Biffle is confident he'll remain at Roush Fenway although performance must improve: Greg Biffle says he's 90 percent sure he will sign an extension with Roush Fenway Racing beyond the end of his contract next season. But he added that won't happen until he sees an improvement with the performance of his team, which is 19th in points. "If I am not happy, why should I negotiate?" he said before Friday's practice at Michigan International Speedway. "I need to run better. We've got a couple of weak links. We want to strengthen our team a little better. We need to show up at the race track being competitive off the truck. "I didn't forget how to drive at Pocono. We were 43rd at Pocono before qualifying. Qualified 42nd and ran 30th. And I am not going to sign a 5-year extension running like that." (ESPN.com)

June 22, 2006:

UPS heading to Roush? Car owner Ray Evernham had until last Friday to convince Dodge officials to allow UPS to sponsor Kasey Kahne's Dodge next year, and apparently he couldn't do it. That means UPS will sponsor Greg Biffle's Ford next year. (Augusta Chronicle)

Richert Wins WYPALL® Crew Chief of the Race Award: Greg Biffle and his crew chief Doug Richert finally shook their spell of bad luck this weekend at Darlington Raceway. Biffle dominated the Dodge Charger 500, leading a race-high 170 laps before claiming his first Nextel Cup victory of the season. Biffle’s wining performance earned Richert the WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race award. Although Biffle was up front for the majority of the event, on the second-to-last run, his car’s handling began to fade and relegated him to fourth-place before the final round of pit stops. Richert called Biffle into the pits earlier than the rest of the field for fresh tires, which moved him into the lead once the stops cycled around. The No. 16 National Guard Ford remained on point until the checkered flag. “I actually wanted to bring Greg (Biffle) in a few laps earlier than I did, but I was worried the caution might come out,” said Richert. “The way our luck has been going I thought that would happen for sure. But it all worked out.” A panel of voters; including a member of the local media, Tony Eury Sr. and a WYPALL® Wipers representative; all cast their vote for Richert as the crew chief who did the best job. “Pit strategy is so important at Darlington,” said Eury Sr. “Your tires wear out so fast here, so you want to have your car come in as soon as possible for fresh rubber. You’ve got to be careful not to come in too soon, though, or the caution could come out and trap you, but you can’t stay out too long either. If you do that, your car’s handling will go away and you’ll slide back. Doug (Richert) pitted at just the right time tonight. The fresh tires allowed him to pass the leaders under green and hold them off until the end. It was a great call.” For winning the Crew Chief of the Race award, WYPALL® Wipers presented Richert $1,000. At the end of the season, the Nextel Cup crew chief with the most weekly wins will receive $20,000 and be crowned the WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Year. This was Richert’s first Crew Chief of the Race award in 2006, which ties him with Darian Grubb, Todd Berrier Chad Knaus and Roy McCauley for second-place in the Crew Chief of the Year standings. Robbie Reiser, Tony Eury Jr. and Kenny Francis are tied for first, each with one win. - (SMC 500 PR)

May 13, 2006:

Greg Biffle edges Jeff Gordon to win Dodge Charger 500: Greg Biffle finally snapped the streak of bad luck that has plagued his season, holding off a late charge from Jeff Gordon to win at Darlington Raceway on Saturday night. It was the first win of the season for Biffle, who had been unable to catch a single break all year. He led the most laps in three other races, only to see his shot at a win evaporate because of a wide-ranging batch of mishaps. He dominated in this one for his second straight Darlington victory, leading 170 of the 367 laps, but had to keep a close eye on Gordon in his rearview mirror. Gordon, a six-time Darlington winner who also was looking for his first victory of the season, used the final 25 laps to chip away at Biffle's lead. Gordon cut the margin down to just about a second over the final few laps and had a clear shot at running Biffle down with one to go. But he never could pull onto Biffle's rear bumper, and Biffle held on to beat him by two car lengths. (FOXSports.com - Results - Points)

