Judge rules against racing community; Edwards to appeal in State Supreme Court: The 2010 racing season still is canceled at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. A judge Friday refused to block work that will disconnect electricity from the grandstand and dirt track. Thousands of fans have watched auto racing there on Friday nights for years. Oklahoma County District Judge Dan Owens ruled after hearing expert testimony about the danger of electrocution to fans and maintenance workers because of an outdated and out-of-code electrical system. "What we now know is there is a safety risk,” the judge said. The judge said public safety has to be his primary concern. After ruling, the judge urged race car drivers, owners and their fans to talk to city officials about a way to fix the problems and keep the State Fair Speedway open. Nearly 50 racing enthusiasts showed up for the hearing Thursday and the ruling Friday. Edwards said he will appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court. (The Oklahoman)

State Fair Speedway's faith to be determined tomorrow: In less then 24 hours local racers should know the fate of the Oklahoma State Speedway. In December of 2009, city officials shut down the track and canceled the 2010 racing season because of hanging power lines and other electrical issues near the grandstands. To keep the track open, members of the racing community filed an injection against the city's decision. During today's hearing, an expert witness for the Oklahoma Racing Association testified that the electrical issues were not severe enough to cancel the racing season, but an electrician for the city disagreed and said patrons would be in danger. A final decision about the speedway should be determined by Friday afternoon. (KFOR.com)

Thompson performs well in Tulsa Shootout: Oklahoma resident Tyler Thomas competed in his second career Tusla Shootout this past weekend in two separate divisions. With the annual event taking place in his hometown, Thomas would do battle in both the Micro Sprint and Eco-tec Chevy Midget divisions claiming two top ten results including a second place finish in the competitive Micro Sprint class. Thursday afternoon would provide one lone practice session and heat races for most drivers as Thomas would pull pill number seventy-two out of one hundred to line him up starting in the sixth position in the 49th heat race. Working off passing points and finishing results to transfer directly to the A-main, Thomas would be looking for a solid position which he gained by a strong second place result, directly qualifying him for Saturday’s main event. In Saturday’s main event, Thomas would start outside the second row as he looked to take his first Tulsa Shootout crown. A strong set of opening laps propelled Thomas to the lead where he would control the field for more than half the event. Just past the crossed flags, Thomas would lose one spot and fall to P2 where he would remain until the checkered flag flew. Having only competed in the Micro Sprint division for one season, Thomas made a lasting impression in the division and is truly a star in the making. This very weekend at one of the country’s biggest events, Thomas made his debut in the Eco-tec Chevy Midget where more than 25 cars would do battle. With an unlucky pill draw, Thomas would be forced to start his heat from the tail of the field in the 74th heat race of the day. Being this was his first ever event, Thomas was hoping to finish the event in one piece but as he has done all season, impressed everyone in attendance. With a solid fifth place finish in his heat, Thomas would start third in the main event qualifier where he would come home fourth to transfer to the A-main. With the Midget main event one of the biggest races on the Shootout docket, Thomas would start from the 13th position. A strong run and a few bold passes, the talented rookie would come home a strong ninth in his first career Midget event. “The Tulsa Shootout is one of the biggest races of the year and it happens in my backyard,” stated Tyler Thomas. “We come here everyday all week to get prepared and the racing is just awesome. We performed very well this week and we will be back next season to see if we can get that elusive win.” Tyler would like to thank his 2009 supporters: Factor 1 Racing, ThrillerPhoto.com, Douglas Wheel, Race Tech Development, Go Racing Magazine, Remington Investigation, Alpinestars, Bell Helmets, Citizens Security Bank, Ribtect, Walters Web Design and On Track Promotions. Cornett: I'm confident OKC is going to have some type of motor sports component: Mick Cornett said it's best not to re-build State Fair Speedway, but to build a modern, multi-purpose racetrack. According to Cornett, all of the current successful business models around the country for motor sports have these components:
?The racetrack is located on the edge of the city or outside of the city.
?The racetrack is a multi-purpose facility, a combination of asphalt and dirt and perhaps even a drag strip to attract more kinds of racing and even concerts.
?The racetrack is built below grade, or below ground, to reduce the noise level.
"That's the way it works in communities where it works," Cornett said. "I think we can support that." The city has looked at possible locations for another racetrack, but so far hasn't been able to entice a developer to invest in the idea, Cornett said. One of the areas looked at in the past was around Draper Lake, but the neighborhoods there also opposed it, he said. It's difficult to convince neighborhood associations that a new racetrack wouldn't be another noisy State Fair Speedway, he said. Despite the obstacles, Cornett believes there will be auto racing in Oklahoma City's future. "I feel confident that our market is going to have some type of motor sports component going forward," Cornett said. "I don't know when that will be." (The Oklahoman)

