky pill draw, Thomas would be forced to start his heat from the tail of the field in the 74th heat race of the day. Being this was his first ever event, Thomas was hoping to finish the event in one piece but as he has done all season, impressed everyone in attendance. With a solid fifth place finish in his heat, Thomas would start third in the main event qualifier where he would come home fourth to transfer to the A-main. With the Midget main event one of the biggest races on the Shootout docket, Thomas would start from the 13th position. A strong run and a few bold passes, the talented rookie would come home a strong ninth in his first career Midget event. “The Tulsa Shootout is one of the biggest races of the year and it happens in my backyard,” stated Tyler Thomas. “We come here everyday all week to get prepared and the racing is just awesome. We performed very well this week and we will be back next season to see if we can get that elusive win.” Tyler would like to thank his 2009 supporters: Factor 1 Racing, ThrillerPhoto.com, Douglas Wheel, Race Tech Development, Go Racing Magazine, Remington Investigation, Alpinestars, Bell Helmets, Citizens Security Bank, Ribtect, Walters Web Design and On Track Promotions.