Biffle's girlfriend to be reprimanded by NASCAR: Greg Biffle's girlfriend earned a chat with NASCAR because of her pit-road confrontation with Kurt Busch's fiancee after the two drivers wrecked at Texas Motor Speedway. Moments after the wreck, TV cameras caught Nicole Lunders, Biffle's longtime girlfriend, slamming a water bottle on Biffle's pit box. She then marched down pit road and climbed halfway up Busch's box and had a heated exchange with Eva Bryan. The brief confrontation created a buzz in NASCAR, and the sanctioning body wants to cool down the emotions. "There will be some conversations that will be had with the people that participated, and we'll make sure that this doesn't carry on and into the garage or anywhere else," Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition, said Wednesday. "You've got to remember, most everybody in the garage area is friends, and those two girls in particular have a close relationship. "Tempers flare, and we'll look at that and we'll make sure it doesn't carry on any further than that." (In part from News-Record)

Jackson-Hewitt announces #16 National Guard promotion: Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, proud sponsor of the No. 16 National Guard Ford Fusion and "The Tax Service of NASCAR," joins with members of the National Guard and champion NASCAR driver Greg Biffle at a trackside press conference to launch the Jackson Hewitt National Guard "Heroes of the Year" award, a one-of-a-kind contest for people to nominate a National Guard loved one, friend or neighbor. Through the campaign, one National Guard soldier will be selected for the chance of a lifetime - the opportunity to have his or her image featured on the car that NASCAR driver Greg Biffle will drive at a 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Race, and attend the race with their family to watch the momentous occasion in person. This is the first time that a non-celebrity's image will be featured on a NASCAR race car! In addition to spotlighting soldiers, the campaign also recognizes families and employers who have shown exceptional support for, and service to, the core mission and values of the Guard. The car that Greg Biffle will race in this weekend's Auto Club 500 race will feature a silhouette paint-scheme of the Jackson Hewitt National Guard "Heroes of the Year" award!  (CooperKatz & Co. PR)

Richert and Manion Win WYPALL® Crew Chief of the Year Award: After a season of fierce competition, the 2005 WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief Challenge has crowned its champions. Doug Richert, of the No.16 National Guard Ford, and Kevin “Bono” Manion, of the No. 8 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet, were each awarded WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Year honors. At the conclusion of each Nextel Cup event this season, a panel of judges including a member of the local media, a WYPALL® Wipers representative, as well as Tony Eury Sr. and Robbie Reiser, selected the Crew Chief of the Race. The decision was based on who did the most outstanding job. It wasn’t necessarily the winner of each race, but was certainly the leader who made the biggest difference for his team. Each Crew Chief of the Race was presented with a check for $1,000. Richert won the award five times throughout the 2005 season to clinch WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Year honors among the Nextel Cup garage. “Its an awesome feeling, but I’m not in this position without everyone on this race team,” Richert said, “The team has definitely come full circle, we have all the ingredients; we got the driver, we got the crew, we got the parts and pieces to work with, and the Roush/Yates engine program is second to none.” He managed to hold off Bob Osborne of the No. 99 Ford, who finished the year strong, amounting four Crew Chief of the Race wins. Richert took home a grand prize of $20,000, courtesy of WYPALL® Wipers, for his efforts. Beginning at Daytona in July, WYPALL® extended the Crew Chief Challenge to the Busch Series garage. At each companion event, Reiser and Eury Sr. selected the most impressive crew chief of the day’s race. Kevin Manion, Newt Moore, and Brad Parrott were each selected twice by the expert panel. A tie breaker was determined based on the point standings, which earned Manion the WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Year award for the NASCAR Busch Series. Manion was given a $5,000 grand prize. WYPALL® will return next year to continue the award, running both a full time Nextel Cup and Busch Series schedule. Richert Wins WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race Award: Doug Richert and the #16 National Guard/Post-it Ford were able to turn it around after a dismal week at Texas Motor Speedway to finish second at the Checker Auto Parts 500. Biffle led 189 laps, the most in the race, which is the 4th time this season he has done so. For his preparation getting the #16 Ford ready for Phoenix, Doug Richert was voted the WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race. Biffle fought hard in the Arizona sun, dominating most of the race. "Greg had to battle all day so we didn't gamble as far as tires go," said Richert. "We had a really good car; you don't get that too often, so we were hoping to capitalize. Overall, we were pleased with the 2nd place finish," continued Richert. The #16 Ford's turnaround from a lackluster performance could also be attributed to fast pit stops. "The guys have been great all year long; they know every second counts and they performed well today. We had problems in Texas, but we bounced back and put together some great pit stops for Greg." The panel of voters, including local NBC Sportscasters, a WYPALL® Wipers representative and Robbie Reiser, unanimously voted for Richert as the crew chief that did the best job. "These guys had a lot on their shoulders this week," said Reiser. "It says a lot of Doug Richert to come back after the weekend they had in Texas, bringing such a well prepared car and crew." With his win, Doug Richert clinches the WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Year, racking up six wins overall. He will receive a check for $20,000 this weekend in Homestead. Bob Osborne is alone at second. Alan Gustafson and Greg Zipadelli are tied for third-place with three wins. Jimmy Fennig, Robbie Reiser, Chad Knaus, Steve Addington and Robbie Loomis are tied for fourth-place with two wins. Tommy Baldwin, Scott Miller, Fatback McSwain, Steve Hmiel, Greg Erwin, Slugger Labbe, Pat Tryson and Pete Rondeau are tied for fifth-place, each with one win. (SMC 500)