Mayor Mick Cornett's letter to race fans: As most racing fans are now aware, due to safety issues involving the electrical system in the grandstands, the 2010 racing season at the State Fair Grounds will not take place. Because the track has long been scheduled to be permanently closed after the 2011 season, it appears to me that we have reached the end much sooner than most of us would have preferred.

Many of us that have followed the track’s history are sad that this day has arrived. For generations, motor sports fans in central Oklahoma have supported the track and contributed to our economy. Racing is not only great entertainment, it is big business in a 21st century America and I hope that we will find a solution that allows us to continue our racing heritage. But that solution is not apparent today.

As some of the more die-hard fans may remember, I spent a summer in the late 1970s reporting for the Oklahoma City Times on the personalities that spent time at the track. That exposure allowed me to see the impact that the track had on the lives on many families, not only in Oklahoma City, but on a regional basis. I understand and appreciate the amount of money and time many racers have spent and invested on their cars and their passions.

Anyone who has served as mayor, or on city council, has heard both sides of the issue. The neighborhoods that have endured the noise created by the track have long complained. But seemingly an equal number of racing enthusiasts see the track as an integral part of their lives. My summation is that although the track has served us well for the last 50 years, it is not the best site going forward. And I reluctantly agree that the city is not best served by continuing to invest in the current facility.

Knowing this day would arrive at some point, I have personally invested a great deal of time, and the city has invested thousands of dollars, looking for a site and a developer to help us build and operate a multi-surface track for which we could all be proud. As we continue to look for a solution that might lead us to a new track and a new era, I want to thank the thousands of Oklahoma City drivers, owners, crews, and fans who played a part during the years of success. I understand the words seem hollow when they don’t offer a firm solution, but I am confident that with the size of our market and the strength of our economy, the void created by this announcement will be addressed.

Sincerely,

Mick Cornett

Outlaw Motor Speedway gains NASCAR sanction status: NASCAR racing is taking a historic step into Oklahoma in 2010, as Outlaw Motor Speedway, a 3/8th-mile clay oval near Muskogee, Okla., becomes the first track in The Sooner State to gain NASCAR sanction. The track becomes part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, NASCAR’s national championship program for weekly racers, and opens its season March 13. “We’ve been in discussions with NASCAR for some time,” said Lynn Skinner, who operates the seven year old track with Danny Womack and facility manager Eric Shannon. “We’re proud to partner with NASCAR to be the first and only NASCAR-sanctioned track in the state. We are proactive in our promotion and this is another step to grow the track.” “We are just like the Thunder (NBA) to Okalhoma City or the Drillers (AA Baseball) to Tulsa, we are now the same. To me we’re now a farm team of the New York Yankees as far as race tracks go,” Skinner said. “Every race car driver in this part of the country will want to connect here and the residual effect on our fans will be like getting to see a Heisman Trophy winner before he turns pro.” “Short track racing is the heart and soul of NASCAR,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations who was present at the press conference yesterday for the announcement. “The history-making addition of our first sanctioned track in Oklahoma brings the excitement and passion of NASCAR racing home to the fans that make up the foundation of this sport.” “Outlaw Motor Speedway just seemed like a great place to start,” said Silbermann.“We’re very aware of the quality of the facility, the fan-friendly atmosphere and the quality of drivers, If you look at the tracks in our program, they’re among the best in North America.” There is tangible depth to NASCAR’s rewards and recognition program available to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series participants. NASCAR-licensed drivers in Outlaw Motor Speedway’s NASCAR Feature Division, the Modifieds, are eligible to compete for track and state championships and their point fund awards, as well as the 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship. State champions also receive customized championship drivers’ helmets and racing uniforms from series sponsor Whelen Engineering. All NASCAR-licensed drivers competing in NASCAR-sanctioned divisions at sanctioned tracks also receive coverage under the NASCAR-provided excess insurance policy. Feature Division champions, state champions and the national champion are invited to attend the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national awards banquet in Concord, N.C. There are several days of activities in the Charlotte area leading up to the awards ceremonies. Feature Division state or province champions are determined by drivers’ highest 18 finishes at NASCAR-sanctioned tracks within a state. The track’s 2009 champions include Joe Duvall, Modifieds; Kevin Flock, Hobby Stocks; Patrick Goodnight, 360 Modifieds; Ronnie Palmer, Front Wheel Drive Factory Stocks; and Kyle Slader, Pure Stocks. Outlaw Motor Speedway participants are now part of NASCAR’s Home Track network of short tracks across the United States and Canada. (PR)

