OKTAHA, Okla. -- Johnny Bone, from Pea Ridge, Ark., led
wire to wire to win the Modified Azalea Shootout at
Outlaw Motor Speedway Saturday night and pocketed the
$2,000 bounty with his second career Feature win at the
3/8th mile.
Bone took the lead from the pole position and was never
really challenged. Not even four caution flags – two in
the final 10 laps – could slow the veteran driver.
At the finish, he held a four car-length margin over
Bixby’s Greg Skaggs with Jason Hughes, Westville, a
close third to Skaggs.
Blown engines resulted in two of the cautions. The most
costly was to Stilwell’s Eddie Martin who lost his power
plant while running second at the end of lap 17.
The win in the special 30-lap race was worth $2,000 to
Bone. The race was originally slated for April 15, but
was postponed due to cold weather.
There were 20 cars at the start with only nine running
at the end.
Bobby Potts, Hulbert, won the abbreviated Pure Stock
feature that was highlighted by an incident involving
contact between two cars that appeared to be
intentional.
The scheduled 15 lap race was sliced to nine laps after
some "rough driving" between Boynton’s James Gillian and
Muskogee’s Allen Simmons resulted in an accident during
a caution period . After a wreck in turn three brought
out the yellow flag, Simmons (running eighth) and
Gillian (ninth) continued around the track until Gillian
made a left turn into the side of Simmons car just as
the pair passed the flag stand.
Simmons got out of his crippled car and quickly
approached Gillian’s racer, leaning through the
passenger side window for "a chat". Track officials
intervened and both were black flagged from the race.
Gillian drove to the pits, Simmons needed wrecker
assistance.
Earlier, Gillian was penalized two spots for jumping a
restart after a lap five caution slowed the race.
Back to the feature, Potts out-ran Oktaha’s Gene Whittle
to gain his first triumph of the year. Whittle led for
the first five laps before surrendering the lead after a
lap five caution. The two traveled practically nose to
bumper the remainder of the race.
Dale Richardson, Muskogee, used a restart at the midway
point to spring to his second feature win of the year in
the Hobby Stock division. The defending points champion
was second when the yellow flag came out after lap 10
when Spiro’s Brookin Stephens coasted to a stop in the
middle of the track on the backstretch.
He was third at the time. His stalled car was pushed to
the pits with mechanical problems.
There was one other caution – on lap 15 for debris in
turn two. Richardson and Randy Moses, II were one-two at
the time.
On the restart, Moses briefly challenged Richardson, but
did not have enough car to make a run at his first
feature win of the year. Moses finished second, followed
by Justin Shoemaker, Inola, and Lynn Combs, Fort Gibson.
Numerous engine failures shortened the Economy Modified
feature to a 15-lap chase won by Muskogee’s Dalton Clay.
There were 17 cars in the race at the start with only
seven finishing the event. Clay took the measure of
Muskogee’s Shannon Reheard, who was seeking his second
feature verdict of the season. The final caution came on
lap 11 for debris on the track.
Clay was able to withstand a late charge from Reheard
with Ted Newell, Oktaha, and Carl Scott, Welling,
fourth. Four cars left the scheduled 20lap race with
engine problems.
Next week’s races will feature the Pure Stock’s in the
third annual Challenge. Saturday at 8 p.m.