Biffle is happy at Roush:  Greg Biffle, Jack Roush's big winner this season, is happy to have a new contract signed and his future set. "I like job security, and if we don't run well next year, I know I'm not going to be looking for a job," Biffle said. "They've compensated me at a fair amount, what I felt was fair. It's not the best I could have got, for sure, but they were reasonable and that's what I asked them to be." While driver contracts are top-secret and compensation is frequently complicated, Biffle is believed to have signed for $3.5 million a year. Teammate Kurt Busch is believed to have signed with Roger Penske for between $4 million and $6 million a year, depending on bonuses and souvenir sales. (Salem-Journal)

Biffle and Wallace secure in Chase: When the last piece of sheet metal had been crumpled Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Chase for the Nextel Cup field had two more entries: Greg Biffle and Rusty Wallace.  Biffle finished third behind winner Matt Kenseth and runner-up Jeff Burton, and gave a nod to his crew for their diligence. "This race team has a never-give-up attitude," he said. "To come from dead-last to third ... and I didn't get any freebies -- not in the pits -- I had to earn every single one of them." Point standings leader Tony Stewart and second-place Jimmie Johnson earned Chase berths last week at Michigan. Biffle, Wallace and Johnson must start the remaining two races before the Chase to solidify their spots in the Chase.  (NASCAR.com)

Biffle eyes possible LeMan's Series in Oregon next year: The American Le Mans Series comes to Portland International Raceway on July 29-31, and at one time promoter Mike Nealy of Global Events Group had visions of a Nextel Cup star joining the party and helping sell more tickets. "There was a discussion," Nealy said. "At one time, we thought there might be a possibility of (getting a Nextel Cup driver)." Imagine the added hype if the ALMS brought in a Jimmie Johnson, a Tony Stewart or local star Greg Biffle, who trails only Johnson in this year's Nextel Cup standings. Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett have made guest appearances at PIR during Champ Car events, and Biffle, who grew up in Vancouver, has raced trucks at PIR. But Biffle has not raced in his own backyard since he made it big in the Nextel Cup series. If he had come to Portland for the ALMS, it might have added another 5,000 fans to the gate, but it isn't that easy to jump from the No. 16 Roush Racing Ford Taurus and drive an LMP1 car or a GT-1 car. For one thing, Ford does not race in the ALMS. "Different drivers have different arrangements with car owners and sponsors," NASCAR's Hunter said. "But the contract between driver and owner is probably the biggest factor. . . . The (owners) don't want their drivers getting hurt." Biffle, who ran practice laps Friday for Sunday's Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway, said his contract with Roush Racing calls for him to drive Fords exclusively. "And even if there was a Ford car in the field, I'd have to get permission to go drive the vehicle," Biffle said. "It's up to them."  "That was a (Daytona) prototype, and it was a lot of fun," Biffle said. Biffle said he was not contacted about the Portland ALMS race. "If it had been possible, I would have considered it," he said. "It would have been fun to go and do it -- it's exciting to know the kind of fan support and interest in NASCAR there is in that area -- but I've already made plans to go out of the country (next week). I've never been to the Bahamas. I'm going to go down there and check it out." (In part from Oregon Live)