State Fair Speedway to close; 2010 season in doubt: The state fairgrounds has likely seen its last motor race because $400,000 in electrical repairs must immediately be made before racing could be safely conducted next season, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said Monday night. And even if those repairs were made, more money would have to be invested into the aging track by 2012 to get the speedway into compliance with the federal American Disabilities Act, he said. "They (State Fair Board) just don’t think it is a good investment,” Cornett said. State Fair Speedway completed its 55th season of racing last summer. The decision was made long ago that it would remain open as long as racing could be safely conducted, but no more capital dollars would be invested in it, Cornett said. “The track has served us well for 50 years, but it’s not the best place for racing the next 50 years,” Cornett said. “The decision has long been made we were not going to invest more capital dollars in the track because of the wishes of the neighborhoods around it.” (The Oklahoman)

Mansfield wins Turkey Leg 100 Enduro: Outlaw Motor Speedway regular Jeran Frailey had things his own way for 57 laps in the Second Annual Turkey Leg Enduro Saturday afternoon at Outlaw Motor Speedway. But then a right rear flat sent him to the pits, knocking him out of contention and opened the door for Tom Mansfield to win the $1,000 price for taking the checkered flag in the 100-lap race. The win was Mansfield’s second Enduro triumph in three weeks. The South Coffeyville, OK., resident won a $1,000 for taking the 100 lap Coffeyville race earlier this month. He said he has designs going to Enid for a third race next weekend. “I hope things can hang together just one more week,” Mansfield said of the car.”We’ll pull the car back home and check her out and make q decision after that.” The 48-year-old racing veteran who calls South Coffeyville, Oklahoma home, said he had no idea where he was running in the race, other than “not very many cars had passed us and we had passed a lot. “I didn’t know until that 16 car – Frailey – went out that I was in the lead. Those last 19 laps just kept my foot in the gas and depended on my navigator – son-in-law Rusty Wilson – to let me know what was going on around the track and keep me out of trouble.” For Wilson, it was his first-ever ride in a race car. “I just looked out for traffic and red flags,” Wilson said. “I wasn’t nervous at all, but I’ll tell you this, I wouldn’t ride in any other race car other than one driven by Tom.” “We didn’t do anything special to soup-up the car except tune the engine and add some safety features,” Mansfield said. “I came here to win and we did. I had a blast. This is a great track, the best I’ve ever raced on and I’ve competed on lot of dirt tracks in my career..” (OMS PR)

It will also cover how strong the metals and structures are, the force in the wrecks and how the people sustain any impact. The episode will air sometime in 2010. "This is an exciting opportunity for the Muskogee area to make an impact and be televised all over the world," said track co-owner Lynn Skinner. "This is a race that literally anyone can enter and now they get to be on TV. "Just get a car, knock out the windows and basically race it," said Skinner. "With $1,000 up to the winner and no entry fee, this is one of our funniest and most entertaining races of the season." "We would love to see 200 cars starting the race, that would be a sight having cars stretch all the way around the track," said Skinner. (OMS PR)