Biffle Comments about Johnson rough day: After finishing 14th at Sonoma, new point leader Greg Biffle said, "I saw the 48 was laughing at us when we went off the track (in) qualifying. And what comes around goes around, I guess. It's a good day for us." Greg Biffle may have been playing a little bit of a mind game with his comments after Sunday's race. People in the garage area love to try to start stuff from time to time. Jimmie Johnson had already made his qualifying run, and Biffle probably was told about Johnson's reaction when the 16 went off course. Somebody is taking it and trying to turn it into more than it really was.  But at the same time, it gives Biffle an opportunity to tell Johnson, "Look, big boy, you may be king of the hill for today, but I'm coming after you." On Sunday, the 16 team made a great recovery and had a little bit of a miscue on the timing on their pit stop. Otherwise, they probably could have finished better than 14th. They made a very solid run and took advantage of Johnson's problems, which occur quite often on road courses. Now, Biffle finds himself leading the point standings, and you're going to rattle him so it could present a challenge for Johnson and that Hendrick group. (Fox Sports)

Richert Wins Fourth WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race Award: Not even Miles the Monster could stop the tag team of Greg Biffle and Doug Richert this weekend at Dover International Speedway. Biffle blistered the intimidating high-banked, concrete oval in his Richert prepared Ford. The #16 Taurus took over the top spot on lap 241 and never looked back. Biffle led 150 of 400 laps before taking the checkered flag. His winning performance earned Richert his fourth WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race award in 2005. Most competitors didn’t consider Biffle a threat during the first half of the race, but Richert made several changes over the course of the event to dial in the #16 National Guard Ford. “We made a bunch of changes to loosen up the car,” said Richert. “We did a bunch of wedge, probably six or seven rounds; air pressure; track bar; rubbers in; rubbers out. It was a lot. We changed enough to where it would be good at the end and that’s all that mattered.”  On lap 375, Richert had his driver relinquish the lead to make his final green flag pit stop. Despite only 25 laps remaining in the race, and several cars opting for two-tires or fuel only, Richert took the extra time to change all four Goodyears before sending Biffle back on the track. “When you have a lead like that, four or five seconds, you don’t want to short change your performance by jeopardizing it with two tires,” explained Richert. “I thought about taking two. When you change four tires there’s always a chance a changer could make a mistake. If another car takes two tires he could get out in front in clean air and pull away, but we took four and the way it turned out, it was the right call. Greg (Biffle) was able to keep the lead and not have anyone threaten it.” Biffle seconded his crew chief’s four-tire call, thinking the extra rubber would be exactly what he needed should another caution have come out in the closing laps. “A caution was likely to come out with twenty-five laps to go and I wanted some bullets in my gun,” stated Biffle.  The panel of voters; including Doug Lesmerises of the Wilmington News-Journal, a WYPALL® Wipers representative and Robbie Reiser; all gave their vote to Doug Richert. “I was listening to them (#16 team) on the radio and they wanted to take four tires,” said Lesmerises. “They thought about changing their strategy, but they said that they were going to stick with four and they did that. They blew everyone away. They knew what they wanted to do and weren’t going to change that for anyone.”  “Doug had to make a lot of changes to the car,” said Robbie Reiser. “After each adjustment, the car got a little faster. By the end of the race, it was in a league of its own. He was far enough ahead at the end that everyone had to try making two-tire stops to catch up with him. Richert had the winning game plan and executed it perfectly.”  With his fourth WYPALL® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race award, Richert stays in first place of the Crew Chief of the Year standings. Robbie Loomis is in second place with two wins. Tommy Baldwin, Scott Miller, Bob Osborne, Alan Gustafson and Pete Rondeau are in a tie for third place. At the end of the season, the crew chief with the most weekly wins will receive $20,000. For more information, log onto www.wypall.com. (WYPALL PR)

Biffle Wins at the Monsters Mile: Greg Biffle's surprising run to the top of Nextel Cup competition got a boost Sunday from a stunningly easy victory in a crash-filled race on The Monster Mile. Biffle got his series-leading fourth win of the season to close within 46 points of pacesetter Jimmie Johnson. The victory in the $5.5 million MBNA 400 was Biffle's first at Dover International Speedway and the seventh of his career. In a race slowed seven times for 33 of its 400 laps, Biffle won in part because he avoided traffic problems that resulted in hard crashes. Among those taken from the field were four-time Dover winners Jeff Gordon and Ricky Rudd, and Ken Schrader and Dave Blaney. (ABC News - Results - Points)

Biffle Looking to Stay With Roush: Greg Biffle says he has been too busy to solidify his plans for next season, but he was expected to meet with his agent last week and still intends to stay in the No. 16 car at Roush Racing. "We're not any closer because we haven't had a chance to talk," Biffle says. "They're going to take care of me because that is where I want to be. It would be crazy for me to want to go somewhere else because I might lose the next whole season getting geared up with a new team." Biffle is the only driver in the top 10 whose contract expires at the end of 2005 without an option, which is another reason--besides a stellar 2005 performance, including his victory Saturday night at Darlington--he is in high demand. (SportingNews)

Biffle Wins at the Track to Tough to Tame: Greg Biffle's chances of winning a race he dominated appeared gone after his Roush Racing team made some late-race changes. But a timely spin by Mark Martin and four fresh tires were all Biffle needed to win Saturday night's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Darlington Raceway in overtime. "The second to last run there we tried some tire pressure things and got my car way too loose," Biffle said. "I thought, `Why in the world would we wait until the last run to try something?' It went the wrong way, but we recovered from that."  Biffle, who led 176 of 370 laps on the treacherous 1.366-mile, egg-shaped Darlington oval, fell behind on a late pit stop, but got another chance when Martin spun, bringing out the 12th caution flag just five laps from the scheduled finish. Marketing NASCAR in the NW, with Biffle: Greg Biffle is suddenly one of NASCAR's hottest marketing tools - and Biffle is important to NASCAR in a particularly crucial respect: He's from the Northwest, one of NASCAR's key markets. Daytona has been using him to schmooze those local politicians who can make or break a deal as important as NASCAR's proposed new Richmond-type speedway in the Seattle-Portland-Vancouver area.  "I've met with a few people, including some people from the Marysville (Washington) area that owned the airport, some people from the commissioner's deal, to get that going up there," Biffle said. Biffle Not Looking to Leave: Also, Greg Biffle, reported to be a top candidate for Penske Racing's No. 2 car when Rusty Wallace retires end of this year, insisted he will remain with Roush Racing. Biffle, two-time winner this season and fully competitive at most other stops, said, in the presence of owner Jack Roush, said that his contract-renewal negotiations with Roush are more a matter of timing. "There isn't a question about it, and there hasn't been this year," Biffle said.  Biffle's contract runs out after this year, which makes him a subject for rumor. He expressed discontent with the Roush group last year, but he and the No. 16 team began running well mid-summer, and all became well again. (Speed Channel)

Biffle Dominates Texas: Greg Biffle made the best of a difficult situation Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, charging from the rear of the field for a convincing victory. The Roush Racing driver was overpowering in the Samsung/Radio Shack 500, leading 219 of 334 laps on the 1 1/2-mile oval to grab his second Nextel Cup victory of the season and the fifth of his career. "The car was really loose out there with that short (rear) spoiler that NASCAR has us using, but I like having a loose race," Biffle said. "It works in my favor."