Phillips wins 3rd Annual Fall Brawl at OMS: Terry Phillips drove a “loose” race car to victory lane to capture the Modified championship in the Third Annual Fall Brawl at Outlaw Motor Speedway here Saturday night. Phillips, Springfield, MO, led from start-to-finish to capture the $5,000 first place prize money. Not even two caution flags and a red flag for debris on the track could stop him. He led Justin Hughes, Watts, over the finish line with Johnny Bone, Pea Ridge, AR., finishing third. “I misread the track and had the wrong setup tonight,” Phillips said. “My car was loose, but I was able to hold off some good drivers for the win. Justin kept the pressure on me, there was no breathing room. “This track, as good as it is, has had a lot of laps on it the last two nights, not to mention the wet weather we’ve had this week. I just didn’t read it right, and I don’t thing anyone else did either.” Phillips captured the pole by winning the qualifying feature Friday night by inches over Hughes. He made the pass for the win just before the flag stand. The highest finishing local driver was Bixby’s Greg Skaggs, sixth. This year’s point champion Joe Duvall, Chelsea, was last after dropping out of the race with car problems early.

Grand Nationals

Dale Richardson, moving to first when pole-setter Colton Dunlap pulled out of the race after just one lap, won the feature. Richardson starting along side of his Muskogee buddy on the front row, trailed the Muskogee teenager by a car when Dunlap pulled into the infield. A broken distributor put Dunlap, who won the qualifying event Friday, out of the race. After taking the lead, Richardson easily pulled away from the field. The race was for second place between Haskell’s Jay Arnold and Kansas’ Billy Kelley, with Arnold finishing second. The race was cut from 20 to 15 laps because only 11 cars made the feature lineup. There were five no-shows.

Pure Stock

Matt Burnett, denied re-entry to the track in Friday’s qualifying race, came back to win the feature tonight. Burnett went to the pits after a minor car problem instead of going to the hot-pit area. Track rules prohibit a car from rejoining a race if they go to the pits. Burnett, Muskogee, passed defending champion Russell McLain, Chouteau, and led the rest of the way. He had a nice, 11-car lead at finish, beating Tahlequah’s Jason Ward and Fort Gibson’s Dalton Ragsdale. McLain finished fourth. McLain and 2009 track champion Kyle Slader took turns leading the race before Burnett took over on lap seven, passing Slader on the low side out of turn four. A caution one-lap later hurt Slader, as McLain passed him on the backstretch on the restart to slip back into the challenging position. He maintained that until a restart for debris on the track with six laps to go let the field catchup with the two leaders. Ward and Fort Gibson’s Dalton Ragsdale got past McLain and held him off in the final two laps.

360 Modified

Attrition took its toll among the leaders, opening the door for Jeran Frailey to capture – the feature and $1,000 to win prize money. There were four different leaders of the 20-lap race and besides Frailey, only Porter’s Carl Conley finished – sixth. Early race leaders Shannon Reheard, Muskogee, and Braggs’ Patrick Goodnight, Braggs, left the race because of mechanical problems. Frailey, from Chouteau, jumped from third to first when Conley and Reheard made door-to-door contact in front of the grandstands. Both went to the hot pit area where Reheard discovered he had a broken rear-end. Conley had a flat right-rear tire, and after having it changed, he returned to the track at the tail-end of the remaining 14-car field. Goodnight went from first to sixth after an lap 11 restart with apparent car problems. He eventually dropped out of the race four laps later and finished 13th. In the meantime, Frailey won for the second week in a row, beating Porter’s Casey Lindell and Muskogee’s Mike Wroblewski. Starting in the third position, he dropped to fourth before climbing back in the hunt just before Reheard and Conley’s mishap brought out the caution. (PR)

Man attacked, another arrested after alleged assault: A Stilwell man was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly attacking a Missouri race car driver in the pit of Outlaw Motor Speedway. Charles Sims, 51, allegedly attacked Burl Woods, 32, of Republic, Mo., with a flashlight. Muskogee County Chief Deputy Terry Freeman said Woods was treated at Muskogee Regional Medical Center for a head injury and released. Before hitting Woods with the flashlight, Sims asked Woods why he ran his son off the track, according to the report. Sims was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Freeman said. (Muskogee Phoenix)

Essary wins $3,000 race at Enid Speedway Park: Rafe Essary brought the OCRS season to a close with the biggest win of his career Sunday at Enid Speedway Park. Essary drove off the pole and led all 25 laps on a black dry slick race track to pick up a $3,000 first place check. "Jamie (Passmore) won last night and we won tonight," smiled a happy Rafe Essary after climbing out of his car. "It could not be a better weekend for us. November 15 is my 48th birthday so it was a good day." Essary was chased by outside front row starter Mike Goodman from the start. Taylor Milton, Sean McClelland and Jonathan Beason bell in behind Goodman and the race went 13 laps before a yellow flag. The five continued out front until lap 19 when Milton slowed to a stop in turn two bringing out the yellow. With Milton out Beason moved up to third with McClelland and Jamie Passmore fifth. The final six laps saw Essary continue for his first victory of the season. Goodman, who tried to challenge Essary briefly on lap 10, finished a close second. Beason, McClelland and 2009 champion Jamie Passmore rounded out the top five. Passmore successfully defended his 2008 championship with his win on Friday night. It is the second career OCRS crown for the Rose, Oklahoma resident. After going winless most of the season Passmore won three of the last five events to take command of the points lead. (PR)

Lewis and Foster crowned at Thunder Valley: Hundreds of racers in 11 categories commanded the strip this weekend at Thunder Valley Raceway, which completed the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for the South Central division. In the end, Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Brandon Lewis of Broken Arrow, Okla., took home the final win light and locked down the division Championship. Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Chris Foster out of Davenport, Iowa, also picked up a victory and is making a last minute push for the West Central division title. Lewis kept the momentum going this weekend as he picked up his third Top Alcohol Dragster victory in a row. He laid down a healthy 5.319 second, 271.00 mph pass to drive around Richard Putz of Earlville, Iowa, and grab the NHRA Wally trophy. In the all Iowa final, Foster’s 5.735 second, 248.07 mph lap was more than enough to take out the struggling Lance Van Hauen of Reinbeck. This marks Foster’s third divisional win of the year and places him in strong contention with Andrew Bohl for NHRA’s division five title. Other top honors went to Scott Parks, Burlingame, Kan., in Comp Eliminator; Jason Tinberg, Shawnee, Kan., won in Super Stock; and Jerry Hefler of Kennedale, Texas, earned the title in Stock with every opponent faced in eliminations taking a red light on the tree. The Super Gas trophy was awarded to Lonnie Grim, Benton, Ark., in his ’63 Corvette; Gary Stinnett of Emporia, Kan., wheeled his dragster to another Super Comp win; and Val Harmon from Luling, La., was victorious in Super Street. Hughes dominates OctoberFast at OMS: Dominating, there is no other way to describe Kip Hughes’ ride in the 50-lap Grand National feature in the completion of OctoberFast at Outlaw Motor Speedway late Saturday night. The Enid driver led the final 41 laps to claim the lion’s share of the purse, $5,000. Muskogee’s Colton Dunlap was second with Chad McNamara, Blackwell, third. Allen Screws, Winnsboro, Texas, one of the pre-race favorites, was fourth after experiencing mechanical problems most of the race weekend. It was Hughes’ second big payday of the month. He won $10,000 on his home track in Enid two weeks ago. “This is the best darn race car I have ever driven,” Hughes said as he watched his car go through technical inspections on the front straightaway. “This is a good, fast track. For the most part, my car handled well.” (OMS PR)

Winners from Tri-State 30th Annual Spooker: Wow! That is the easiest and shortest way to describe the 30th Annual Spooker, presented by Choctaw Casino that was run on October 14th-17th, 2009. Although mother nature again showed everyone that she was the boss by dropping temperatures into the mid to low 40's each night, a great time was had by everyone from fans to drivers alike. An estimated fan count of over 2,000 for the four day event bundled themselves and braved the cold temperatures at night to watch over 300 cars battle it out on the legendary high banks for some of the best racing of the year. When it was all said and done, there were ten new Spooker champions that were crowned. Dalton McKenzie (Van Buren, AR) picked up the win in the Pure Stock class as Wesley Bourne (Cameron, OK) picked up the trophy for the Mini-Stocks. Ronnie Palmer (Roland, OK) showed why he was a double track champion in the Front Wheel Drives by winning the 'A' feature on Thursday night. Ty Evans (Fort Smith, AR) took home the top Road Runner honors on Friday night as Clay Julian (Ozark, AR) picked up the B Modified win. (PR)
